I've never been into the whole low carb craze and always knew it would be a way of life I would never be able to stick with for the rest of my life. Personally, I have anywhere in the mid to late 100's and sometimes even well into the low 200g carbs a day and have for the last year and a half and yet I've lost 165 lbs.
Avatar f tn In high glycaemic index foods, the carbohydrates are broken down very quickly, and have bigger impact on blood sugar than lower GI foods. Ie. beans and bagel. Bagel is high GI and will have more impact on blood sugar than beans, which are low GI - even considering they have the same amount of total carbs.

Eat olive oil, ghee, butter, coconut oil, cheese, avocado, nuts and seeds, cream, whole milk... stay away from low carb low calorie foods, processed foods, breads, rice, oats.. starchy foods. But, their blood sugar is a huge problem, going high and low, and they hit the wall during parts of the day where they need to drink tons of coffee to stay awake and they get raging hunger. In fact, I used to be brainwashed about the fat phobia too. When I took the leap and tested LCHF way of eating, I was remarkably impressed with the results.

You can use your blood sugar meter to determine how much carbs you can handle. Normal blood sugars should be in the range of 70 - 120 (3.8 - 6.6), with sugars mostly being in the 80s and 90s (4.4s - 5.0s ).

The diet that absolutely does not work is a diet that is high in both carbs and fats. For me, considering that diabetes is an inability of the body to properly process glucose I choose low carb / ketogenic diet. This diet is fairly easy to follow. No grains, no sugars, no starchy vegetables.

Opt for the complex carbs such as whole grains, veggies, etc and eliminate simple carbs like sugary foods and those made from white flour/rice. Avatar f tn We don't know your diet -- you say low carb, but all fruits and vegetables are carbs, so did you cut those out too? Much of our energy comes from deep green foods. Protein foods can be high in tryptophan, so they can make you sleepy. That's why you need a balance of carbs and protein -- carbs give us quick energy. So again, what's your diet and do you exercise and do you sleep well? Have your iron and B12 levels been tested? Are you depressed? Lots of reasons to be tired.

Do not go low fat, your growing baby NEEDS saturated fat in order to build healthy neuro-processors. Just stay away from trans-fats (mostly found in processed foods). Also, eliminate as much unnecessary sugars from your diets, or limit them to infrequent treats.

It is best to stay away from processed foods and probably for your waistline to stay away from too many complex carbs but carbs in general aren't bad. Avatar f tn I was feeling weak and changed my diet to protiens with each meal (lean) complex carbs, and low sugar fruits. I eat q3hrs and use the 2 fruits for the first half of the day. My DR said this is great because sugar & simple carbs spike the insulin and then you can drop.. For me when I was eating wrong I gained a little weight that I had lost yrs ago by doing this. My metabolism is strange. Keep on Truckin Forward...
Tbd Many chose a new way of eating (WOE), LCHF (Low Carb High Fat). as diabetics it is carbs that raise BG, eating low carb works well for controlling BG. The "eat low fat" mantra is based on BAD science. even the US CDC says cholesterol in the diet is not a concern. Also when carbs are removed from the diet then some other form of energy is needed... fat. I eat under 50 gr of carbs a day and have been since 2000.
Avatar f tn Went through the same thing. Diabetes made me really thirsty. As a result, I drank a lot of water, diet soda and juice. This caused me to flush out all of the vitamins and minerals of my body. I am reallllly low on just about everything. Just started suplements and a big daily dose of magnesium as suggested by my nutritionist. Since I've eaten very low carbs and kept my sugar lower in addition to the supplements, the cramps are gone.
