How famvir works

Common Questions and Answers about How famvir works

famvir

Avatar f tn Has anyone had better results with Famvir? And does it help suppress transmission like Valtrex does? My Dr thinks the Valtrex might be causing my hair loss so I am switching....
Avatar f tn famvir works by disrupting the viral replication process. canker sores aren't caused by a virus to famvir wouldn't help them. hard to tell if this was your hsv1 flaring up or just coincidence that it went away so quickly after starting famvir. No harm in treating though that's for sure. has hubby ever been tested to know his own hsv1 status?
Avatar f tn I got huge bold patch too, this is terrible.
Avatar f tn It hasn’t stopped (though most of the time it seems to have slowed). How long does it take for my hair to stop falling out from this?
Avatar m tn please read our read before posting post on this forum so you better understand how this works. Your sarcasm was unnecessary when you didn't even bother to bump back up your post as suggested after 24 hours of no replies in the read before posting post.
Avatar f tn you might want to switch from famvir to valtrex - probably the 1gm daily dose or even the 500mg 2x/day dose and see if that works better for you. are you on steroids for your cf?
Avatar m tn how long did you take the famvir for? are you sure that you haven't done anything else along with taking famivir that could have helped the symptoms? simply from being at rest for example. there are some new strains of Influenza virus that can trigger immunological problems and weaken the muscles and spinal cord. do you have any other symptoms?
Avatar m tn Sorry my phone auto corrected. I meant 'I shouldn't trust any test I've taken thus far to include this WB?' How long do I wait? Man I feel stupid.
Avatar n tn Lysine is not the same thing as valtrex - not even sorta. Research shows that it doesn't really do much for herpes either. Most folks already get more than enough lysine naturally in their diets anyways. How long have you been taking the valtrex? What dose are you taking? Headaches are a normal side effect of the herpes antivirals but they typically will go away in a week or two. What mad eyou start suppressive therapy?
Avatar n tn Research has found that when taken suppressively - valtrex delays the return of viral shedding a little longer than famvir and it also works better in infected folks who aren't having obvious recurrences of herpes. It also only has to be taken once a day which is a bonus for suppressive therapy long term. Both acyclovir and famvir need to be taken twice daily for suppressive therapy ( acyclovir is 3x/day for ob's and famvir is still 2x/day for ob's ).
Avatar m tn Valtrex or Famvir. You can't get them without a prescription from your doctor. Famvir is the cheaper of the two.
Avatar f tn I've had corneal ulcers for many years, always left eye, now in the right too. Mine are caused by herpes. I'm allergic to viroptic drops, valtrex works but has aggravated a string of GI problems. Does anyone know of any other treatments or meds to try? I woke up this morning and know I have the start of another ulcer.
Avatar m tn In the following years (2007-2009) i have only had 3-4 outbreaks. when i get an outbreak i use famvir, 2 tablets at first then 1 every 12 hours for 3 doses. these always worked quickly and the outbreaks were never severe and didn't last longer than a week or so start to finish. In the last 2 weeks (jan 2010) i had a small outbreak that i immediately took my usual dose of famvir for and it cleared up, almost totally within 5-7 days.
Avatar n tn My doctor said its very unusual to have outbreaks all the time on medication. She has prescribed Famvir for me now. Can you tell me if this is normal?
Avatar m tn I used to only get an outbreak every 8-12 months, however since I started working full-time I have had 3 outbreaks in less than 2 months. I take famvir 2x250mg at first then 1 tablet every 12 hours for 3 doses and the outbreaks clear up within a week, but it is really starting to get me down and depressed. My questions are: 1) Can recurrent herpes outbreaks lead to penile cancer? I am worried if the same area is affected by HSV a lot then could it cause cancer there?
Avatar n tn (I had the pain in my side several days before the lesions appeared) I went to the doctor immediately after seeing lesions (only 2 or three popped up) He gave me famvir which haulted them in their tracks, and they went away a week or so later never to return Thank GOD!
Avatar f tn I do. I have for years but have never had this problem. Possibly I'm just more sensitive with the HSV? They called in Famvir for me to start but I think I might take a medication vacation for a few days. If I start showing sx of an outbreak, I'll go get the Famvir. I've read that Famvir isn't as effective at suppressing viral shedding as Valtrex. I'm not in a relationship right now, so that's not a pressing issue, I just like being informed.
Avatar f tn I hope someone can help. I've had horrible recurring pain in my right eye for over a year. Went to Optho. multiple times and was told it was an infected oil gland. I was put on low dose antibiotics for over 6 months and told to apply warm compresses and scrub eye with a baby shampoo/water solution. I developed a rash on my buttocks months into this that my GP diagnosed as shingles and prescribed Famvir.
Avatar m tn have been now 5 months outbreak free (leading a really healthy lifestyle). My doctor prescribed me for my outbreaks famvir, 125 mg twice a day during 5 days. I have a girlfriend and we have talked about this and both of us would like to make sex without condoms. We have sex each 2/3 weeks. I wouldnt like to take suppresive therapy daily, if we are having sex each 2 / 3 weeks (wich is very little). Taking this in mind what would be considered an effective suppresive therapy?
Avatar m tn It should've been 2 500mg famvir tablets to take 2x/day for 1 day. Is that what you were given or just 1 500mg pill?
Avatar n tn d like for us to be able to have oral sex, but not if it will further spread the virus. We are both taking Famvir daily and almost never have outbreaks. I also know that it is possible to spread the virus without an outbreak. Please don't suggest condoms or dental dams - I'd rather just skip it altogether. Also, I know that prophylactics often don't protect against spreading the virus.
Avatar f tn i doubt you have developed a tolerance for famvir. I believe cortisone can affect the immune system, and it's very probable that it's causing an ob. The sores in your mouth may be cankers, which are related to stress and immune system overload. Talk to your doc and see if you can get off that cortisone!
Avatar n tn i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.
Avatar m tn How long does valtrex stay in your system? Say you miss dosage for 2 days... do the meds linger in system for any amount of time? Thanks!
Avatar n tn Hi - No, nothing cures herpes. Antivirals don't cure it, either. They just help prevent outbreaks and reduce shedding if you take them daily. No studies have been done on any of the things you mentioned and transmission, so we can't say how it works for that, but some say L-lysine and Monolaurin really helps them in reducing the frequency of outbreaks. Others don't, so obviously that varies. Be really leery of anything promising a cure.
Avatar n tn Also my doctor prescribed famvir but I don't have genital herpes. Can Famvir help with penis pain?
