Common Questions and Answers about How does valacyclovir work

valtrex

Avatar m tn t seem that I would transmit it via my stomach skin (unless there was another outbreak) does a condom work 100% against asymptomatically transmitting HSV-1 via the genitals? (5) The specialist that I saw said I should stay on Valacyclovir for one year and then "see what happens". What did he mean by this and why one year? (6) Is it possible, since this is HSV-1 where it doesn't want to be, to never have another issue with it?
Avatar m tn 1, The fact that people often have outbreaks following stopping valacyclovir does not mean that their immunity has been diminished. If that were the case, after the initial recurrence off valacyclovir recurrences would become more frequent and that is not the observation. The biology here is complex. 2. Again, we're getting into statistical complexities which would take more space and detail than is appropriate for the Forum.
Avatar n tn Daily valacyclovir can be used to suppress recurrent HSV. Typically HSV-1 infections may be a bit more difficult to suppress than HSV-2 infections for reason that are unclear but most people do find some benefit from suppressive valacyclovir. You discussed the issue of the infectivity of HSV lesions at various stages of the course of infection. Typically infectivitiy decreases over time and as the ulcer disappears there is less infectivity.
Avatar f tn I am certain now that could have attributed to my outbreak, but I am curious how alcohol consumption does reduce the effects of not only Valtrex but of anti-depressants too. Does alcohol affect your immune system and make you more vulnerable? Thanks again for your help.
Avatar f tn thank you so much for giving me these tips. I'm taking Valacyclovir following my doctor's prescription. I maybe try the topical cream you suggested to qucikly ease leaking fluid.
Avatar f tn t know if I should try the valacyclovir. Does this help clarify? Thanks!
Avatar m tn I got infected with genital herpes about 5 months ago, from unprotected oral sex from a striper.... I took valacyclovir 1 g twice a day within 24 hours of the initial episode, and kept taking it until I got better, which took a while (a month almost).... My symptoms (ulcers, itchiness and pain/discomfort) have been recurrent and very persistant since. I think I have had symptoms 3-4 out of every 5 days since day one.
Avatar f tn I'm 36 weeks and I have been on it for 2 weeks. It does not make me feel any different. I have ultrasounds every week to make sure baby is growing good. But that's because I have big babies. And nothing with baby has changed. The meds helps keep you ready for delivery.
Avatar f tn 2 exposure. My question is how could the initial swab be negative and blood work positive? Does that mean i have it or was just exposed to it?
Avatar f tn Welcome to the STD forum. MedHelp encourages forum moderators to avoid overt disagreement with questioners' own doctors. However, I'm afraid your doctor is mistaken. Valacyclovir (Valtrex) does not cause significant liver damage. In fact, it is one of the most nontoxic drugs there is; many patients have taken it for several years without difficulty. Of course any drug can cause very rare or atypical toxicity. Acyclovir (Zovirax) and famciclovir (Famvir) are similarly nontoxic.
Avatar m tn ) the infected person should take suppressive therapy with an antiviral medication such as acyclovir or valacyclovir. While all 3 available antiviral medications are likely to work since their mechanisms of action is the same, only valacyclovir has been studied for this purpose and therefore can be considered to be "proven" for this purpose. Daily suppressive therapy will reduce recurrences, reduce asymptomatic shedding of the virus and reduce transmission.
Avatar m tn Wanting to know which is better for the purpose of decreasing chance that partner will become infected, use to decrease amount of asymptomatic shedding. Keep hearing only Valtrex does this, but someone on site suggested Acyclovir. Thanks in advance!
Avatar f tn that can lessen the numbers of outbreaks or get rid of herpes, I was wondering if anyone tried these meds. and do they work, because most of theses drugs cost lots of money. Thanx for any feedback.
Avatar f tn ve had hsv2 for 25+ years. How frequent are your outbreaks? How were you diagnosed? Were you ever officially typed? You may well have hsv2, but since you can have genital hsv1, something that most docs didn't know about 25 years ago, if you haven't yet officially been typed, it might be a good idea to do that. You can ask your doctor for a type specific IgG blood test, or get one through STDcheck - https://www.stdcheck.com/herpes-i-ii-test.
Avatar m tn m on a very high does of Valtrex, 1G twice a day, prescribed by my Dr. to get this under conrol (for about the past two months). I have had a type specific blood test and am positive for type 1 and 2. I'm in a new relationship and have told my boyfriend. He seems thus far supportive and of course wants to know how to limit his risk. He has HSV1.
Avatar n tn just curious.. cryosurgery doesnt work for u guyz.. or does it works but the warts keep coming back again and again.. what if you keep doing cryosurgery again and again ?
Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar m tn Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your questions. The news is good: The urologis almost certainly is correct. Your partner doesnt have herpes. First, we get lots of questions from men with symptoms like your partner's. Usually no STD can be found. Some of his symptoms (painful urination, but not groin pain) are consistent with urethritis (infection in the urethra), which can be caused by herpes.
Avatar f tn But I think 2 days is too short of a time for anti herpes breakout medicine to work. She takes valacyclovir. Any thoughts?? How could she have gotten herpes.
Avatar n tn My new bottle says CPL Pms-Valacyclovir 500mg instead of CPL valtrex valacyclovir HCI 500mg. The guy at the drug place told my boyfriend that it was suppose to be the same and that it was only $14. He said that valtrex is no $50 for a fill now that there is a generic brand. He said that it should work the same and you take it the same, but he said if I notice I am getting an outbreak that I need to talk to my doc about going back on the other valtrex and see if I can get it cheaper.
Avatar f tn They are suppose to strip my membranes how does that work? Does it hurt.
