How does cytomel work

Common Questions and Answers about How does cytomel work

cytomel

Avatar f tn It does look like you don't convert well. Typically, if you convert slowly, FT3 should be higher in its range (as a percent) than FT4 is in its. Taking T3 is what helps this. You might ask for a selenium test. The enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of T4 to T3 is a selenium based enzyme. So, low selenium levels can impact that. The half life of Cytomel is about 2.5 days, so it takes roughly twice that for it to completely leave your system.
1398693 tn?1343684738 Depends on your situation and how long you've had Hashimoto's, whether or not you're on thyroid replacement medication and whether your levels are adequate and stable. Are you on thyroid replacement hormones? If so, what med/dosage/for how long? Are your levels adequate and stable? What tests are being done to assess your thyroid function? You should, at least, be getting TSH, Free T3 and Free T4....
1369218 tn?1282423884 Tinnitus is widely reported with under-medication. I gained 15 pounds in 3 weeks when the doctor lowered my Cytomel, so I know how awful that feels. On the other hand, I lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks when they had it right, so keep on trying to balance your meds ! Good luck with your new doctor.
Avatar f tn What does it mean if your pituitary doesn't work and how does it affect your body and thyroid lab results? I have hashi/hypo. I'm on T4 and T3 meds and my latest labs showed supressed TSH and FT3/FT4 towards the bottom of the range and I have many hypo symptoms. Goolara, I'm hoping you'll be around to answer this too as I don't understand pituitary at all at this point.
649848 tn?1534633700 00 in the morning, so THAT should already be out of my system - or does it stay longer than I thought? I am currently only taking 200 mcg of selenium/day + what's in my food. I read a couple of articles that said too much selenium (more than 150-300 mcg) COULD contribute to diabetes - has anyone else ever heard of that? As long as I remember to take it faithfully every day, that dosage helps eliminate the choking feeling, the sore neck, swelling, etc. With my TSH at 0.
Avatar n tn I cannot see the doctor until late next week and I feel I need to get back on cytomel (T3). How should I switch back to cytomel without doing a lot more damgae to my adrenals? Should I taper the armour while adding the cytomel? Or should I go off all of the armour asap?
Avatar f tn I answered Laura yesterday and it got lost in my computor. Sorry. I have already tried Cytomel, it did nothing. I have taken Synthriod for years and my body stopped using it . I don't know if the Cytomel would work with a natural thyroid. Haven't tried that route. The pharmacy has ordered Naturthyroid(?) for another customer and suggested I try that . I have suffered with this thyroid since the early 50's. Yes, it gave me pernisious anemia.
267288 tn?1256278177 Thank you for your reply. May I ask if you know how long between stopping T3/Cytomel does it take for the T4/Levothyrox to start balancing naturally? Thank you in advance.
Avatar f tn t notice a difference in energy. Also, how long does it take for the Cytomel to get out of your system. In other words, how soon am I likely to feel symptoms if I were to have any? Will it take a few days? I am also worried that I have been on it for so long that the conversion process is damaged. My doctor is very open minded and I suggested we add cytomel years ago.
822804 tn?1298226302 It just does not work to take Cytomel every other day for that reason. In fact, most people on Cytomel. even very low doses of Cytomel, split the dose into at least two doses per day so they don't experience the "rush" and "crash" that happens with just one dose. I'm afraid that taking your Cytomel before your test probably inflated your TT3. It seems your doctor doesn't have any idea on how to dose Cytomel.
Avatar f tn m on Tirosint (T4 med), with an additional T3 med added. My T3 med is generic (cytomel is name brand) and it does well for me. Not everyone is as lucky as gimel, where the weight falls off, doing nothing. I have to work at it and sometimes, even then, have a hard time, but I'm still working on getting my FT3 up, too.
Avatar f tn I took Cytomel for a year and it was a miracle med for me. Previous treatment with T4 alone did nothing for me that I could feel. With the addition of Cytomel, I felt great and was able to eat a normal amount of food without gaining weight. When I changed insurance coverage, I had to use the generic form of T3. It didn't work like the Cytomel did. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? My labs were not different on the Cytomel, but I felt so much better.
Avatar n tn Because you are putting the actual active hormone into your system with cytomel. With combo med or t4 meds your body has to convert it and work at it. Your adrenals are major stress glands and are very sensitive believe it or not to the body over working itself. If they are already weak, then any amount of stress or extra work will tear them down even further. That is my take on it anyway.
Avatar f tn Hi I had a total thyroidectomy in 2003 and I'm suppose to be totally supressed because I had thyroid cancer. I was on Armour thyroid for 2 years and felt pretty good until I changed to levothyroxine because of shortage in supply. Havent felt good since. I'm very tired, muscles ache and feel weak, I'm forgetful, moody and anxious all the time. Does it look like I would benefit from T3 (cytomel)? Or just more levothyroxine?
Avatar n tn Hi ....Is there anyone on cytomel for hypothyroidism? How long does it take to work? I have put on about 10 pounds slowly even though I have been exercising atleast 3 times a week for 5 out of last 6 months. Then finally about a month ago I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism. At least now I know the reason for weight gain. I just started on 25 mcg of cytomel. I can't wait for it to start working. Just this week I started burning at least 500 calories a day by exercising ....
Avatar f tn The reason I'm trying to hide the fact that I took Cytomel from this doc is because after I got fed up with the incompetent office staff and my last appt with this doc, I made an appt with the new one. The new one put me on Cytomel, which didn't work out. I realized my old doc wasn't that bad since the new one was clueless as to how to treat thyroid patients, so I'm going back to him. It's only been 3 months since I saw my last doc.
Avatar m tn If you are taking T4 (besides your cytomel) then you will be converting that T4 to T3. How well you are converting T4 to T3 is another matter.
Avatar f tn 1. How long does it take for the thryoid levels to return back to where they were. And how long do these symptoms last. 2. Was 25 mcg of cytomel a normal amount to add to 0.2 mg of levothroxine.. one other thing - the cytomel was added to increase the effectiveness of antidepressents.

Avatar f tn I have had Hashimoto's for years. Recently was started on 5mcg of Cytomel twice a day in addition to the 175 mcg of Synthroid that I have been taking. My cardiologist just called and told me that he had checked some thyroid labs along with his cardiac labs and that I need to contact my endocrinologist right away. My TSH is 0.07 and my FT4 is 1.58. Is this anything to be worried about?
