Hemoglobin a1c vs glucose

Common Questions and Answers about Hemoglobin a1c vs glucose

glucose

Avatar f tn Here is how the the ADAG [American Diabetes Association Guideline] formula to convert ones A1c to eAG [estimated Average Glucose], or what your daily average glucose has been for the past 3 months. 28.7 X A1c – 46.7 = eAG An example of this is an A1c of 6%. The calculation for this would be: 28.7 X 6 – 46.7 = 126 mg/dl for an estimated average glucose of 126 mg/dl. As you will see, 126 mg/dl is the beginning point of t2 diabetes.
Avatar f tn The A1C test goes by many other names, including glycated hemoglobin, glycosylated hemoglobin, hemoglobin A1C and HbA1c. The A1C test result reflects your average blood sugar level for the past two to three months. Specifically, the A1C test measures what percentage of your hemoglobin — a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen — is coated with sugar (glycated). The higher your A1C level, the poorer your blood sugar control and the higher your risk of diabetes complications.
Avatar m tn "I wonder if A1c tests can skew, where periodic high blood sugar levels eclipse relatively normal control over a span of time. imagine a rug which has been clean for a while, but a cup of wine recently dropped will make it appear stained. Is this parallel apt for A1c results?" You're mixing fasting glucose or an OGTT test with an A1c. Fasting and/or an OGTT captures your glucose at the time of the test, not what is was 3 hours prior, the day or week before.
Avatar f tn I'm not an expert by any means, but I wouldn't think that one daily rise would have that much affect on your A1c. Have you been diagnosed with diabetes? I'm asking because I recently had an A1C with result of 5.6 and although it IS in the normal range, it's high normal, but my doctor blew the whole thing off as being totally insignifcant.
Avatar n tn Should person exercise at lower intensity(even though he can exercise at higher intensity) for prevention of developing diabetes in the future? Is there equation of calculating normal average glucose from hemoglobin a1c test?
446049 tn?1649005835 This is the formula used by many to convert A1c to daily mg/dl. It is called the eAG [Estimated Average Glucose], and what many feel should be the patients goal. The ADAG [A1C-Derived Average Glucose] formula that is used to calculate the eAG from your A1c result is: 28.7 X A1c – 46.7 = eAG An example of this is an A1c of 6%. The calculation for this would be: 28.7 X 6 – 46.7 = 126 mg/dl for an estimated average glucose of 126 mg/dl.
Avatar n tn I am 56 and just signed up for more life insurance. My hemoglobin A1c was 6.7 and fructosamine was 2.00. This was over the holidays but I need to get serious about my health. I jog every weekday for 2 miles. I am using a lot of SlimFast to lose weight. I need to lose about 30 pounds. What can I do to lower these numbers naturally? My glucose was 83. Am I getting close to Diabetes Adult Type II?
Avatar n tn My HDLC is 38 mg/dL What does this mean? My Hemoglobin A1c is 6.2 % What does this mean?
Avatar n tn Perhaps the best test for you would be to find out what your hemoglobin a1c test number is. This is a lab test done on glucose that shows what your AVERAGE glucose level was for the past 3 months. If that number is in the normal range, you probably have little to be concerned about. If you have not had a hemoglobin a1c test done, you may want to ask your doctor about doing it.
Avatar n tn The A1C is merely an average of the blood sugars over a period of time of 2-3 months. Your A1C definitely doesn't reflect the range you describe of 89 to 130. Sometimes it seems as though it isn't accounted for exactly, by the daily numbers but yours is pretty far off. Could it be that the period of time included a time before you got your blood sugars into range to account for the higher average?
Avatar m tn You should ask for an A1c [hemoglobin A1c] test which measures your glucose over the past 3 months. Red blood cells live an average of 3 months. Normally excess glucose binds to new red blood cells and the A1c captures this. Your results are presented in % [percentile]. To find out your daily average glucose use this formula. 28.7 X A1c – 46.
956931 tn?1271636169 The A1c test is a ‘glycated (or glycosylated) hemoglobin’ test. It measures the amount of glucose that adheres to red blood cell over the lifetime of the cell; about 90-120 days on average. The results *approximate* blood sugar results; a table that compares finger-stick tests and A1c results can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.
Avatar f tn As part of the blood tests I had it show hemoglobin as part of my CBC which was in normal range. Do you know if this is the same as an A1c test?
Avatar m tn All was well last year but today the fasting lab results showed elevated Hemoglobin Levels of 10. I now have diabetes consult scheduled and am monitoring my blood sugar levels (non-fasting blood sugar was 106 at the doctor’s office and 96 before supper). I just spent 6 months living at 8,000 feet above sea level and fasted for 14 hours having drunk little water during this fast. Can these results be skewed because of 6 months at 8,000’ elevation and lack of water?? Thank you in advance.
Avatar n tn The value of your A1c is the amount of glucose that is attached to that hemoglobin. The higher your average blood sugars, the higher your A1c value. The better control you have, the lower your A1c will be. Please let us know if you have any more questions! Good luck!
Avatar m tn I am 30 years old and over 165 pounds and My hemoglobin A1C is 8.1 % and My Glucose content is 161 after food.So i Consult with my doctor and they advised me to take Glucophage 500mg tablet twice in a day.My BP is 117/83. Please advice me to follow my Sugar content in Blood.
632011 tn?1234347109 For instance, an A1c of 6% corresponds to an average glucose of 135 mg/dL (7.5 mmol/L), while an A1c of 9% corresponds to an average glucose of 240 mg/dL (13.5 mmol/L). The closer a diabetic can keep their A1c to 6%, the better their diabetes is in control. As the A1c increases, so does the risk of complications.
Tbd This is accomplished by measuring the amount of glucose attached to the oxygen carrying protein hemoglobin carried by red blood cells which typically have a lifespan of 90 days. The practitioner will likely recommend lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise.
Avatar f tn "I've also read that fasting glucose is not the most accurate of diabetes tests." A fasting glucose test [FPG], an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test [OGTT], and an random plasma glucose test [RPG] measures you glucose level at the time of the test. All three provide the doctor an insight on your glucose levels. They don't lie, only humans do. An A1c [hemoglobin A1c], on the other hand, looks back three months. The results are given in % [percentile].
Avatar m tn t effect the A1C. The A1C measures your average over the past 3 months. It is sometimes possible to slow progression or reverse prediabetes altogether. The key is exercise, and a balanced low calorie diet. A good aerobic exercise that gets the heartrate up is best. 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. You don't have to cut out all carbs. You can still include complex carbs like nuts, legumes, beans, oats(steel cut are best). Have a look at the Glycemic Index Charts. The lower the better.
5864651 tn?1396931970 I Don't know about over there, but here in th US I requested the A1C blood draw test instead of the glucose test. That way I didn't have to drink for 3 hours. I hope that helps.
Avatar f tn You may consider it bickering or whatever you wish to call it. I don't feel this discussion belongs behind closed doors and should be informative to readers on what's new and correct in determining their glucose test levels. Although the A1C test is an important tool, it can't replace daily self-testing of blood glucose. A1C tests don't measure your day-to-day control. Estimated Average Glucose (eAG) is a new way to understand how well you're managing your diabetes.
