High blood sugar ketoacidosis

Common Questions and Answers about High blood sugar ketoacidosis

blood-sugar

Avatar n tn my blood sugar reading is currently 560 I have type 2 diabetes when do I have to worry?
Avatar n tn This is the presence of high levels of keytones simultaneous with high blood sugar levels. It reflects that the body is burning its own fat (regardless of how many carbs are eaten) because insulin is not able to work. This can be life threatening. A low carb diet can be very effective in controlling blood sugars. The more extreme carb restriction is recommended by Dr. Richard Bernstein (Diabetes Solutions) of 35 g of carbs per day.
Avatar n tn I checked my urine for ketones at that time and it showed moderate to high amounts of ketones in my urine. This afternoon after I ate, my blood sugar was 521 and I checked for ketones again. On the second check, it was negative to a trace. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this to happen? From going high to moderate amounts to none at all? I often think I am experiencing some strange signs which are probably due to the high blood sugar and nothing else.
Avatar m tn His doctor says that his blood sugars are well controlled, and he even wakes with low blood sugar (2 m.mol), and has to get up and eat to correct this. He takes his own blood sugars every day as well as 6 monthly testing by the diabetic nurse, but I am worried about possible Ketoacidosis.
961466 tn?1247550382 Sounds like she needs to see a doctor right away, or be taken to an Emergency Room. Are her blood sugars extremely high? If so she might be experiencing DKA and needs to go to the ER right away.
Avatar f tn insulin injection, medications) You can develop ketoacidosis from prolonged high blood sugar, which will have some of the symptoms you describe, but not all. Really, this is life threatening, you need to see a doctor. It'd be lovely to say that it sounds like a food allergy, but if you've been diagnosed with Diabetes, then it sounds like your blood sugar is too high.
Avatar m tn With blood sugars this high you are at risk for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). I strongly recommend you go to the ER / or see your doctor urgently to work out where the infection is, get it treated, and get your blood sugars under control. Please come back and let us know how you are doing.
1947749 tn?1324329389 Her pancrease is working in fits and starts. When it works she can get low blood sugar (rebound from the high) and when it eosn't work her sugars go high. Normal blood sugar in a child should be around 80. Would keep her on the high protien, high fat and low carb diet. Give her plenty of non-starchy veges though. Get her off to a pediatric endocrinologist asap. Also be careful not to overadjust for her lows. It sould take only a few grams of carbs to bring her up.
Avatar n tn I have diabetes and at the moment it is out of control. I am having a lot of high-blood sugars, if this is ketone related, should I not be losing weight, instead I seem to feeling both heavier and bloated. If you can please answer this I'd be most appreciative.
1388299 tn?1279740904 Ketones are a bit more dangerous than that. It generally indicates that you are running dangerously high blood sugars, which put you at risk for DKA. (Diabetic Ketoacidosis). You don't say what your blood sugars are. If they are 300+ you can try and bring them down by doing (careful) insulin corrections. If you aren't able to bring them down you should call your doctor. Also drink a lot of water to keep from getting dehydrated.
Avatar n tn Left untreated, diabetes causes blood sugar to go extremely high. Your blood sugar of 29 would be considered extremely low. One other thing worries me, fruits, sweets and juice do contain carbohydrates. They are what are called simple carbohydrates. In other words your body breaks them down into glucose very fast. I would talk to a doctor about this as soon as possible since this is having a negative impact on your life.
1436324 tn?1283698760 After much reading, the best thing to do is to follow a low carb diet - like Atkins or South Beach. This way you avoid raising your blood sugar and minimizing insulin release and get rid of insulin resistance. The diet is not easy to stick with for many people, though some people are fine with it. Do not start this diet (if you'd like to give it a try) without letting your doctor know, especially if you've started taking medications or insulin for your diabetes.
Avatar m tn Though it seemed to be a low sugar attack, she also had strong acetone breath that is supposed to indicate high blood sugar levels. After a harrowing several minutes, we gave her some milk and eat 2 strawberries (based on the assumption that this would only produce a mild boost to her sugar) and she recovered a bit. At the (really bad) public clinic where we then took her, they said it was a low blood sugar attack.
Avatar f tn s blood sugar is way into the danger zone, and if he is sustaining blood sugars that high he is in danger of going into DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) which is a medical emergency. However...having said that...it is normal for a person to be somewhat irritable, grouchy, short-tempered, etc. But I'm sorry to say your husband's behavior is over the line of what can be attributed to high blood sugar and indicate a problem that already exists and is exacerbated by the blood sugar.
Avatar m tn With your father's blood sugars being so high metformin alone will not control his blood sugar. He definitely needs to be taking insulin as well, and preferably using both a long acting insulin (injected 1 or 2/day) and a short acting insulin before meals to cover his food and also to make corrections, if required.
Avatar n tn t seem to be irritable or anything, i do not feel sick, since I have been eating less and not having sugar, I have been feeling really tired and down. Your blood sugar level is at such a high level that it makes sense that your feeling so bad. You need to exercise, get at the very least 10,000 steps a day, eat meals with no more than 45 carb (3 carb choices), eat 3 meals and 3 snacks a day and only 2 carb choices a snack. Drink plenty of water. I hope this helps a bit.
Avatar n tn Agitation / Irritation / Aggression / Confusion Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication in patients with untreated diabetes mellitus (chronic high blood sugar or hyperglycemia). Near complete deficiency of insulin and elevated levels of certain stress hormones combine to cause DKA.
514704 tn?1228312637 Not only are those symptoms of diabetes but you might be experiencing something called ketoacidosis brought on by very high blood sugars which can land you in the hospital. If you feel as though you have the flu, you should go to an ER. But I would just call your doctor and tell him you need to be seen very quickly and request a blood sugar test.
