How does a colonic work

Common Questions and Answers about How does a colonic work

colon

Avatar f tn Hi, Colonic inertia is a condition in which the nerves and/or muscles of the colon do not work normally. As a result, the contents of the colon are not propelled through the colon normally. The cause of colonic inertia is unclear. In some cases, the muscles or nerves of the colon are diseased. Colonic inertia also may be the result of the chronic use of stimulant laxatives .Please consult a neurologist for the review of the EMG results and get a nerve conduction study done .
Avatar n tn I have a question for you....How long did you suffer from chronic constipation before you decided on getting the surgery? I take it you had a defacting proctagram test and it showed that your rectum is working just fine, but the colonic transit study showed that none of the markers moved over a period of a week, right?
Avatar n tn What will life be like for me if I get this procedure? What are the worst case scenerios for poor results or long term complications from it. Is the ileal pouch to serve as a substitute rectum a good idea. I would like to experience commentary from as many people as possible who have had such surgery and read studies of how people fare in long term follow up. I worry that I could be crippled by long tern consequences of the operation and might wish I had never gone througy with it.
Avatar f tn Not to mention the last experimental drug they put me on made me so sick I ended up missing a week of work and even leaving work early cause it made me feel like I had the flu. Laxatives have the same effect on me as they make the colon try to work and just make me sick in the process. Me and my husband both personally do not agree with this option even though the surgeon feels I should give it a shot.
Avatar n tn Thanks again. How is she now? Did only colonic irrigation helped her and how many sessions she underwent?
Avatar f tn Biospy report says Sections show of the colonic biospy show a sessile serrated Adenoma In which no evidence of dysplasia or malignancy is seen, also Present are seperate fragments of Colonic Mucosa showing the presence Of a lymphoid aggregate . Multiple Levels have been performed .
Avatar n tn Not sure why you think you have colonic inertia because your doctor had a hard time performing a colonoscopy. Colonic inertia is extremely rare and indicates that the muscles of the colon do not function. It has nothing to do with the shape of the colon. You also do not develop this as a complication of surgery. I have colonic inertia and had my colon removed because of this 6 days ago. I am sitting in my hospital room as we speak.
Avatar m tn Hi, I have had the same exact problem for many years. The past 17 being the worst. I am a Nutritionist,47 years old. First of all, make sure you are not eating ANY dairy products of any kind and that you are eating lots of raw fruit, vegetables, and whole grains like oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat bread and whole wheat pasta. NO refined grains like white bread, white rice or white pasta either. Try using Ducolax brand rectal suppositories. Not regular rectal suppositories.
Avatar n tn Still having trouble moving my bowels, sometimes days before I could go and then a week. I called a gastro doc and he set up a colonoscopy. I had to prep 2 days before the procedure. The morning of the procedure I still was NOT cleaned out!!!! YUCK.......still had to have the test. Now come to find out i have COLONIC INTERIA, but NEVER had problems before the hysterectomy. Is it possible that my gyne screwed something up??
Avatar n tn I am unsure if i have IBS but closest topic. I had a colonic irrigation last week to help reduce bloating, it wasnt serious bloating i just thought that i might acheive a flatter stomach. However immediately after the colonic irrigation and ever since i have experienced severe bloating, especially after a meal, i look pregnant and it feels hard with such pressure that it is very uncomfortable to move and i feel like i have to take deeper breaths.

Avatar f tn Hi, I'm a nutritionist who has been suffering from chronic bowel problems my entire life. As a result I've learned a great deal about them. I hope I can help you. First of all, are you on a high fiber, low animal fat diet? (Be honest with yourself) In other words, do you eat lots of whole grains like..brown rice, whole wheat bread, oatmeal,etc..and raw vegetable salads, raw fruit, and beans?
Avatar n tn I know this is an area that is being researched, but unfortunately not actively. But at one point in time I know a group in Israel developed a colonic pacemaker - much like a stomach pacemaker. In trial studies, it apparently did a good job for some, but not for others. If you're hesitant, I'd suggest you postpone the surgery and do some more investigation until you're satisfied with your decision.
Avatar n tn m having a huge problem with hemorrhoids too , three years ago I did a colonoscopy and the doc said every thing is fine I was put on Mira lax and for a while it did work but than I wasn't having much results any way few months ago I started a colon cleansing program called colonix from Dr Natura and boy was it worth for the first time on my life I had bowl movements every day when I woke up and no cramping no pain and even better no hemorrhoids but than after three months It was required th
Avatar n tn Polyp is usually a mushroom like mass growing from the colonic wall and bulging into the colon lumen. Histological examination will probably be made and then it will be said if polyps were cancerous or not. In diverticulosis small pouches bulge out from the colonic wall. They by themselves are not harmful but may cause constipation and may get inflammed (diverticulitis). So, it depends on your symptoms and on what exactly will be the result of investigation of polyps.
Avatar f tn I have suffered from chronic constipation for 3-4 years and have had no relief from any other treatment. I have had extensive tests, including a sitz marker transit (23 were still present on day 6), a defecogram, MRI, motility test, and more. I was diagnosed with slow transit and pelvic floor dysfunction. I tried biofeedback therapy, but it never showed that I have PVD.
Avatar f tn I want to have a colonic but unsure if it will interfere with my VP shunt.
Avatar f tn m pretty sick of having things stuck into orifices during this whole process, the idea of paying good money to have someone stick a hose pipe up...ok, you get the drift, my mother ( a former nurse and therefore clearly in the pay of the pharmacutical companies) always said that this was a one-way valve ONLY. And no, it isn't just MS, when my much missed Dad was dying of cancer, we got inundated with these things.
Avatar f tn I am a 35 year old female with no pregnacies. I am seeing a GI and a colon/rectal surgeon. I have been recently diagnosed with colonic inertia and have been advised to administer warm water enemas every other day for now. Laxatives do not work for me. Upon further testing of the stomach it appears that does not digest properly either (lazy). I have been placed on domperidone for that but not getting any relief from the bloating and full feeling.
Avatar n tn Hi Judy - just another couple of thoughts - try to have the operation performed at a hospital with a dedicated G.I. team where they are carrying out several total colectomies per day/week rather than several per year. I don't live in America but I believe that the Mayo Clinics G.I. Departments are "leading edge" in this respect. Also it may be possible to perform this operation laparascopically rather than "invasively/surgeon's hands inside you".
Avatar f tn what does it mean when th biopsy says exclusion of infections and parasitic agents?
Avatar m tn you need to know how many you have to work with and pick a clean day...a QUIT day...and stick to it...I did a 10 day taper which is fast but I was ready..I planned a long weekend off of work and made it...tapering is not easy for an addict and was not for me at all...but it helps when you are at a high dose...you dont feel on top of the world during your taper but I would get your dose down a little before u CT...
Avatar m tn In my opinion, there is never any need for a colonic. The body does a great job of detoxifying and cleaning out one's intestinal area. Also, there is the possible harm that you mentioned. You are better off thinking about your food intake to insure a proper amount of fruits, vegetables, and fiber, in general.
