Avatar m tn However, it is designed primarily for HIV infected people with questions about treatment and living with HIV/AIDS, not those who have been exposed and are concerned about becoming infected. Still, it has accurate information about how HIV is transmitted -- and most important for many users of this forum, how it is NOT transmitted, e.g. by kissing, body contact, exposure to most body fluids, and so on.

Avatar m tn Heterosexual HIV transmission in the UK occurs mostly among immigrants from AIDS-endemic area, like southern Africa. Even among CSWs in London, only about 1 in 1,000 have HIV -- so the chance your partner had HIV is extremely low. Therefore, from a strict risk-assessment perspective you didn't need HIV testing at all; the benefit of testing is purely from the psychological support you should be feeling from knowing for sure that you didn't catch it.
Avatar m tn Options for Anonymous or Confidential Testing in Massachusetts" and open it up. http://www.maclearinghouse.com/PDFs/HIV_AIDS/hiv-counseling-eng.pdf See what it has to say on page 2 regarding the window period. "It can take up to 6 weeks for your body to produce enough antibodies to be detected by the test" By the way, the first page shows how this is sponsored and supported by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health HIV/AIDS Bureau - June 2003.
Avatar m tn No one on the internet can tell you if you have HIV or not. Go to a GUM clinic and get tested for HIV. You should be doing this regularly if you engage in risky behavior. Condoms work.
Avatar m tn The chance you caught HIV from a heterosexual exposure is extremely low, especially if your partner and you are both long-time UK residents, i.e. not immigrants from an country with high rates of HIV/AIDS. Finally, it is nearly impossible to have HIV for 9 years and not know it; by now you would be very sick, perhaps dead. So there is absolutely no chance HIV is a problem here.
Avatar m tn So based on the info you read in her obit, that she requested donations to be made to a hospice and AIDS project, you have concluded that she was indeed HIV+ and died of AIDS? Wow, thats sum conclusion. More likely however, is that in the intervening years she either became involved, as a volunteer or knew someone who had passed away to an AIDS related illness and decided that instead of flowers she would want people to make a donation to said hospice\AIDS project.
Avatar m tn Personally I believe that there are far worse conditions than HIV and AIDS. I think that the situation with HIV has changed dramatically in the last few years and that medication has mede a huge difference in the prognosis of this condition. I think what is wrong is the stigma associated with it and the ignorance about it.
Avatar n tn What I meant by my last comment Lizzie was there are GUM or even Sexual health websites in UK which rather than just saying oral sex is a 'theoretical' risk of hiv state that there has been documented cases where hiv has occured this way. I don't mean this to be be a 'yeh but, what if but no but ' kind of discussion and I know that HIV test is only way to definitely know. The somewhat contradictory statements on certain websites make me confused.
Avatar n tn Some people with advanced HIV/AIDS suffer from frequent or severe HSV infections, either oral or genital. But that is never the only symptom; such people are generally very sick from advanced AIDS. Of all people with oral cold sores, probably 1 in a million has HIV. Forget it. "I am showing signs of OCD?" Yup. Take care of that OCD.
Avatar m tn Sorry that I'm not up to date on healthcare in the UK. Does "going private" mean you've received the medication from an HIV Clinic? Or are those also run by the NHS? Please tell me you didn't get them on the street or online! I'm sure you're aware of the dangers of going that route. I have included contact information for "AIDS VANCOUVER" in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I feel confident they will be able to help with your questions.
Avatar m tn ***Sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum but I wanted to pass this along*** My name is Paul and over the last 90 days I have been in a high state of anxiety, bordering on panic, after what I thought was a potential oral HIV exposure. I am a 42 year old male in the PA area. I am writing this post to give a summary of my experiences and what I have learned from them because it may provide benefit to others in the same situation. There seem to be plenty.
Avatar f tn In 2006, heterosexual transmission accounted for 61% of those diagnosed in the UK. However, the overall risk of acquiring HIV through heterosexual sex **in the UK** remains relatively low. The majority of people diagnosed in the UK with HIV transmitted through heterosexual sex were actually exposed to the virus overseas, often in areas such as sub-Saharan Africa where it is more widespread.
Avatar f tn From the people I have spoken to - Terrence Higgins Trust in the UK, National Aids Helpline UK and a G.U.M clinic at a hospital - both parties would need to have a pretty serious mouth trauma with bleeding for infection to occur Listen to the Drs on the HIV forum they know what they are talking about, unless you have a serious mouth trauma and are incredibly unlucky, the risks of getting HIV from oral sex alone are vanishingly small.
Avatar m tn HIV is not transmitted by oral sex.

Avatar m tn Latex condoms, when used consistently and correctly, are highly effective in preventing the sexual transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. In addition, consistent and correct use of latex condoms reduces the risk of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including diseases transmitted by genital secretions, and to a lesser degree, genital ulcer diseases. Condom use may reduce the risk for genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and HPV-associated diseases, e.g.
