Common Questions and Answers about How smoking affects fetus

smoking

Avatar m tn My mom smoked with me and I was 4 weeks early, have asthma, chronic ear infections, and weighed less than 5lbs. I actually did a research paper on the affects of smoking and pregnancy and while some babies may experience minimal affects or some moms might "think" their babies are completely healthy; what they don't realize is that the asthma or allergies their child has is related to smoking while pregnant.

Avatar f tn So i'm 12 weeks and after smoking roughly 10-15 cigarettes a day before I got pregnant, i'm down to one or two a day. I was told that quitting cold turky would be worse for my baby (especially dealing with depression and anxiety) so even though I've cut down and plan on quitting some time this week, could there be any significant damage done to my baby? I'm really worried and wish I just would have quit when I first found out..

Avatar f tn In addition smoking also clearly affects your pulmonary status and has potential affects when undergoing general anesthesia. It probably takes a year or more after discontinuing smoking to put any individual in the same status as a non-smoker.
2037415 tn?1332166326 Smoking affects your placenta which deprives the fetus of oxygen and this is what causes low birth weight. It can cause cleft palate and if you are still smoking when you are delivering the baby will have to go through detox the day it is born. the last one is the one that got me. I am not telling you these things to moan at you they just helped me to get my head around giving up. Try get down to one a day, then one every second day, then one a week.
Avatar n tn you have to be proud of yourself for not smoking! and all will change for you! just don't beat yourself up for it and don't feel guilty. you really have to want to be smoke free, and feel freedom without them, you have to stop feeling scared when you know that you can't smoke, and really you have to feel proud, and it will be easier for you not to smoke ever again. You know that smoking is bad for you, and is bad for your LO....so just get rid of it!

Avatar f tn So my bf/ baby's father said that when I had our son he would stop smoking but he hasn't. He stopped for a few days then started back up...Idk how to feel. If he cant stop for our son he never will.
Avatar n tn Because it drugs them and makes them pass out, right? Exactly well, how would you think that would affect a developing fetus when all drugs that the mother takes are passed through the placenta? People need to understand that the mother and fetus share the blood supply and whatever the mother consumes, whether its something good or bad, the baby consumes also.
Avatar f tn I am 12 weeks and cut it down to 5-6 cigs a day the last month. My situation is very stressful abd has been very hard to quit.Im so nervous it affects the baby's development. Is it possible?
Avatar f tn There are mixed reviews on the benefits of cold turkey vs cutting back... there are gonna be mixed answers in each, depending how much you smoke a day, how you handle not smoking and will power are very big factors in quitting... like i said before its up to you as you know how to take it best...
Avatar f tn Oh Jesus, if she's only smoking weed, there haven't been any adverse affects shown on a fetus. It's no worse than smoking cigarettes with the nicotine and drs allow that all the time during pregnancy. If there was a harder drug involved, yes notify whoever you need to. But a woman doesnt deserve to that kind of harassment and threat to take her child away. In fact, the stress can cause raised cortisol levels which have for sure been shown to harm a fetus.
Avatar f tn Hey, I am pregnant with my second child and I have quit smoking but I am having a hard time with these cravings. I immediately quit the first time I was pregnant but with this pregnancy it is so much harder. Any moms have any suggestions on how to keep the cravings away....HELP!!!!

Avatar f tn I have a friend who recently found out she is pregnant. She is a heavy smoker. And is finding it impossible to quit. I was a smoker before i got pregnant, but didn't have a hard time quitting so i really don't know how to help her. Can anyone share some tips on how you quit smoking? And maybe some stories of babies who had a smoking mother, she seems to think it won't hurt the baby because so many people claim to have smoked the entire time and had healthy babies.
Avatar f tn What are some serious short term and long term effects from smoking weed while pregnant? I'm barely 3 months, and I still smoke pot but not most of the day everyday like I did before.
Avatar f tn I have had multiple friends who have smoked in their pregnancies and their babies are wonderful, smart, and healthy. Asked my doc for one of them who was scared to confess he said he had never seen a study ever in his carrier that has said it harms the fetus. That being said I wouldn't chance it because I'm a scardy cat. Also some states in the US drug test pregnant Mommy's and take action for their findings once the baby is born. By testing the babies meconium i think.
