Avatar m tn Getting lidocaine for wisdom tooth extraction--felt the needle going in and woke up 45 minutes later in ER. I had had a seizure! Hundreds of shots for teeth over the years, never any such experience. Surgeon swore he found no blood in syringe and couldn't understand why I seized. Swore he did everything right, never heard of lidocaine causing a seizure this way. Apologized profusely. I'm now worried about completing the extraction, which has to be done.
Avatar f tn It probably isn't the lidocaine, it's the epinephrine that is in the lidocaine. You can ask your dentist to use an anesthetic without epinephrine, I have had tons of dental work and always ask for that. Dentist doesn't mind at all and I've never had any problems. It doesn't last as long but if you start to feel anything while they are working the dentist will just give you more. I have done fine with it.
Avatar f tn I had to get stitches last night, and was given 5-6 shots of epinephrine and lidocane. I told the intake nurse I was taking synthroid (which I presume implies thyroid problems). I felt a little "unusual" afterward (pounding heart, feeling calm and detached..), and was googling the side effects of the shot.. an article said this: "Additionally, epinephrine and lidocaine usually aren’t used in patients with thyroid disease, or disease of the kidneys or liver.
383138 tn?1314167773 s communicate, as indicated by Brook. How much pain you are in is also a good point. Are there other options that your cardiologist would be more comfortable with? This is your body, your money (so to speak, even if insurance is paying), your're the one who lives with the results. I would not be bullied or hurried into anything I did not feel okay about. Good luck to you -- keep us posted.

Avatar n tn 9 days ago my new dentist gave me a large dose of lidocaine/epinephrine on back molar (#17). Deep filling was needed. Most of my tongue has been numb since this procedure and I have had heart palpitations, chest pounding off and on since this happened. Also start shivering off and on. For past 3 days I have had chest pain when lying down...chest feels like it is being squeezed. Feel it now in any position but lying down increases the feeling. For past 2 days intense headache.
Avatar n tn In this day and age no patient needs to be traumatized in any way. I understand your anxieties but there is certainly a way you can be treated. I suggust that you see an oral surgeon for your necessary extractions. They are able to treat you with your cardiac problems. Secondly, there are dentists who do dental treatment using light sedation if you can not be treated any other way.
Avatar n tn I researched on the web and found many warnings about pregnant women receiving Lidocaine from the dentist but not what they gave me. The Epinephrine was used to clot my blood and the Xylocaine to numb the area. I know the medical community doesn't know everything and they reassured me this medication would not reach my baby but I think they may have been wrong on this one.
Avatar n tn This is the second time in two years this happens. The first time it was lidocaine with epinephrine; this time it was carbocaine without epinephrine. I think the reaction resulted in slight chest tightness even. As I told the doctor, he stopped the surgery (he had not started it yet) and sent me to my primary doctor to get cardiac clearance. I am 29 and have never had any heart problems.
Avatar n tn Lidocaine used as an anesthetic often has a small amount of epinephrine in the solution. The amount is so small that I have never heard of it causing tachycardia, although this is theoretically possible. Lidocaine and epinephrine is used in the suturing of millions of wounds every year with no cardiac events. My guess is that that is a coincidence here. The temporary fast heart rate in the absence of chest pain, pressure or other symptoms should have no long-lasting effects whatsoever.
Avatar f tn First--I read cipro is not recommened for people with heart rythm issues. Second--I hate the dentist--although I love the guy I see. Hes great because he is soooo patient with me. He always laughs every time he sees me and says "every time I see you I feel so bad for you because you look so scared" Cindy---I too have more root canals and caps than one should--and I always took great care of my teeth.
Avatar n tn I have had similar reactions to lidocaine and other medications for over 15 years. I used to work for a natural doctor who treated this. When she passed away I found a very skilled immunologist who ran a lot of unusual blood tests and found that what regular MD's were telling me were "mental problems" and "anxiety" were in fact very real physical problems with my immune system. Certain blood values were off-the-scale high.
