Can you take a laxative to relief constipation if you have a large abdominal hernia waiting for surgery?
I had my gallbladder removed ten days ago. Also had hernia repair at the same time. I was on an all liquid diet for the first 5 days. I have been on "regular food" for about 5 days now. I am very constipated. Having very small or no bowel movement. Strangely enough I have not had any pain or bloating. Could this be because I have not been eatting very much or is it a sign that something is wrong?
Treatment involves reducing weight, avoiding constipation, avoiding strenuous work and lifting weight. Hernia is repaired by surgery. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral.

Thank you for the information about possible surgery, yes I also have a hiatus hernia buy surgery wasn't mentioned at all, just repeat upper endoscopy every year.
They did find Barretts but biopsy didn't show malignancy (knock on wood) but have to take PPI's for rest of my life.
I have several other risks for surgery, one of the worst is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, not sure if this eliminates me from ANY surgery in the future, except (knocking wood) an emergency.
I have sharp abdominal pain to the right of my abdomen about 3 fingers width. It has been there for months and I mainly feel it upon touch. Lately I've felt bloated. I saw an obgyn and ovaries and uterus have been ruled out. My pcp wants to send me for a CT scan of the abdomen. Is she thinkining hiatal hernia possibly caught early?? I am thin, don't always eat the best, not pregnant (my son is 8) . She says its in the area of the ileocecal valve.
Is it possible that this is shingles? My doctor says I have a hernia, but he only asked me some questions and poked at me a little. He ignored the rash.
My operation for the hernia is scheduled for next week, but I don't want to get cut open if it's not really a hernia.
For an operation to be successful the cause of hernia has to be eliminated—abdominal muscle stress as in lifting heavy weights, constipation, cough, muscle weakness etc. It is advisable to first eliminate the cause and then go for surgery.

I am severely dry from my head to my toes, literally. Drs. have told me that I probably have sjogren's syndrome, One of my biggest problems is chronic constipation. I drink plenty of water. I have had the chronic constipation since I was a child. I eat a lot of fiber. I also was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia last fall and my acid reflux can get so bad that I can't eat anything without feeling like I could breath fire. I lost weight last time it go so bad.
On 4/16/11 had inguinal hernia surgery after about a month felt incomplete evacuation . Went to gastro had mamomatry test and defagram they said might be pelvic floor dysplasia . Went through biofeed back and miralax daily. Things got worse have to strain for bm and no relief in gut when I do constant bloating can't sit so painful did enemas and couldn't pass it all out made matters worse.
I had hernia surgery 7 1/2 wks ago cannot believe the pain i have had. It was a spagelian hernia and I am a female. After surgery my incision & other private parts swelled up the size of a cantelope and turned black & blue , so pain full couldn't walk. bruising and swollen from upper thighs to belly button and around both sides. Said it's a hematoma. Used mesh but that's all I really know.
An incisional hernia can occur years after a surgery, including a laparoscopic procedure. I have a hernia which has developed at the site where I had a procedure some time ago. The weakness in the abdominal wall is created by the incision, even a perfectly healed one. Then the wall is strained through excercise, heavy lifting and even weight gain causing the weaker portion of the abdominal wall to tear (herniate).
He thinks that my abdomen pain is either a muscle spaz, torn abdomen wall, possible hernia, possible air trapped after surgery- he’s testing my liver and pancreas as I have a history there but he is entirely clueless and I explained to him my pain but he kept saying it couldn’t be internal or to do with the surgeries.
t know if the testicular pain is coming from my back herniated disc or from the hernia. My nerologist thinks it is the hernia,although my GP thinks it os the back injury.I am scheduled to have the hernia repaired,hopin it might cure the testicular pain.Any thoughts?I am also constipated these days although do't know if there is any connection.
My mother died due to a bowel nick during hernia surgery. It's a rapid decline and symptoms are grim. Severe pain that puts you in the fetal position. Usually, if caught, sepsis (the issue of a nicked bowel) is treatable and responds well to treatment. My mom was alone and didn't seek help in a timely manner. Onset is quick--- surgery on Wednesday, ill by Friday, in ER by Saturday, diagnosed with sepsis and operated on, dead Monday.
I have several fun stomach issues, including GERD, a hiatal hernia, and now gastroparesis. I seem to always have heartburn, despite being on medication for almost 9 years. My esophagus is not "abnormal enough" to repair my hiatal hernia. There does not seem to be much available for my gastroparesis, since Reglan made me sick, Amitiza is not covered by my insurance, and I have no idea if Novardis will accept me to go on Zelnorm.

I have had my gall bladder removed, part of my small bowel removed (due to endometriosis), mesh put in my abdomen from a hernia and a hysterectomy. My last surgery was approx 3 years ago. Since then, I have had loose yellow bowel movements, chronic pain in my abdomen, shoulders, knees, feet and hands. Cymbalta helped but caused constipation. With that being said and the research I have done, my question is:

In 2006, I underwent emergency surgery to have an incarcerated right inguinal hernia repaired. Prior to that I lost my left testicle due to a severe strep infection. Before I went in for the hernia surgery, I was told that ther may be a risk of loosing the remaining right testicle. I refused to sign the conscent form and was pleased to wake up from surgery with my right testicle intact. One problem that I do have now, is that the right testicle seems to fixed high in the scrotum.

It is now January 2014 and I too have had terrible bouts of constipation ever since the surgery. These bouts at first were spread by weeks .. Now it is every week. The bulge is huge on the right side as that is where the donor ab muscle was harvested. My left breast was compromised as I had breast cancer in 2007 and had radiotherapy. Then in May 2012 after many biopsies found the cancer had returned to the same breast ..
