Common Questions and Answers about Heart problems in king charles cavaliers

heart

Avatar n tn My father is looking to buy a puppy that is a beagle and king Charles cavalier mix. I'm aware that up to 50% of cavaliers have a disease called syringomyelia where their heads are too small for their brains. This is apparently a painful and debilitating disease. I also know that cavaliers are also prone to valve problems and heart murmers. My father wanted to buy a mutt to try and decrease the likelihood of buying an animal that would suffer from genetic diseases.
1388357 tn?1280189493 Yeah I know about the King Cavaliers....when I first started to look up chiari I found info on dogs and horses...not people....so I knew more about them , then myself...lol... It is sad in a funny way that a vet might be the better Dr for us to talk to.
Avatar f tn Hi- we have a almost 6 month old King Charles Cavelier Spaniel that went in today to be neutered. The vet called me and told me her platelets were low at around 100,000. she said that was on the manual count and on the regular CBC it was lower 60,000-80,000. she would not do surgery on her and stated they had to be at least 200,000.
620048 tn?1358018235 Hello, I am so fortunate to have found her. We had talked about getting a rescue a couple days after my little Molly died. A day or two after that I had a talk with God, which I do quite often, and told him II needed some help here and wanted Him to look out for me. I had always wanted a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel but I also wanted a rescue dog. I would not pay that kind of money on another dog..nor could I pay it.
Avatar n tn Yes, a cavachon is a mix between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and a Brichon Frise, and may I say............. adorable.
Avatar f tn i have just noticed that two of my 8 year old king charles teats are weeping a yellow discharge like fluid, she has never had any problems with her teats before. she is not pregnant, she has never had a litter and has not been spaded. can some one please assist me as to the cause.
Avatar n tn I have actually considered a heart murmur because it is becoming increasingly common in her breed, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Some statistics say that as many as 46% of Cavaliers have some form of the heart murmur because breeders are failing to screen the parents before breeding them.....The vet has checked for it, but you just never know.....We'll keep our fingers crossed that it's nothing like that!
1624744 tn?1299240923 Last Wednesday we took our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to be neutered. Everything went as planned. That night he was in more pain than what other dogs I've had was. He cried on and off all night. From then he has steadily gotten worse. Then Tues he stopped eating and crying out if you touched him anywhere. Wed was worse, he didn't want to walk at all and still not eating. I took him to the vet who said everything was fine, she thought he had ulcers and gave him meds for that.
1226735 tn?1379103293 We feel alone in addiction sometimes so I thought it would be nice to see who else shares this disease. Please add people to the list that you know of. !
Avatar f tn Ok so we have a king charles dog we have had for 4yrs. We are worried how he will react to our new arrival as he is king of the castle since day one!! lol! any tips of how to handle him with new baby etc.???
Avatar f tn My dog (cavalier king Charles spaniel female 1 year and half) was spayed exactly one week ago. Soon after the spaying we noticed a lot of fresh blood in her urine. So we went back to the veterinarian who said it is probably a UTI and prescribed antibiotics. The next day the urine was clear. We felt relieved and thought everything is fine. Than the next day she had fresh blood in her urine again, a lot of blood. It looked like it was pure blood.
Avatar n tn I had corresponded (online) with Dr. Charles (www charles-retina com) about what I might do to correct the problems I was having following my ERM peel in 2006. Dr. Charles had recommended further surgery, so I consulted three of the reputedly "best" retinal surgeons in Chicago. All of them strongly recommended against further surgery, and I gave up on the idea. My problems had gotten worse by early 2009.
Avatar n tn Bless your heart. You've apparently lost the most important things in your life, and Charlie was the last straw, right? You did everything you could for him, and then some, and it was not only right but good to ease him out of his suffering. I completely understand that you need to mourn Charlie's loss, but I do hope in time that you will find room in your heart for another dog - or any other animal companion.
535822 tn?1443976780 I also feel with the turbulence we are all facing in our lives now with food and gas prices rocketing,/many other problems , that anything good and happy that happens is in fact therapeutic..

Avatar f tn I recently got a 3 year old King Charles Spaniel and she pees on the carpet all the time. I have had many other breeds and never had any problems training them, but she is a "space cadet". She is sweet but doesn't seem to "get it". She is also hyper. I love her, but the peeing is out of control. I cage her when I am gone and walk her every three hours, but she still just goes when she wants to. Any opinions or help with this?
1759127 tn?1313672497 I touched his head, and panting with exertion, he swung around racing after a little King Charles Spaniel he was playing with. He glanced back at me, then turned and kept on running. That has always stayed in my mind as being something very precious to have experienced.
Avatar f tn I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 11kg (he's big but NOT fat) and am researching the best food to give him as he is in Congestive heart failure. The only food the vet recommended are the prescription diets (Hills, Royal Canin etc) and I refuse to give those as they have animal by products etc so I feed Burns Low fat (low sodium) u til I find something better. My real issue though is low sodium chews.

Avatar f tn Hi, like Selma I read about King Charles spaniels in my search for CM info. Are you saying that surgery on *dogs* has a poor outcome? If so, I think you have to accept that you have a handicapped dog--but the good news is that you get to spoil her as much as you want!
Avatar n tn Based on my personal experience, I would highly recommend Dr. Steve Charles in Memphis, Tennessee (www charles-retina com.) He is very skilled and experienced with ERMs, and the cost of having this procedure in Memphis are about 50% less than in a bigger city like Chicago. (I had this surgery in both places.) You can contact Dr. Charles for more specific information.
