You're a good friend to be concerned about your friends well being. If "N" is Humulin N, there is no "standard" Humulin N dose that will work for all people or even for the same person in all situations. This applies to other insulin types too. My whole body starts swelling up after weeks of Humulin N shots starting from the feet and legs. I am very sure this is the cause because the swelling subsides and my body will return to normal if I stop my injections. Please help.

If it is just running out refill the prescription early 2 days. If you have Humilin R on hand I question how old it is. If more than 30 days it is probably expired anyway. I also question having this Insulin as it has been largely discontinued for use as better insulins are now available.
But the short answer is Novolog and Humlin R do not act in the same manner so substiuting can be very tricky and is probably not recommended.
Zoe - I think Windchimes meant humulin insulin not huminsulin. Humulin is considered an intermediate acting insulin as its duration is 24 hours, but this can vary per individual. LANTUS, on the other hand, is considered long lasting as its duration is up to 36 hours.

Humulin, more commonly called Humulin NPH, and even more commonly called just NPH, is a long acting insulin. It is absorbed more slowly, and it's effects last longer, about 12 hours. Usually NPH is used in combination with one of the fast acting insulins. An alternative long acting insulin would be Lantus.
Hello I am new to novolin My Dr has me on 15 units twice a day after being on lantus for 1 year and it just did not work at all for me under 29 units was not enough and over 20 units bottomed my sugar out
My question is and this also did this when i was on lantus is it normal after injecting yourself with insulin that my blood sugar spikes up I am talking it can be 150 and after the injection it will jump up to 300 with in 3 hours is this normal or is it just me I know I am not making sense
A. Taking a rapider insulin (Humulin Regular, if that is what you are taking, is much slower than Humalog -- ask you doctor if switching is in order)
B. Taking the mealtime insulin earlier before eating
C. Warming the injection site by massaging it, running it under warm water, or exercising the underlying muscle
D. Choosing foods that are slow to digest (low glycemic index foods)

If you are in US I understand you can buy the old insulins (Humulin N and R over the counter in wallmart quite cheaply). This will be better than none. You can also get cheaper meter and strips the same way. I assume you do know how to use insulin properly.
You need to check how you can get assistance. Do you have a Dr? Can you get access to any assistance. Sounds like you might be in trouble with really high blood sugars. Juice can make your sugars very high.
I've been a type 1 diabetic for 12 1/2 years. My doctor took me of Humulin N because A1c was 5.5 and I would experience lows through out the day. With diet and exercise, my blood sugars were pretty good. When my gynecologist put me on Birth Control Pills, seems as if my blood sugars got worse. The next prescriptions would be Glucophage twice daily. Things didn't get better. This medication was discontinued and I was prescribed Glucovance. Oh my God.
MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED LANTUS INSULIN TO REPLACE THE HUMULIN L INSULIN THAT I HAD TAKEN FOR SEVERAL YEARS. I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN I TAKE THE LANTUS INSULIN PRESCRIBED DOSAGE(S) THAT APPROXIMATELY 15-30 MINUTES LATER I START TO SWEAT PROFUSELY. IS THIS A NORMAL REACTION TO THE LANTUS INSULIN? I VOICED MY CONCERNS TO MY DOCTOR AND HE HAD NO COMMENT. I AM ALSO TAKING SEVERAL DOSES OF HUMULIN R AND HAVE GAINED WEIGHT SINCE I STARTED TAKING THE LANTUS. PLEASE ADVISE. THANK YOU.
They are suppose to strip my membranes how does that work? Does it hurt.
