Common Questions and Answers about How to overcome fear of driving a car

fear

Avatar n tn ll have such a fear of getting into the thing while envisioning it as some kind of giant fish trying to swallow me whole. Don't get me wrong, I still drive. Did it this morning to get to the office. I'm really beginning to hate it a lot. Don't know how or what to change. I've thought about saying to everyone, "I'm not driving anymore. You want to go somewhere then you drive". Most likely won't work. No one will take me seriously.
Avatar m tn My doctor gave me a prescription of 1mg ativan (he said to take half) and I'm currently having a anxiety but I'm scared to take it.
1785438 tn?1314987935 It helps some, but I am still housebound at this point. Some days are better than others, but I still have such a fear of trying to go anywhere or even just drive around that it keeps me inside. Even taking out the garbage has been such a hassle for me. A major problem with me is the driving, though. I can imagine that while I get to certain points that I don't like on my travels, that I will go through a major panic attack.
Avatar n tn Since you work and need to drive I would recommend therapy to help you learn coping skills so you can get back to driving with no anxiety.
Avatar n tn The best advice I can give you is to talk to someone and try to face the fear. Get back in your car and go for a drive even if it is only around the block. Each time you do it it will get easier. You have to take your control back. I should really learn to take my own advice. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you feel better.....
1532322 tn?1292178743 I would like to know how you cope with anxiety of driving in snow & icey conditions! I am extremly fearful of the snow &ice .
Avatar f tn I have since discontinued the use of the antibiotic ( as of October) and continue to reduce the number of times I put in steriod drops. I am now a once every three days. My cornea continues to show signs of improvement. In November a topography exam showed my astigmatism at 7.53 and in late January at just .53. I continue to have blurred vision and do not see well with bright lights, glare or during night driving with heavy car lights arounds me. My Dr.
Avatar m tn A man tried to run into my car and when I came to a stop light, he tried to tear the door of my car, while threatening to kill me. I was 3 months pregnant, and my 11 month old daughter was in the back seat. I had to pull her over the front seat and drive to the nearest police station. The guy was high on drugs. Anyway, since then, I have suffered from severe panic attacks.
Avatar m tn I have a huge fear of driving and being a passenger in the car! It started out of the blue about a year and a hald ago! Nothing happened to bring it on it just happened! Its awful as I drive 60 miles every day for work! I have panic attacks along with it some days and have to pull over! My psychiatrist put me on Ativan that I take before driving to and from work or when I am getting into someone elses car and it seems to help al ittle bit. I am also on Effexor....
Avatar f tn You could also bring along a puzzle book, like a word search, etc. I have a lot of anxiety in the car when my panic is peaking, and puzzle books are a really nice distraction for me, they help a lot. That's because I'm focused on something else, while at the same time, not looking AT the carm or the traffic and other things that would make me anxious.
Avatar f tn Recently I have been so terrified to get in a car or even the school bus. I did get into a car accident 3 years ago (my mom was driving) where we hit a deer and the airbags went off but no one was hurt and I wasn't fazed at the time. Whenever i'm in a car now i feel my stomach clenching and it's hard to breathe. I feel like i'm gonna throw up and it doesn't stop until i'm out of the car. This didn't start happening until recently but it's quite severe.
Avatar f tn m sorry you feel this way and have such great fear of snow. While it is reasonable to have fear of driving in snow---- perhaps you are talking about the level of your reaction? I know that I too do not like driving in snow. I live in an area where there is often ice beneath it and have had a few bad driving experiences. So . .. I get my groceries (like EVERYONE else, wow, our grocery is packed if there is bad weather in the forecast . . .
Avatar m tn so i stop driving but sometimes when im in side a car like a passenger i feel like i goin to jump from the car so i would like to know why i got these and if is an cure
Avatar f tn like when speaking to any elderlly person (i show a lot of respect and talk calmly) i feel or have a illusion of slapping the person or demeaing him...i am surviving with it...infact many ...
