Common Questions and Answers about How high can ammonia levels go

ammonia

Avatar f tn I’ve read other posts where people talk about ammonia levels in the hundreds and I’m really confused. How high can they get? How high before you go into a coma? He is only 65.
Avatar f tn she has continued to take the Lactolose for the past two weeks but today her ammonia level is 150. I would like to find out how high ammonia level can go before it is considered toxic and will cause her to go into a coma? I am also wondering in end stage cirrhosis will the lactolose eventually be uneffective in bringing down the ammonia levels? My final question is what kind of life expectancy is there when the cirrohsis remains at that level?
1184842 tn?1264265187 the brain damage caused by high ammonia levels not to mention accelerated liver damage are not what you want either right? I think the better part of valor is to tolerate the taste so that you can keep your wits about you...unless dymentia, brain fog and liver failure sound good to you.
Avatar n tn Yes it does. High levels of ammonia cause hepatic encephalopathy which in turn can cause confusion, sleepiness and forgetfulness. There are medications to help lower those levels. Speak to your hep doc.

Avatar n tn All I know is high ammonia levels are due to a condition called encephalopathy. Its caused by cirrhosis. If your father is in the hospital he must have doctors who can tell you more about his condition. My guess is he may need a liver transplant. Ask his doctor.
Avatar n tn Patients with liver disease are unable to process or detoxify ammonia so that ammonia levels can reach dangerously high levels. This is coupled by increased ammonia production of colonic bacteria, especially if one is constipated or has an irregular bowel movement. High protein intake can also lead to an incresed ammonia production. I suggest you talk about these possibilities with your doctors.
Avatar n tn At the age of 36 she had to have a complete gastrectomy(entire stomach removed) due to massive polyps. One year ago she started developing high ammonia levels, range from upper 60's to 110. Massive headaches seem to accompany the elevated levels. She has had liver function tests and biopsies for years now and have determined the problem isn't her liver. They prescribed lactulose and Xifaximim(antibiotic given to liver disease patients, might have the spelling wrong).
Avatar f tn They finally diagnosed him yesterday with high ammonia levels. All other tests are clear liver etc are fine. He had been suffering with urine problems and constipation for a few months before this started. My question is how long before he comes back to normal as he still is hallucinating, has no memory, acts very childlike and generally disturbed ( hes usually perfectly healthy other than epilepsy which is controlled with medication.
Avatar m tn Prior to my transplant in 2001 my ammonia levels were very high and I had very bad encephalopathy. I wasn't allowed to be left aloe because of the danger I could hurt myself, try to cook and burn the house down, etc. And of course no driving. My grown children had to come and babysit for me when my husband couldn't be at home to watch me. It was much like having dementia. My reason for postig is that I hope your mother is not left aloe with such high ammonia levels.
Avatar f tn What else can I expect form elevated ammonia levels that have be high for this long? I know that different labs have different values, but ball park, what are normal and what are severe levels? Will he have possible brain damage?
Avatar f tn Anyone have elevated ammonia levels? Are you having any symptoms and at what level did your symptoms start? I just had my first ammonia screening done and the level came back 119, with less than 47 being the reference range. I'm not having any symptoms. This seems to be the story of my life. All of my labs are going whacky and I'm still feeling fine. I'm afraid one of these days it's all going to hit and I'll be a mess.
Avatar f tn If she had internal bleeding, could she have been saved, everything was going bad, ammonia levels really high, blood pressure up and down, liver bad, diabetis and had just gotten out of coma?

Avatar f tn Hello Dragon~ I've never heard of the flavor taste etc. when your ammonia levels are high, you'll get headaches, confusion, anger from chem. imbalance and insomoa etc. as the side-effects of toxic overloads, I guess it might stand to reason that since other senses are effected, even eye-sight, that "taste" could be also...
Avatar n tn Yes ammonia levels can change. But not like in diabetics and sugar. It is not really called dementia it is called hepatic encephalopathy. Is he taking Lactulose? This can help reduce episodes of HE by reducing ammonia levels. Is he eligible for a liver transplant and willing to undergo the procedure?
Avatar f tn I lost 100lbs, was in a wheel chair, could not write, my ammonia levels were also high and had to have many Paracentesis to treat the ascites (abdominal fluids). We had discussed the TIPS procedure but I was not ready for that. KEEP POSITIVE THINKING and my mother always said to pray for help from my angels, they were only waiting for me to ask.... it didn't hurt! Good luck, there is still the possibility of a great recovery. I was one of the lucky and grateful ones.
Avatar n tn He went back in the hospital yesterday for the 10th time this year, because his ammonia levels got so high that he couldn't talk, walk, swallow. We don't know what else to do to manage his condition. Any advice or similar experience would be appreciated.
1008841 tn?1293598960 that is to say, some patients who have hepatic encephalopathy (HE, or confusion due to liver dysfunction) do not have elevated ammonia levels, and sometimes ammonia levels can be elevated without apparent HE -- docs usually use the guidelines Hector provided above to diagnose HE as opposed to just declaring it based on ammonia levels.
