Holding plavix for surgery

Common Questions and Answers about Holding plavix for surgery

plavix

255163 tn?1376869746 Following this I was on Plavix for 3 months. Another patient in the same cardiac rehab class was the same - Plavix for 3 months, and yet another is still taking Plavix and has been told to continue taking it. Maybe a difference of opinion with our ccrdiologists although maybe it depends on what type of stent you have .
Avatar m tn I also wonder about the need for procedures like colonoscopy or other such procedures where the Plavix may cause a concern. Any thoughts?
Avatar n tn for AFib clotting/strokes. I don't know why your doc preferred to prescribe Plavix for DVT. But prasugrel and ticlopidine are next generation drugs of the same kind as Plavix. Maybe they'd have fewer side effects than Plavix. Another new anticoagulant (with a different MOA) that isn't so well known is based on... leech saliva!
Avatar m tn One cardiologist recommended ending Plavix entirely, second (same practice) would rather wait for a large study about to be completed. Suggestions? This discussion is related to Non-cardiac surgery after Taxus Stent and Plavix.
Avatar m tn The Gastric Bypass requires me to be off of Plavix for 7-14 days. My cardiologist is opposed to discontinuation of platelet therapy for a short time in order to have a proceddure. I want to know why it is recommended to remain on plavix for a minimum of 12 months after the stent? Does the risk of thormbosis decrease so significantly at 12 months that it is worth the risk of another Major Cardiac Event?
Avatar n tn Both my mom and dad were on plavix. When my mom needed surgery, she was taken of the plavix for awhile. However, when my dad needed surgery, he was kept on it. Your doctors need to make that decision. Good Luck! Wishing you well, and wishing you enough...
Avatar m tn Last time I went off plavix for 2 days I had my 2nd heartattack so I CAN NOT GO OFF OF IT..I hac surgery to remove a salivary gland and had to stay overnight for obsevation and everything turned out all right.. Is there anyway to remove these polops while on Plavix ?
Avatar m tn What is the possibility of having surgery? If I have surgery is the Plavix stopped for a number of days and then resumed?
255163 tn?1376869746 later he was taken off plavix for surgery. He got thru the surgery just fine, but suffered a major heart attack in the recovery room, and after 3 months while in the hospital died of another major heart attack.
Avatar n tn I know I am hanging on by a thread because I need surgery very soon with this massive hernia and Gall Bladder, and have shortness of breath and I keep putting it off because I would have to be taking off of Plavix and Asprin for a few days, and if I have surgery, that is MORE blood clots.
Avatar f tn Several weeks ago, the cardiologist took me off of Coumadin and added two 81-mg, aspirin and recommended that I stay on the Plavix for the biopsy. The radiologist's office contacted the cardiologist and they agreed I could go off Plavix for seven days prior to the biopsy. At this point, I am more concerned about a blood clot in my stents than breast cancer. Is it safe for me to discontinue Plavix?
Avatar m tn Are you on any acid reflux meds or anti depressants. It was recently reported that the PPIs for reflux inhibits the plavix from working. Same for SSRI anti depressants. I also would like to know what kind of blood test was given showing the plavix is not working. I didn't think there was such a test.
Avatar f tn The whole idea of plavix is to make platelets less active and a patient is now generally on this medication for a number of years. My first stent in 2007 required plavix for 1 year. My new stents in Sept 09 require plavix for 2-3 years minimum. They seem to now believe the longer you are on plavix the better, to prevent clogging of stents. They should be taking blood tests to make sure her clotting factor is as required. I assume she is on aspirin daily also?
Avatar n tn Hello, I had 3 medicated stents in 2005, and then 2 more the next year due to late thrombosis. I am on Plavix and my nuerosurgeon says I need fusion surgery for my back. However, he will not do the surgery until I come off of Plavix for 6 weeks to make sure platlets are sticky again. However, I did have the stents close up last time off of Plavix. My family Dr says they can use laviquin? However Nuerosurgeon says it is not the same as Plavix.
Avatar f tn I was on plavix for 18 months for my first stent and it never formed clots, but I believe there have been cases where it has happened. IF clots are going to form, they are usually very quickly as the plavix wears off. You don't have to ween off plavix, you simply stop it. It isn't a medication that affects your metabolism or mental state. Is it your general Doctor or Cardiologist who has stopped the medication? In the UK we are told we will be on Plavix 2-3 years or even possibly life.
