Avatar f tn As the presidential campaign unfolds, the differences in approaches to Medicare by President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney have taken center stage. But what is getting far less scrutiny: Romney's plans for Medicaid. He would convert the health care program for the poor, disabled and elderly into a block grant to the states and sharply reduce funding over time.
Avatar f tn One of my jobs is an in-home caregiver for elderly and handicaped people. A new client I started taking care of today needs some SERIOUS deep cleaning. Shower, toilet, mopping, etc. I'm in my second trimester. (14.2 weeks) Anyone know if cleaning products safe for baby at this point? I wear disposable gloves, a face mask, and long sleeves and pants anytime I'm cleaning a client's home.
Avatar n tn Hello, My father who is 80 years of age suffers from Alzheimer's and has been in a nursing home for 5 years. He has been on a "low" does of Risperdal for the same period of time. His caregivers claim that it is for his own safety and theirs as he becomes agitated periodically. They have not described to me in any detail how this agitation manifests itself.

Avatar f tn For safety focus on the methadone. I assume that is for a chronic pain condition? Methadone can be tricky. If the patient ever passes out and can not be awakened, it might be a methadone overdose and patient needs the antidote. (I always wished I had a life alert alarm that would alert me if someone stopped breathing so I could quickly react and save them.) There are new ways of treating certain types of chronic pain, especially if patient has physically recovered but still feels pain.
Avatar f tn Can you do work that doesn't involve caring for him? When I was heavily pregnant with my first I was working in aged care and one of the residents was very verbally abusive towards me. I rang my boss in tears and they said I didn't have to go to his house anymore (was in home care for elderly people). Do you have any sick leave saved up? Maybe have a chat with HR and see what they say.
874521 tn?1424116797 aww once again our home is blessed with the addition of my grandDOG Marley for the holidays.... we have a system here. the hallway of my tiny home has a barrier up....not to keep my cats in...but to keep the dog out...the cats stay in the bedroom area while dear Marley gets the kitchen/livingroom area.. Occasionally Nemo ventures over the barrier(only a foot high..so I can easily step over) he'll come out and stare Marley down than jump back over to safety.....
Avatar f tn The boy had downs syndrome among other things and the doctor was to remove the boy fetus allowing the girl to continue. He removed the wrong twin. Now this doctor was not qualified to perform this operation but decided to do so stating he did not want to send the patient to another state to have one of the few known specialists do this procedure. As it turned out there was a specialist in the state, in Tampa that could have done it. Naturally the guys license was revoked as a result.

Avatar n tn Please take your relatives and your daughter- in- law’s parents into confidence and discuss the issues. It is for the benefit for the mother and the child. If you are not able to sort out the matter by discussion, please take a psychotherapist’s help. Expert help may make her understand the situation. Another alternative would be that you can go and live with her if possible. Some arrangements have to be made according to everyone’s convenience.
Avatar m tn While this and other clinical experience have not identified differences in responses between the elderly and younger patients, greater sensitivity of some older individuals cannot be ruled out. 900662 tn?1469390305 The links work fine JB. Thanks for sharing them. This information about statins has been around for some time now. As far as I'm concerned, the medical community and FDA seem to want to downplay the potential dangers of statins for some reason. That second link you shared is a perfect example of the double-talk used. The guy being interviewed finds several ways to say, "Well they can do bad things but don't worry yet." So when do we worry?

Avatar n tn For example, if her mind was in such a state where no one could care for her unless she was heavily sedated in a nursing home, we would consider removing the pacemaker. For now, I believe we did the right thing.

Avatar f tn My grandmother is 85, and of late, she has started to show signs of cognitive impairment. She talks gibberish and is disconnected from the present. She is immobile and cannot leave home. We consulted our GP who said that nothing can be done because this is happening due to old age. He also said that medicines for mental illnesses are very strong, and since she is frail and weak, she cannot be given such medicines. Is there nothing that can be done? We're very confused about this situation.
611606 tn?1315517767 I took him to the Vet, and was told that h was very geriatric, so of course I brought him back home, so relived I didn't have to put him to sleep. Now he is getting worse, his cries sound like he is in pain, he longer walks well. I don't want him to suffer, he has been such a huge part of my life. A part of me feels very guilty, but the other part feels like I need to end his suffering.
Avatar n tn As the brain shrinks with age, the subdural space enlarges and the veins that traverse the space must travel over a wider distance, making them more vulnerable to tears. This and the fact that the elderly have more brittle veins make chronic subdural bleeds more common in older patients. Other risk factors for subdural bleeds include taking blood thinners (anticoagulants), long-term alcohol abuse, and dementia”. Taken from http://en.wikipedia.
Avatar f tn s office one day a couple of years ago and when I went to the front desk to check out, the receptionist was having a hard time on the phone with a patient. The thing was, the patient was elderly and expected the doctor to be able to go to the hospital in the event that the patient was admitted.
Avatar n tn My Mom is 92 years old. Has been living on her own in Elderly housing for 20 years. Her dementia consisted of repeating and repeating, forgetting who visited, etc. but went throughout her normal activities w/some services very well and very happiy. Always knew us but was starting to forget other people but after prompting she would be ok. 3 weeks ago she developed a very severe resistant UTI and then got c-dift (not sure how to spell that). Anyway ended up dilusional, confused, etc.
Avatar n tn Is she going to be able to function w/o having pain control? The drip is out of the question for getting her clean. She has to recognize the problem, and be willing to at least try to change. Talking w/her doctor is a good idea. Be prepared to give specifics....how much she takes....if she falls asleep d/t being sedated and the stove is on, or she is putting her health or safety at risk, etc.
161427 tn?1229911282 s home, breaking her trochanter (the top of the large, upper leg bone (the femur) where it goes into the hip). This was repaired with pins. A few months later, after becoming mobile again, she developed a compression fracture in her 2nd lumbar vertebra which had no discernible, direct cause (she is very osteoporotic). A kyphoplasty was done (balloons and cement are inserted to prop up and fixate the break, a little more ambitious than a vertebralplasty and requiring a hospital stay).
Avatar n tn Go with lots and lots of fiber, at least the minimun daily requirement and this should help unless she is developing IBS. Try this and if it doesn't work have her see a GI dr.
Avatar n tn We are trying to find an option other than filing for legal guardianship - but we are coming up empty. In the meantime, we are terrified about the safety of the baby. She is allowing him to stay with us during the day while she works, and she did just start a new full-time job as a home care nurse. However, she is still insisting that she keep him at night - and she lives about 25 miles away from us. Her parents are elderly and not able to care for the baby although they live close to her.
