Hernia surgery swelling

Common Questions and Answers about Hernia surgery swelling

I am sorry to hear you have a hernia but at least you finally have answers to the pain you've been experiencing. I have not had a hernia (or don't think that is the cause of my occasional twinges of pain/discomfort) so cannot answer any questions about surgery. Hope all goes well!
i recently had hernia surgery.. before i went in my penis shaft was fine..when i came out i had swelling on my shaft by my head. as a few days went by it turned into a scab and is now healing. is this something that could be from a std...like i said everything before surgery was competely fine never had any problems..only came up right after surgery the spot was swollen and then turned into a scab.never was a blister or anything like that.
In September, I underwent umbilical hernia repair surgery. In the recovery room, during extubation, my airway collapsed and I spent 24 hours in ICU. Approximately three months later, my left hand and arm swelled enormously. A trip to the ER and IV steriods, antibiotics and Zantac started bringing the swelling down (hand and arm returned to normal after a day or so). Two weeks later, I was taken to ER (by ambulance) when my airway swelled shut.
I had hernia repair surgery with mesh about 6wks ago. I have one 5in long incision at my belly button,4 about 1in long incisions, 4 about 1/2in spots (these little spots did not have stitches or staples) and 1 area where the drain was at. I am an overweight person who has a large belly and I am 40yr female. I feel good except a burning sometimes very painful spot in my abdomen it is between the large incision and where the drain was right about where my hernia was.

Hi, Pain in the scrotum following an inguinal hernia repair may persist anywhere between 3 months to 1 year after the surgery. Swelling in the scrotum following surgery should resolve within a few weeks, but if it persists, you need further medical attention. Pain in the scrotum following an inguinal hernia repair can be alleviated by wearing close-fitting underwear (do not wear shorts) and avoiding physical exertion that strains the abdominal muscles.
When my husband had his hernia surgery, it was an outpatient surgery even though the hernia was pretty big. Your case might be different since you've had multiple surgeries already. Yes, it is necessary for you to have it removed, as it may rupture inside you and it's very risky. I'm glad you're having it taken care of. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask your doctor all the questions you need answered. Good luck!
In your case, if you see a swelling, I am suspecting it most probably to be an incisional hernia, where the abdominal contents protrude through an opening in the incision. But if you don't see a swelling then the pain may be due to scar tissue that forms post surgery. But when in doubt best to have it checked. Please consult your primary care physician for further evaluation. Regards.
I have a hiatus hernia which has moved and along with part of stomach has moved up into my chest and is pressing against my heart. Is this quite a common side effect and what is the normal treatment. ie an operation ?
I think that the kind of hernia surgery you are looking at it is a relatively simple surgery, as far as surgery goes. I don't think the dog will have to be put under deep anaesthesia, the procedure is something that is done close to the surface, and it is a fairly quick operation. I would expect a healthy dog to recover well. Your boy might have some activity restrictions while he is recovering, to keep him from pulling the stitches loose and undoing the procedure.
The fact that you mention the cough test for a physical was OK gives me the indication that you have not had your doctor mention a hernia to you. I had lived with intermittant swelling (lump) in the right inguinal region. Unlike you I had eperienced some discomfort at times while lifting things at work. I used to be a heavy duty mechanic shop foreman. Having had many medical examinations for other problems the possibility of a hernia was never brought out by either my doctor or myself.
Hello, Redness, swelling and inflammation at the site of stitches of surgery means an infection of the area. First of all get this checked from your surgeon and you may need a course of topical and oral antibiotics. If there is any fluid or pus collection inside the scrotal sacs then it may need to be drained. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
After I had open inguinal hernia surgery the left side under the incision became numb and is still part numb after two weeks. But the left testicle has become enlarged has not gone down. Could their be something gonig on other than post op swelling?

The pain could be due to the inflammation post surgery. As the swelling resolves, your pain should decrease. One testicle being lower than the other is a common occurrence. However, if the pain persists or if there is discharge, please consult your doctor. In the meantime you can take OTC Iburpofen pain medication. Ensure to take this medication after food to avoid gastritis. Apply cold compress to the wound for relief. Take Care! Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Almost four months after surgery, I am still experiencing massive swelling and excruiating pain with inflammation. I was having a great recovery for the first ten days, then BAM! My leg, knee and ankle swelled to gigantic proportions. My doctor has said only that I have arthritis in my knee and I have to be patient. On at least three occasions, I have been in tears in his office and asking what to do about it. He still tells me be patient. This is surely not normal.
Dear goliath415 , Thanks for writing in. I have reviewed your family history and your yearly PSA (Prostatic Specific Antigen) values. A hernia surgery by itself shall not lead to increase in PSA. However, if you had bothersome urinary symptoms or catheterisation during surgery, it can certainly lead to increased PSA values. You have had a fairly good PSA record and I shall advise yourself to get investigated with urinalysis.
Also, the fibrosis after surgery can cause the discomfort. But if there is a swelling or a bulge, you need to consult your doctor to rule out an infection or a recurrence or hernia. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
I had same thing,I found a surgical supply house that have hernia support belts and a pad to hold in hernia. Is abdomen swelling? It will require surgery to fix.
No exercise will repair a hernia! only surgery can!
The best thing is to get yourself examined and rule out hernia; if there is a hernia then you have to plan an elective surgery. Take care!
I had hernia surgery 3 weeks ago in my abdomen and now I am experiencing pain and swelling to the right of the incision. There is so much pressure there and the area is rock hard. I called my surgeons office and they said it might be a fluid build up and to try a heating pad. The heating pad worked to reduce the swelling and pressure for the next two days, but does not seem to be working anymore.
My husband had the surgery after our first successful IVF cycle (it worked the first time and we thought we would have no problems on #2). Now, we are trying for #2 and have been told that it might not be possible due to a potential blockage from the hernia repair. If we had frozen sperm, we might still have been able to do IVF. Ask the question of the dr. and, just to be safe, see if you can freeze sperm before the surgery. You never know what the results of a surgery will be, I guess....
It does not hurt but the area was not swollen before the staples came out. The slight oozing/bleeding I had before seems to have stopped. Did others notice any swelling after the staples came out? It may be nothing but the healing process but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
hello, i'm a 19 year old female. i had appendectomy 6 yrs ago. the surgery went ok. but about a year back i strained myself in a bout of constipation, and since then i have had pain in the scar region. i went to a doctor and he told me that there is a slight swelling in the scar region but it's not full-fleged hernia yet. so my question is - can i be cured by some special exercises for this purpose? can someone please tell me the exercises that i can do for it?
