how does tamiflu and relenza work

Does anyone know how old are the stocked Tamiflu and Relenza antivirals that the U.S. plans to use if this swine flu worsens? See my post above; if we don't know whether Tamiflu or Relenza past their expiration date [2 years for tamiflu] have still any efficacy, and we don't know how old or new the U.S. stockpiled quantities of these drugs are, then how do we know whether (or rather, to what degree) they are effective?

I recently read an article that said that overuse of antiviral medications like Tamiflu and Relenza could potentially ease the way for drug resistant strains of H1N1. The CDC and WHO are recommending that patients with mild to moderate symptoms should not take antiviral medication. Just a thought.

I actually went to work last thursday and ended up calling in on friday and going back to the dr....I had gotten a sinus infection and bronchitis on top of my flu.. My four-year-old grandson, who has leukemia, was just diagnosed with the flu despite having the shot this year. I also had the shot prior to my diagnosis. Obviously it doesn't cover strain B, which is what he has. My husband and I kept him until this morning so we have been exposed big time. Do you know what worries me about all this though is, IF lots of people are being misdiagnosed they are walking about thinking they are immune, when they simply had a cold or similar. So if this does happen and they have been given tamiflu for the wrong reason it probably wont work when they need it. Not only that it will give false figures and when we think we are in the clear, all the people who were misdiagnosed will probably catch it later towards the winter.

the blood in the phlegm is not a sign of pneumonia on its own. it's not so difficult to get a bit of blood in cough when you cough hard. what is flu type b and how did they diagnose it? there's no need to go back to the doctors so early just stick to their prescription and wait 2-3 weeks if Tamiflu doesn't work just throw it away and go back to the Docs and tell them. anxiety is collateral to all unexplained illness.

There is still no set date as to when the vaccine will become available - it may not be before the Autumn when they expect the pandemic to escalate. And even when the vaccine is available how do you know if it really is safe for a pregnant woman and her baby? Surely only time will tell. I have heard that the treatment drug Relenza is safer to take if you do get the virus as it is less likely to cross the placenta - don't know how true this is.

Hi all. I am so frustrated. I am 37 weeks pregnant, which is already tough, and I have had the flu for a week. I am exhausted and can not seem to get better. I am a stay at home mom with a 2 year old boy and a 3 year old boy. They have been battling the flu as well. My husband also has the flu, but his work will not let him off. I feel so helpless. Tamiflu is completely safe for pregnant mama's. I'm a pharmacy assistant, a dispensary assistant and used to be a medical receptionist and a practice manager. So I'm partially aware of what's safe and whats not (obviously not as advanced as doctors and pharmacists) but it is most definitely safe to take. It's generally used for Influenza though not just a common cold.

Get to a doctor and get a tamiflu prescription asap if you test positive. It took me almost a month to recover.

I am 36 weeks and have the flu. I spoke with my ob last night and he said that he woukd not prescribe me tamiflu because pregnant women shouldn't take antiviral medication. He said to rest and get plenty of fluids and keep monitoring baby's movement.

Ive already started taking tamiflu and cough syrup with a decongestant. How dangerous is the flu to my baby. I know a high temperature can cause birth deffects. Luckly i havent had a fever. But what about the virus in general?

Hi everyone! I went to the ER yesterday because i thought i was getting the flu and strep throat, but according to their tests they both came negative. Well, the doc decided to give me the tamiflu and other medicine for bronchitis. They didn't do a chest xray because im 16 weeks pregnant, but because of my bath cough.