Avatar n tn My husband is 64 had 5 bipass surgery in 2002. we moved to new hampshire 2 years ago & his caardiologist wants to stop his plavix... He has been told the risk is too high for bleeding. 8 years on, is this good?
Avatar n tn My neurosurgeon says I need to go off Plavix for 6 weeks prior to surgery. I am very concerned about going off Plavix since past thrombosis and nearly dying. Can someone tell me the risk percentages for thrombosis if you had it prior. My wife would like for me to hold off of surgery until absolutely necessary or they come up with more info on Plavix. Thank you for your help.
Avatar f tn We were told that he needs bypass surgery and it has been scheduled for March 11. The doctor said he needs to stop plavix 7 days before. I'm worried because he just will have had the stent put in at just over 3 weeks.
Avatar n tn Jan. 06 I was scheduled for hip replacement surgery, before I was to be cleared I had to have a stress test...The doctors found a blood flow problem and found I had 4 blockages...I had 3 medicated stents put in and the fourth was 100% blocked, doctors were not overly concerned as they have noted that in prior cases the artery where that blockage is have branched off and created a new entrance to the heart...Here I am 2 years later, still needing hip replacement...
976897 tn?1379167602 Just to complicate the Plavix/generic Plavix issue, I was told to stop taking Plavix after bypass surgery, and the bruising immediately became a bigger issue and remains a bigger problem today. I'm not sure the bruising/bleeding issue is completely understood. I still take 80mg aspirin, and wonder if that is the cause. pippi331, sometimes one is allergic to the filler with generic drugs. I'd sure report your situation as soon as possible.
Avatar f tn I talked to my cardiologist and he said he had talked to the surgeon and for me to come off the Plavix for 10 days. Three weeks after stopping Plavix for the surgery I was back in the cath lab and had a stint inserted. I do not come off Plavix for any reason now. I have 6 stints in my heart and one in my neck. Last week they would not remove my cataract because it was only 3 months since I had 2 stints inserted in my heart. Could not do it until six months had passed. I had open heart in 2004.
Avatar n tn Thank you for your answer. My cardiologist mentioned stopping the warfarin and going with lovenox for 3 days prior to a catherization but said there was no need to stop taking plavix.
Avatar n tn I am 67yom, and wanted to know more about taking Plavix (s/p stent x1). when was it introduce for usage ?, and How long can one take it with out hurting other parts of body?...My Dr seems to think that I'm to old to know anybetter (just from him always changing the subject or answering the phone just when I need an answer). Plavix is so exs pensive for me...on some days, my choose is food, and or medician. This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.
Avatar m tn I am taking plavix for 10 years for a long history with heart problems. Stent, heart attack etc.. I am wondering how long a person should be on this.
Avatar m tn In getting ready for sius surgery in 2008 I was taken off my aspirin for 8 days and the day before the surgery had the second stroke. My cardiologist put me on Plavix plus the two aspirin and had me take 4 plavix the first day I got them. Now I take one Plavix a day plus the two aspirin. After a bout with Pneumonia and Bronchitis and being in the hospital twice I was sent to a Pulmonary Dr.
Avatar n tn Some doctors recommend 1 to 2 years on Plavix with coated stents. Other doctors recommend being on Plavix for the rest of the persons life. It is extremely important that you stay on Plavix for as long as your doctor recommends. Going off of Plavix could mean a blood clot with a severe heart attack. You will need to talk to your doctor to find out how urgent it is to have the skin cancers removed and cataract done. Replacing the 2 wire pacemaker with the 3 wire pacemaker is a surgery.
Avatar f tn What happens if I need to have surgery with a stent in my heart? I've heard about staying off Plavix but it hasn't been a year yet. Also what happens if you develop cancer? Do you have to come off Plavix completely? What other medications need to be changed? I have a complex ovarian cyst that I'm waiting the results of an MRI on - although MRIs don't seem to be the best test for overian cancer. I haven't started menopause yet.
