Melatonin is a hormone secreted by pineal gland and is very similar in chemical structure to indomethacin without the risk of gastro intestinal side effects. That’s the reason melatonin is now being considered as an effective treatment option. Patients with history of severe allergies are advised not to take melatonin in general. Melatonin is basically the ''sleep hormone'' it it produced naturally from the pineal gland in your brain and light and darkness have the most influence on it's production. Avatar f tn i study in school about it.. it really is just a hormone that your body creates on its own. given that said it should be fine to take it. ask your doc first though. thats jus my opinion of knowing what exactly it is.

It's thought to be more effective with the latter of those two. Some folks here swear by it, and more power to 'em. For others, including myself, it didn't do a thing. It can produce a nasty side effect of vivid and disturbing dreams for some, but I say, if sleep is a problem for you, you might as well give it a go.

Avatar m tn I have not got my thyroid checked but after taking melatonin I am starting to think that there is a sure link between the thyroid and melatonin ( research also shows that melatonin suppress the appetite and is linked to the thyroid, and also shows that it fights cancer. ). For a week now I have been taking melatonin supplements (6 mg) and I have gotten the best sleep in life.
Avatar n tn t know of any data regarding melatonin interacting w/ thyroid hormone but any pill has the potential to interfere w/ absorption of thyroid hormone. Might be worth trying to separate these by an hour or so.

4341997 tn?1514588688 I have taken Melatonin for about 20 years and I am now trying to taper off. It is a hormone and I don't think it is healthy for long term use. My standard does was 3 mg but one doctor had me on 20 mg for the antioxidant effect for a while. Funny at that dose it does not caused any sleepiness. I've taken the mcg's and up to that 20 mg and the small doses did help me sleep.

Melatonin is a hormone naturally present in everyone's body that helps regulate when we go to sleep. Melatonin is sometimes given to help insomnia (along with other melatonin agonists) but they generally only provide a relatively small benefit. That said, they're probably pretty safe (though sometimes expensive).

Melatonin is one such hormone and it appears to be the primary sleep-regulating hormone of the body. It is secreted in relation with normal day/night cycles. It affects sleep itself, decreasing sleep latency, increasing sleep efficiency, and increasing the total sleep time. Melatonin acts on the melatonin receptors.

Seizures have also been reported in patients who were previously “controlled” on a stable dose of anticonvulsant when thyroxine replacement therapy was initiated (Neurology. 1996;47:605-606). It is thus not clear that thyroxine “suppresses” antiseizure medications in a direct way.
