Avatar f tn I have not responded to medications (Prilosec, Protonix, Pepcid, Nexium, Reglan, Baclofen, Trazodone) for GERD, hiatal hernia. It seems like some people go for many years without considering surgery and I have only been trying meds for about 5 months. The symptoms that seem most difficult to control are the cough, hoarseness, heartburn, and feeling like something is stuck in my chest. Bile reflux is also part of the problem since I had my gall bladder removed 30+ years ago. The dr.
1253246 tn?1332073310 You probably do not have acid reflux if you have hiatal hernia-even a small one. And this would be enough to cause your symptoms. It is the obstruction of the lower esophageal valve into the stomach that is causing all your problems. Just look up" hiatal hernia self massage video" and that should help you with this. For further help to eliminate the hiatal hernia you can see a Chiropractor who is familiar with this. No need for surgery or medications!
341655 tn?1240368839 Yes. The surgery for a hiatal hernia is the Nissen Fundaplication, where a portion of the fundus is wrapped around the esophagus in the area of the lower esophageal sphincter. As for the type, 90% of all hiatal hernias are sliding hernias, not paraesophageal, so it's probably a sliding hiatal hernia that you have.
Avatar f tn I went to a surgeon who specializes in repairing hiatal hernias for another opinion. He told me that he believes my GERD is caused by hiatal hernia and I should get surgery to fix it. He said the upper GI series isn’t always accurate because you’re lying down during it so the severity of hiatal hernias isn’t always detected. Is this true? Is it possible hiatal hernias can be seen on endoscopy, then not seen on upper GI series? I’m very confused.
Avatar m tn 1. What does the following written on GI upper series report means: "The pharyngo-esophageal junction, esophagus, stomach, and duodenum are normal. There is a small reducible hiatal hernia. There is no mass or ulcer present. Esophageal mobility was mormal. No gastroesophageal reflux was see. IMPRESSION: SMALL, SLIDING TYPE HIATAL HERNIA." 2. Is a above small reducible hiatal hernia a congential (person had it since birth)condition? 3.
1666825 tn?1303252659 who has a sliding hiatal hernia with heart arrhythmias and shortness of breath??? I have this health problems for more than a year now - and they find out last week that I have a small hiatal hernia. I always have pain on my chest and back after or during eating. Getting a higher heart rate and palpitations. I lost power by doing sport - shortness of breath. Who can help???
Avatar m tn Yesterday I had an endoscopy done. They found that I have a large hiatal hernia. My follow up appointment isn't for 5 months. What I'm wondering is if they will recommend surgery to correct this?
Avatar n tn I had pretty bad reflux but more worrisome is the Irregular heartbeats. Cardio DR says there benign so now I'm wondering if the whole acid reflux/hiatal hernia is putting pressure on my heart or vagus nerve thus causing the palpitations. Is it worth going to a gastro Dr for further testing about this theory?
Avatar f tn A large retrocardiac hiatal hernia is seen with the gastric fundus and at least half of the gastric body projecting above the diaphragm, protruding through the esophageal hiatus. I am scheduled for a capsule endoscopy in about 3 weeks. I suffer occassional heartburn but Dr has put we on Prilocsec which I have had no problems with since. My question is... with a hiatal hernia this large, are they going to end up doing surgery??? I am a 48 year old female, 168 pounds and 5'3"....
Avatar n tn Is it possible that a moderate sized hiatal hernia can cause breathing difficulties? Could it press on the diaphragm and cause me to have wheezing difficulties? I have a scheduled appointment with a surgeon to see if surgery would be of benefit to me.
Avatar f tn s the test that determined that I have a small hiatal hernia. I was told that normally the hiatal hernia isn't the culprit for the symptoms. Usually GERD is a problem with the LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter) being too loose (and for some people the acid has erroded the LES completely). I was told that most people have a tiny one like mine is and that this isn't typically the reason for the GERD.
Avatar f tn I now have a 5.1 cm hiatal hernia, and my GERD is just as severe as prior to my surgery. I have been on 60 mgs of Nexium in the morning and 40 mgs of Zantac in the evening for three years. My Physician's Assistant has chosen to use 40 mgs of Priolosec for the hernia.
Avatar f tn I have a large hiatal hernia. When I have had a chest x-ray, radiologists have commented on the size. I also have trouble catching my breath when climbing stairs. I also have some bouts of bradycardia. One of the radiologists commented he didn't know how I could take a deep breath with half of my stomach in my chest. My question is: Can a hiatal hernia interfere with breathing? Thank you.
Avatar f tn Surgery is complex and long, but it can be rectified. It is clear that IF hiatal hernia is a cause and requires surgery, you need a specialist surgeon. Many times after a surgeon fixes the problem who isn't experienced much in that field, it fails.
Avatar f tn So anyway, we saw another doctor and this one did an upper GI endoscopy on me and discovered I had a sliding hiatal hernia. He prescribed Protoprazole and another brand of Domperidone. For some time they worked, but eventually, for some reason, the symptoms got worse again, and I complained to the doctor about it so he performed a barium swallow test on me. Surprisingly, the test proved unremarkable - the hernia didn't show up.
Avatar n tn Does this mean surgery failed? is hernia back (now they are referring to this as a paraesophageal hernia) The doctors never told us herina might be back so I am wondering when I see x-ray report and it shos Pre-demonstartion of hernia, does that mean there is a new issue or they are seeing repaired hernia? is it typical that Nissen wrap would slip so soon after surgery?
Avatar f tn You should have had a upper GI Barium Swallow to see if there is a hiatal hernia. However, I had this and it showed not hernia. When I had surgery for the funoplication wrap for my valve they discovered a hiatal hernia so bad that my valve and stomach were in my upper chest cavity. With a hiatal hernia it can cause breathing problems so bad that I got panic attacks with them. Also, it might be your asphogus is raw.
Avatar f tn I am having surgery to repair a Hiatal Hernia. Has anyone had this done recently? What can I expect? Is it in and out surgery, how long were you out of work, what could you eat, etc.?
Avatar n tn i have a hiatal hernia. i've had many test ran and they all come back saying i have a hiatal hernia and gerd. only this time i had a motility study done and there were some motility issues. they did another barium study and they saw only the hiatal hernia. i have stomach pain everyday and can not seem to find relief.
