Common Questions and Answers about Heart disease diet lose weight

Avatar m tn Atkins has more research on it than any other diet because it was developed originally to prevent heart disease (the creator, Dr. Atkins, died of heart disease!) The research showed that the diet did not work in the long run and was unhealthy in the long run, as it's too high in protein and too low in antioxidant rich foods. That's not to say it doesn't have its champions, but it hasn't panned out as hoped over time.

Avatar m tn How were you treated for Graves Disease? Are you now hypo? Are you on thyroid replacement hormones? If so, which ones, what dosage and for how long have you been on it? It's possible that you need to increase your med dosage, if you aren't losing weight. Typically, when thyroid hormone levels are adequate weight will come off. If you have current labs you could post, that would be helpful for us.
Avatar f tn 2 in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows the low carb high fat diet excels for weight loss and heart health. The low fat diet saw more lean muscle lost than body fat. Good tip: avoid low fat everything. :) "People who avoid carbohydrates and eat more fat, even saturated fat, lose more body fat and have fewer cardiovascular risks than people who follow the low-fat diet that health authorities have favored for decades, a major new study shows.
526889 tn?1212540641 For your age you need 1500 calories daily to safely lose weight. I would recommend a Heart Healthy diet which is a moderate fat diet. Moderate fat diet means = use polyunsaturated (omega 3, corn oil, nuts, etc) fats and monounsaturated (olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, etc) fats, no saturated fats (high fat snack foods, butter, fat spreads) and no trans fats.
Avatar n tn Yes, it will result in weight loss, but as Selma warns, it isn't a procedure one would choose to lose weight comfortably. The question reminds me of the old adage, the best way to quit drinking is to slap a policeman in the face and run, you will stop drinking! I've had the surgery, I did lose weight, but it wasn't much fun.
Avatar n tn I have always struggled with dieting... I really want to lose weight & get healthy. I began working out today & it felt good! But I am soo out of shape! Any tips to help me stay motivated? To help me not cave while dieting?
Avatar n tn Do you take NSaids? I'm asking because my primary told me at my last visit that Nsaids such as Ibuprofen can cause swelling, which I've taken for many years for various reasons and she thought may be the reason for my swelling. I was told a few times back in 2004 when I complained of some problems to doctors, that if I JUST lost weight all my problems would go away.
Avatar f tn it’s about ‘healthy’ eating. With cutting on diet one may initially lose weight but this may remain static or increase later due to fat accumulation. When one cuts down on calories, the body sends a signal to the brain which in turn turns on the ‘stress hormones’ and the body switches into the ‘starvation mode’ and paradoxically one may notice no change in weight or an increased weight and fat accumulation.
3232858 tn?1437130677 Eating vegetables isn't necessary to lose weight, but it is necessary for health. They should be the majority of your diet as they are the main source for the protective antioxidants that prevent chronic illness and heart disease. Now, when you say you hate vegetables, there are an awful lot of them. There are also fruits that some people think are vegetables and eat as vegetables, such as squash.
Avatar f tn I have reduced my carbohydrates and sugars. I can not lose weight. I weigh 188 lbs and am a 44 year old female. Any suggestions?

Avatar f tn Other than that one drug there are no real dietary restrictions except eating enough and including some fats for better absorption of the ribavirin. Most people lose their appetite and lose some weight while on interferon and ribavirin. I gained 6 pounds during the high-fat Incivek phase, then lost 25 pounds during the latter phase of only interferon and ribavirin (in spite of eating whatever I wished).
Avatar f tn therefore she goes on diet after diet and loses then gains it all back -- maybe what she really needs is to get her thyroid levels balanced, then with a good diet and exercise program, she might lose weight and keep it off. Just my opinion............ I will agree that sugar free (as in refined sugar) is good, because of the blood sugar issues - spikes and valleys. I see no reason for gluten free, dairy free, or fruit free unless one has an allergy to them.
Avatar n tn Try either the Dean Ornish heart-reversal diet or the South Beach Diet. If you have known heart disease, the Ornish diet is better because it most effectively cleanses the system of excess fat. The South Beach Diet is usually for those with risk factors but no known heart disease. This diet allows more latitude and can still get a person to the recommended targets.
