how buprenorphine works

Can anyone help me with some knowledge of this medication????? I have a relative who's suffered badly for years and tried every clinic and therapy and medication and nothing helped till now. He's lately been prescribed this buprenorphine and he swears it's just about given him his life back. My question is it a narcotic, therefore addictive. Does it have the nasty side effects of oxy or other pain meds.

I think what your looking for here is a get out of jail free card and there isent one you just going to have to bit the bullet and go threw the withdrawal we have recently had 2 members come off sub at 2mg and both had mild withdrawals but sub is a funny drug I have herd of people taking it down to crumbs and still go threw major withdrawals its a crap shoot you wont know till you try it let us know how this works out for you good or bad it helps us help others good luck and God bless.......

There are many that have used sub for pain!!!! How well it works or not I really dont know .

Dr. Junig, I think that this is the best description that I have read describing the way that buprenorphine works. So, I have to admit that I'm very confused by what I'm experiencing as I'm tapering from Suboxone. I have decreased my dose from 12mg two weeks ago and am currently at 8mg. I've been on Suboxone since the beginning of February. After two weeks, I seldom had hot flushes or sweats. Now, I'm getting seven or eight a day.

2 did I need 2 b on sub longer tto get through comfortably... N if so how much longer ... And is it possible for the meth 2 come out of ur body while u put suboxone in ( essentially jus another form of opiate) 3 how much longer will these w/d symptoms last if I don't continue taking suboxone... My concern is am I jus substituting 1 opiate for another and is there a way for me in my situation to get through this comfortably without having to stay on a substance for too long...

Tuck - the way buprenorphine works is that it latches on very strongly to some, but not all, opiate receptors in the brain but not with a perfect fit like other opiates. I know of only one other opiate that will knock bupe right off its pins (I'm sure there are others) and take its place and that's fentanyl. That gives it both partial agonist and partial antagonist qualities.

Was wondering if you are still pondering my question from June 23/24th. Still @ a cross roads....Also was told before that suboxone allow the brains neurochemistry the ability to heal/return to normal after several months. I'm wondering how that is possible considering it in itself is a powerful narcotic. It's 1/2 life is incredible...

From other patients' experiences, decreasing the dose and discontinuing buprenorphine are not easy tasks for many. Under federal law, DATA 2000 or Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000, only qualified physicians can prescribe and treat opioid addiction with controlled narcotics medications, such as buprenorphine products (Suboxone, Subutex or generic alternatives).

Only you know how your body functions and reacts to medication. Just because this works for many doesnt mean it works for everyone.

i am waiting to go on a buprenorphine maintenance prescription which will be next month.i have some buprenorphine tablets but when i take them i go straight into cold turkey.i have taken the buprenorphine tablets for a few years before but my prescription got stopped so i opted for the above tablets for the time being whilst im on the waiting list to go back on the buprenorphine.
