Common Questions and Answers about Heartburn and esophageal cancer

heartburn

1384238 tn?1286028762 Sounds like your GERD and/or your Hiatal Hernia are/is worsening. This could be Esophagitis or an Esophageal tear as well. If you think you need Emergent care prior to your scheduled appointment then do so. This definitely needs to be sorted out ASAP. I would recommend you have an Upper GI Endoscopy done along with labs and an occult stool test.
Avatar m tn I am a non smoker, not overweight, not diabetic and have no chronic history of heartburn, but in the past, I have been unable to take large doses (800mg) of ibuprofen without having strong reflux problems at night time. Other than that, reflux was infrequent and sporadic. However, I do like my coffee as well as my spicy and fatty foods. About four weeks ago, I started having mild heartburn symptoms at night, that were generally relieved by Zantac.
Avatar m tn With your family history and the fact that you are having symptoms, you should get an endoscope which will show how you are doing. GERD is not cancer, but untreated it can lead to Barrett's esophagus which can then lead to esophageal cancer. The endoscope is the best way to check as symptoms alone can't tell you anything definitive.
Avatar f tn I'm really interested in finding this out because I'm allowed to take Pepcid with my heart problems & pacemaker/icd; but not allowed to take Zantac, Prilosec, or Prevacid etc...
Avatar m tn The possible link between bile and acid reflux and esophageal cancer remains controversial, but many experts think a direct connection exists. In animal studies, bile reflux alone has been shown to cause cancer of the esophagus.
Avatar m tn last week I had the endoscopy done and they took samples (biopsies) and the results came back positive for cancer of the esophagus. 2 days ago I had to go in and have a CT Scan done and they are awaiting for those results to see if it has spread any where else in my body. I have a feeling once the results are in, probably early next week, I'll be called in for surgery within a week maybe 2. Since I received this bad news, I've been reflecting as to why me?, why do I have cancer.
Avatar f tn When the stomach does not have enough acid, the LES remains open and acid can spill into the esophageal region and damage the tissue.
Avatar f tn I went to the ER in the middle of the night on Friday. They officially diagnosed me with GERD. They took blood, ran an ekg, and took xrays. They said that everything was normal. They put me on 40 mg of Pepcid AC for two weeks. I am still having abdominal pain and mild chest pain. If it doesn't go away, I will have to have an endoscopy to check for cancer. I am so terrified of that prospect! :( I've had GERD most of my adult years, and recently developed heartburn with it.
Avatar n tn For the past several days I have had to urinate often, felt a strange airy/burning sensation in my chest, heartburn, belching, and frequent gas pains and bubbly feeling in my abdomen. Also, it seems at night that I wake up suddenly with a jerk and/or gasping for air. Today I developed a shooting pain in the front of my neck and a shooting pain in my right lower pelvic area. I have a history of asthma, axiety attacks, and GERD. Could it just be this or does it sound more serious?
Avatar m tn Hi Worried, I had the same problems...difficulty swallowing, feeling an obstruction in my throat (like a bubble or something), phlegm and even problems breathing when the acid gets up in my throat. After an endoscopy, they discovered that I have esophagitis (which makes it hard to swallow), esophageal spasms (acid is causing my esophagus to spasm), Barrett's Esophagus (from years of the acid being in my throat and burning it) and a hiatal hernia.
Avatar f tn I have the very same question that you do. I have been diagnosed with acid reflux (no heartburn), esophageal spasms and hypersensitive esophagus. I am currently taking prilosec twice a day and a calcium channel blocker at night for some relief of the spasms. The sensitivity seems to be getting better (I assume because the acid reflux is under control) and is limited to certain foods now. This all started abruptly - along with my first tingling symptoms in July of 2007.
Avatar m tn is it true if left untreated u can get some sort of cancer? i do not get heartburn just bad mucus buid up in me mouth and a itch at the back of the throat.thanks alot for the help and advice you are providing selmas.
1969859 tn?1325813286 H pylori is a kind of bacteria. It's known for causing stomach ulcers and may make a person more likely to get have stomach cancer (I've read mixed things on it). The stomach ulcers are extremely painful and cause indigestion, which could lead to heart burn. I'm unsure about any other kinds chest pains H pylori can give you, but heart burn can be mistaken for chest pains. Maybe someone was meaning heart burn or confused the two.
Avatar f tn MRI scan x-ray scan endoscopy gastric emptying scan esophageal manometry small bowel manometry and also a CT scan thats about it..they couldnt find anything wrong with me....
Avatar m tn You also used to have a habit that is known to dull (burn) the nerves, cause damage to your throat, and cause heartburn, and now that your throat is healing, you feel the heartburn. The acid went all the way up to your tongue and caused all the thick mucus, raw feeling surfaces. This may indicate a condition known as LPRD (related to GERD). Recommendation: stop eating peppermints. In fact, try following a GERD diet now that you've stopped smoking. Your body will need time to heal.
Avatar n tn It came on really quickly and the doctor has me on Prilosec and antacids after meals and at bedtime, and she just added viscous lidocaine solution to numb the esophagus. I'm eating a low acidic diet and combining my foods properly. Has anyone out there had this terrible thing and if so, any other suggestions?
Avatar f tn Does it sound like any symptoms for esophageal cancer? I have been through alot and have a tolerance for pain and for once in a long time i am in a lot of pain. Can anyone please tell me if these or signs of esophageal cancer. I would ask my parents to take me to my doctor but after everything they have been through with my health i rather not bring it up yet.
Avatar f tn Other important and rare condition to be ruled out is cystic fibrosis wherein there is presence of thick saliva and respiratory secretions. Even rare disorder like Sjogren's syndrome is associated with dryness of mouth and thick saliva. The other common possibilities are gastro esophageal reflex disease, hyperplastic tonsil, abnormal upper esophageal sphincter function, stress or psychological abnormality causes this sensation due to altered upper esophageal pressure.
Avatar f tn Hi , I had hiatus hernia and suffered badly with it ...i was on the omoprazole and all the other medications but !!!! there is one sure way of making the symptoms ease quite a lot ..I spent nearly 2 years living off plain chicken breasts and pita bread and shredded wheat ..also only drinking squash ...nothing fizzy and do not fill your stomach up ....
Avatar m tn Yes H-Pylori can cause bad chest pain, the pain is coming from the esophigus, which is just to the left of the center of your chest, if you are certain you have H-Pylori, the pain is caused by excess stomach acid, you need to get treated as H-Pylori is a nasty bacteria, it lays dorment in most people and is held in check by your stomachs good bacteria, although when you take an Anti-biotic treatment for an infection, it kills off the good bacteria and H-Pylori takes over and if left untrated fo
401095 tn?1351391770 Before DX, I just belched, hiccuped and coughed a lot, experienced chest pain and had a hoarse throat, I rarely had a true heart burn. I had pneumonia or bronchitis and sinusitis often. I had an astute PCP that referred me first to an excellent allergist that referred me to ENT's (sinus surgery) and finally a gastroenterologist. All of it was related to this severe GERD. Shortly after this I developed esophageal spasms (also related to the GERD), talk about chest pain!
