82861 tn?1333453911 Let that death serve a purpose and keep your dogs cool and hydrated. Heat stroke can strike very quickly and with no real warning unless you know what to look for. If the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory, heat watch or heat warning, treat your pets the same way you would treat yourself and stay inside with the air conditioner. Limit outdoor time and keep activity to a minimum, particularly in the afternoon hours. Be cool!
436837 tn?1293793226 You do right to limit the time laying in the sun. Dogs can easily get heat stroke and heat exhaustion and dehydration. Basking in the sun when it gets TOO hot is not a very good idea. I've caught my dog doing it sometimes....but most of the time she knows when she's had enough and moves automatically to the shade. A question. Just a thought. Does your dog stick close by you when you're outside? Mine is inclined to. If I am in the sun she'll come and sit or lay near me.
Avatar f tn Dogs can get heat exhaustion and heat stroke just like people, and heat stroke can be fatal without immediate medical support. It's so easy to forget proper hydration and cooling during the beginning of the summer months. I'm guilty of that myself. Living in a sub-tropical region and being sensitive to heat, I have to force water and Gatorade down my throat regularly if I'm outside.
Avatar f tn Boxers are more susceptible to heat stroke due to their smaller airways ("pushed-back" faces, like bull-dogs & pugs have also). Unfortunately, we continue to hear stories such as this during the summer months. I'm truly sorry for your loss. *** BEYOND THE RAINBOW Author Unknown As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played, I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade.
Avatar n tn Heat exhaustion can quickly go to full-blown heat stroke which can be fatal if not treated. Hosing her down with the water hose in the heat of the day or after a walk will help. I recall my boss from several years ago who had an Italian Greyhound who nearly died of heat stroke here in Texas. They had adopted the dog in winter, and one fine day in the middle of May when temps suddenly jumped to the low 90's, they looked out the window and saw the dog just laid out in the yard.
Avatar n tn Many owners confuse the symptoms of a stroke in humans to a stroke in dogs. In fact, they are quite different.
927213 tn?1270011366 dry gums as the heat prostration progresses, weakness, confusion or inattention, vomiting or diarrhea and sometimes bleeding. As the condition progresses towards heat prostration or heat stroke there may be obvious paleness or graying to the gums.] If those early signs were absent, then I would be more inclined to think it could be spinal trouble, or possibly something else. Many things can cause a dog to go 'off its legs'. Sometimes kidney complaints can do this. Has she been spayed?
765802 tn?1263300851 It takes about 30 days for the body to return to normal with regard to the blood vessels around the uterus not being engorged with blood with the plans to facilitate a pregnancy, and you want those vessels to go down so that there's not an increased chance of bleeding during the surgery. It makes the surgery a lot less risky.
725621 tn?1314843247 She is feeling just fine, however it would be much healthier for her in general if you were to have her spayed as soon as she is over her heat cycle is over and her body returns to normal. Dogs come into season twice a year, and it takes about a month for all the blood vessels in and around the uterus to return to their normal size after the cycle ends.
Avatar n tn I have heard that once a person has had a heat stroke, they can not tolerate the heat anymore. It seems to do something to our body's chemistry. I have not had a heat stroke, but, I am extremely heat intolerant. I am always hot, and I must be in the A/C or I get short of breath, PVC's and feel horrible. I am even hot in the winter. One thing besides heat stroke that can cause heat intolerance is an over-active thyroid and also a lack of natural progesterone.
Avatar m tn s not the risk of the seizure itself, but rather when a dog convulses their body temp rises and the longer the seizure or the closer together they are, the greater the risk that the dog will essentially experience heat stroke. In extreme casses (long seizures or clusters with close proximity) organs can fail/be damaged and this is the danger. In her case their was no "cause". Essentially they consider her to have primary epilepsy.
Avatar m tn s actually someone like a real stroke but heat stroke or heat exhaustion affects the brain in a different way and the ongoing symptoms are related to the body's reaction to heat or sun. Not everyone experiences ongoing sensitivity, and yours may ease off. But in my case, it was permanent. I remember those two incidents very well to this day, man I was sick (unbelievable). So in a way I am not surprised.
Avatar f tn A year ago I believe I suffered some heat exhaustion/stroke and since then, when i start getting hot during activities, i get chills up and down my spine, arms and legs. My calf muscle on my left side will tingle/becomes numb, i get dizzy , my face gets red, i can feel my heart pounding in my head and my breathing is rapid but shallow and i have trouble regulating it for a few minutes. It scares me.
Avatar n tn Well I think you are right. Spaying a female before her first heat gives almost total guaranteed protection against breast cancer (and obviously uterine cancer, and other dangerous things like Pyometra) But spaying her after her first Heat will help with healthy bone development, particularly of the long bones. It does seem that there is still a great deal of protection against female cancers, even if spayed after the first Heat.
Avatar n tn This disease normally affects dogs that seem normal up until the signs appear. Then there is sudden loss of balance with many dogs unable to even stand up. Rythmic eye motion known as nystagmus is usually present. Dogs may be nauseous from the "sea sickness" effect of vestibular disease. Most dogs will not eat or drink unless hand fed or given water by hand because they have a hard time with the fine motor movements necessary to eat or drink from a bowl.
Avatar m tn diagnosed stroke 2/08/2010 hospitalized for 8 days, diabetes and high blood pressure found at this time. being treated. numbness as call it is left side arm, leg. face , i have complete use of all these, just the numbness. is there anything that i can do to get this seemingly back to normal or close to .
675347 tn?1365460645 ) locked 2 German Shepherds in the police van, and when they came back the dogs were dead from heat stroke. Strangely, following this news item was a TV programme about the RSPCA (Animal welfare) where the officers found a dog dead in a car. The owners were at a Country event, where dogs were not allowed, and had left their dog in the car in 85 degree temperatures and baking sunshine. A few points to remember... It is ALWAYS far, far hotter inside a car than it is outside.
Avatar m tn was treated in hospital for stroke, found h b pressyre, sugar, high clos. didnt know any of this. am home only since saturday, had to move south ,no one to help in new jersey. question remains why the numbness in left side, or seeminglyASLEEP. I CAN FEEL TOUCH, JUST A SLEEP. SEEMS TO GET WORSE WITH EXCERSIZE OR MUCH USE. WAS TOLD POSSIBLE SENSORY OR FEEL;INGS COMING BACK. WOULD IT FEEL THIS WAY OR SHOULD I HAVE CONCERN RIGHT NOW, THANK YOU FOR ANY FEEDBACK AND HELP WITH THIS.
Avatar f tn I'm so sorry, but sadly this happens more often than not. People become so close to their pets, they forget they are not people. Dogs require good diet, not table scraps and food people eat. We all made this mistake. When you think you are doing good for your dog, you find out later you made big mistake. There could be a dozen reasons you dog passed-on, but hard lesson learned. Dogs are smart and my dog Jack had sickness from about the first day we saved him.