Avatar n tn Normally we aspirate the needle/syringe prior to injection. That's how we prevent intravascular injections of lidocaine. Otherwise it would directly travel up to the brain and can cause seizures or other symptoms such as restlessness, disorientation, etc. There are several possibilities in regards to the seizure. It may be due to an intravascular injection although from my understanding, the seizure would occur more rapidly since its goes directly to the brain quickly.
Avatar f tn it just might be from the epinephrine in it. He could be sensitive to it. I am and they say that it is a normal reaction but I still don't like it. Tell them you want your son to have carbocaine or anything else without the epi. If you decide to go to another dentist tell them what happened to him and say you don't want him to have it.
Avatar f tn t until about a month later after i had grieved that i researched it and i found out that lidocaine can cause organ failure in the foetus in early pregnancy!! i took this to the GDC and i received a letter saying that the dentist carried out correct procedure!
1817071 tn?1366228243 I had a tooth pulled, they used epinephrine. I was in afib with low rate for 8 days. Then afib every 2-3 day. I was given Rythmol as PIP. I gradually have had less afib, but, each one has 100 for rate...I called dr. and asked him what to do....he said I needed ablation and bp monitors were not accurate. I got a new dr. and new dr. did not say anything about the lowered rate. I go to new EP next week. I will ask him.
Avatar n tn then i went to the kitchen and check my blood pressure standing up it was 139 over 93 was a heart rate of 129 just standing does anybody know wht this is happening..is it the extraction and how much blood i swollowed or is it the antibotics ...what my friends please help!..
Avatar n tn For the first time in 37 years, two weeks ago when I received regular dental anesthetic my heart raced and I started having palpitations. It passed of course in a few minutes and when I went in yesterday for a root canal I asked for the anesthetic without epi. The first shot was fine, but the second injection sill caused my heart to pound hard, my chest felt shallow and made me feel a little panicy. It passed and the 3rd injection did the same.
419964 tn?1333301906 Dental work is safe, and my ob said with the lead apron X-rays were ok. My dentist was cautious though and skipped the X-rays. One important thing none of these other smart ladies mentioned, if you have a procedure done make sure they use a lidocaine or pain reliever that doesn't have epinephrine in it. Bad for baby and your heart. Also I agree with the others, double check with your obgyn about the heart risk. Never hurts to call and they are used to it. Good luck!
Avatar f tn 100,000, Dose 20cc. Yes, this is the first time I have experienced this occurrence. I have a surgical biopsy soon because of more calcification in the same breast 1 year later; what do you suggest I tell the anaestesiologist?
Avatar m tn Hi, It is a serotonin and nor epinephrine reuptake inhibitor. The name of the neurotransmitter is nor epinephrine it is different from epinephrine. Most of the side effects occur during the period when one is taking the medication. But the important thing to remember is to follow the doctors instructions carefully. To reduce the incidence of side effects it is always started with a low dose and then it is gradually increased.
Avatar f tn It is much, much weaker than epineprhine and you would get a much, much lower dose of it than dental injection with epinephrine. Even so, I would just play it safe for regular exams and just get tropicamide which should not affect blood pressure or pulse.
Avatar n tn I googled it and read and read about the procedure and how other women handled it.A combo of lidocaine/epinephrine is used and four small shots are delivered in a squarish area round the cervix to completely numb it.I was asked to not drink coffee that morn due to this.I didn't feel a thing when the incisions/shots/numbing was made! Not a thing and my doc said u r handling this like a champ!I kept my breathing deep and relaxed. It was over with in 20 minutes.
Avatar f tn We stopped my Cymbalta about a month ago and it made a HUGE difference in how I feel mentally and emotionally. Apparently that wasn't the drug for me, and it makes no difference in my pain, which was the point of going on it to begin with. I had a terrible fibromyalgia flare-up before Thanksgiving. The worst in a long time. To the point I had to crawl up the stairs and go down on my bum. The flare-up finally broke and I was dealing with the regular pain.