3997096 tn?1349317861 Kinda caused me to have a fear of driving. Pretty weird. I still have a slight fear of driving. I live fairly close to Chicago and have never had a fear of driving through there as many people do who don't live there, but haven't been able to do it since eot. Hopefully one day I will get over this fear.
1804812 tn?1329677557 Boy, can I relate!! MANY of us can! This goes hand in hand with panic. " I am known as the "back roads" queen because I can get to just about anywhere on small streets and county roads. I always feel like I need to have a place I can pull over". Me too! LOL. I HATE highways. I explored this fear with my therapist years ago, and she explained to me that the fear stems from our basic fear of becoming "trapped" somewhere, with no option of "escape".
Avatar f tn However, since I had my second child (a BEAUTIFUL boy) those trips - both long and short- have had to stop. I have very suddenly developed a fear of riding in cars that I have never experienced before. I look at those two beautiful children in the backseat and am paralyzed with fear at something happening to them in an accident. The odd thing is that my husband is a wonderful driver who has never been in a single accident or even gotten a ticket.
Avatar m tn You say that your sense of anxiety/panic is happening "mostly at these two stop lights I CAN NOT avoid." Why THOSE specific lights? Did something happen there that caused you to first feel anxious, and as you've said "trapped?" Were you in a car accident there in which you could not get out of your car for some reason? Car accidents can be extremely traumatic. You've had this problem before and said you got over it without medication.
Avatar n tn Therapy helps get to the root of things and then a therapist would work with you to build you up to be able to deal with things such as driving as a pasenger. They can give you techniques that will help you get through it. Anxiety is all mental...so techniqly you can talk yourself out of it. A lot of times anxiety is sub-contious too though, in that case you really have no control. Therapy would help with that. Something I recently bought were rose-tinted sun glasses.
Avatar f tn Things that are worth being happy for, things that make you smile or things you have been blessed with. Then task yourself at the end of the day, no matter how bad that day was, to name out loud a positive of the day. Example: my car got rear ended today and I lost 20 dollars in cash. Positive: the lady who hit me has insurance and she was so nice. I'm thankful my baby is okay, what an amazing thing that our bodies are so protective for our unborn child!
Avatar f tn m going to go into labor while driving! Is there a certain time to stop driving? Has it happened to anyone?
8377023 tn?1399509160 My biggest fear out of everything is my water breaking while driving their car. I am absolutely terrified that this is going to happen. I have already gotten contractions while driving with one of the twins, thankfully the contractions weren't crazy bad, and this happened today. I dont know what to do besides calling their aunt, Chris, my mom and my doctor. Like what should I tell their aunt if that happens? To just meet me at the hospital or what?
Avatar f tn Sorry. A couple more things. The idea is to teach her how to work through anxieties well. That is my point. The other thing is that sometimes, spoken language comes short when we get overwhelmed. She can write it out to work or describe what she is going through, draw, sculpt with clay dough, play it out with dolls, symbols or whatever, and sometimes, it helps if she talks through while doing so.
1353681 tn?1387083733 They can teach us new ways to look at things and how to cope. But I think if I was ridng in a car with someone down a hill and they sped up, I'd be freakin out for sure! LOL It sounds like you've done very well at conquering your issues...good for you! Maybe you could try to talk a lot and enjoy the scenery, anything to take your mind off of being the passenger? Good luck with this and take care.
Avatar f tn Talk this over with your parents so they can get you therapy to learn how to break free of this fear. Good luck and take care!
Avatar n tn I have had a toothache/facepain for over two weeks, I know I need to go and see a dentist but I have a great fear of going because of cetain circumstances that happened while going to the dentist as a child. I have been taking advil for the pain and most times it is tolerable but now it seems to be getting worse as it is keeping me awake at night.
Avatar f tn Hi Pepper, driving is dangerous and your fear is normal. Being in a car is not an extension of our own bodies and also, as you mention, there are the other cars around you that you cant control. Ive been driving for 40 years without an accident. This is due to being active and proactive. When i am driving, i also watch out for the other cars and project there movements. I used to drive a taxi so my experience is a bit better than the average person.
