Common Questions and Answers about Heads up concussion in high school sports

concussion

Avatar n tn I sympathize with you and understand your situation very well, since I had suffered a few injuries myself, in my younger days as a soccer player (high school and college level). It was very frustrating, but that's unfortunately common in the world of sports.
Avatar n tn m older? Trust me when I was in high school I loved football with every ounce in my body, I loved to nail people as hard as I could, but now that I've quit playing I deeply regret ever playing, because now all I want to do is be able to grow old and enjoy my family. Hopefully God will bless me, I feel as if he already has in the sense that I decided not to play college football. I hope you make the right choice.
Avatar m tn I appreciate the concern, as well as the well informed answer, but it was not entirely their fault as I myself made several stupid decisions when dealing with this, I just wanted to know if my actions will affect me for the rest of my life.
Avatar n tn As you know, a "Grade 1" concussion is the mildest category. That being said,m there is no such thing as a "harmless concussion", and in the final analysis Lacross is a meaningless activity. Missing a season is not worth a lifetime of problems. I am somewhat concerned he did not have an MRI, and insofar as school authorities are mandated to pick-up-the-bill, this non-invasive test should have been provided.
Avatar n tn I am getting headaches every day at the same time. Could this be from the concussion? Should I have it checked out before I go back to school next week?
Avatar f tn I am by no means an expert, but I have heard plenty of stories of people with concussions having lasting effects. Did your son's doctor mention Post Concussion Syndrome? Perhaps your son's ability to absorb impacts to the head is compromised. Recent studies have shown that children who get multiple CT scans show higher rates of brain tumors later in life. The radiation from a CT scan is significant and should only be done when necessary, especially in children.
Avatar m tn I'm in highschool and during soccer i got a concussion, the doctors said my brain was fine in a cat scan but ever since I have had chronic migraines and headaches for a year now. I saw a neurologist and am on amitriptyline and zolmitriptan. It has reduced my headaches from everyday to four times a week and my migraines from twice a week to once a month. i found that also pushing myself through physical exercise helps too. I still cannot attend school though and am homeschooled as a result.
Avatar f tn It is abundantly clear that in some cases concussions may result in seizures. That is not a "theory". It is a medical fact. It doesn't require "discussion". But not all concussions result in a seizure. There can be varying degrees of damage depending on the severity off the blow, where the impact takes place, and from resultant swelling, and if there is a delay in seeking medical attention. A "concussion" is not a "concussion".
Avatar f tn We have a Blue Ribbon Public Montessori School here and I put Owen in the lottery - I hope he gets in as the school he goes to now after PK-4 has a very small and expensive K program! He is florishing in the program and he has great teachers. I hope to keep him in Montessori for as long as I can. I do not think you can go wrong with Montessori! Thanks again for your insights. 163305 tn?1333668571 com/categories/hbot-concussion The concept is the use of a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to treat concussion/sports injuries, which would be the same concept of using an oxygen chamber to treat fibromyalgia pain. There's a little boy who was injured in Hurricane Sandy in 2012, when a tree fell through the roof of their home, onto his head. His parents were experimenting with an oxygen chamber.
Avatar m tn His headache persisted for three days, on day 4 he had some visual disturbance, but no headache, we have him home, resting, no school, no sports. Is this type of visual disturbance a typical post concussion symptom ?
Avatar n tn I threw up the day after the injury and stayed home, after returning to school the after the weekend (I threw up the saturday) it got a little worse. Progressively it got worse and worse until today, one week later, it was a really bad pain and it lasted a while (a good hour) until I had enough and took paracetamol. Please help, I'm not sure, what could be going on?

Avatar f tn Out headboard is about three and a half to four feet higher than our heads while we sleep. We have this rectangular block that has candles in it ( made of wood) on our headboard which she knocked off and it fell right on our heads. It weighs about 4 lbs. My boyfriend got a cut and an abrasion, plus a goose egg and a bit of bruising on his head from it. It barely got me. He has had severe headaches every day since I haPpened and even nausea a few times since then.
Avatar f tn Hello! I was just a month ago or so diagnosed with type 1 Chiari malformation, but the fact is that I'm 17 years old and still in high school with PE classes which are mandatory. I went to a neurologist but she wasn't one I would trust because all she basically said to me was which was written on my MRI results. I have an appointment with another neurologist but it's on 19th Feb. What I'm wondering is if there are things which I shouldn't be doing in PE classes?
Avatar f tn I suffered a concussion 4 months ago when I fell during a parade with my high school band. My mom took me to the ER and I was diagnosed with a concussion. I had a CT scan and nothing was out of the ordinary, and it seemed to just be a mild concussion. 4 months later, I'm still having issues. I'm a junior in high school and concentration and memory issues made me switch out of all of my honors classes into regular ones and drop both math and science completely.
233488 tn?1310693103 There is a major risk of eye injury in racquet sports and your husband MUST wear safety sports glasses for his tennis game. (I have seen eyes blinded from tennis injuries). Quite some time back a survey was taken of retina surgeons about letting their patients return to full activities after retinal detachment surgery (much more extensive than what your husband had).
Avatar m tn A concussion is a brain injury caused by sudden blow to the head or body including high-speed sports, where brain inside the skull shakes, preventing brain to function normally. Symptoms can range from passing out, confusion, coordination and balance problems; nausea etc. post concussion syndrome develops over time and is worse than before injury. Symptoms are headaches or blurry vision.
Avatar f tn I had a severe concussion and was out of sports for a whole year in high school because I had persistent symptoms like dizziness and headaches. You may be at risk for something like an aneurysm, clot, hemorrhage so play it safe and go to your Dr.
Avatar m tn First off, I created an account just minutes ago after googling "neurology forum" and I ended up here so please excuse me if these sort of questions aren't allowed or I'm posting in the wrong section. I'm a 17 year old male who is in good physical condition and is very active.
5831327 tn?1377816314 ll be brief as possible but give little history. I was in a high speed head on years ago. They diagnosed me with a concussion and sent me packing. That was in 98...fat forward to 06 and one day my right arm goes numb. Comes back to near normal, but tingly. Then both arms start and the numbness, tingling, burning, itching are not going away. Finally get an approval for a cervical mri. Turns out the disc between is shot and the disc guts are pushing into the cord and flexing it out.
Avatar n tn I have son in High school as freshmen. He has been an average student in middle school, but now he is failing his grade in spite of us spending lot of time teaching him in home. He does not take responsibility himself, and needs to be pushed always to do things at home How do I find what is wrong with him? or Has ADD? What type of doctors I should take him too?
Avatar m tn A doctor generally looks for focal neurological or generalized neurological symptoms that would show there is a pressure on brain somewhere. In absence of these symptoms and based on the history a diagnosis of concussion is given. If concussion is severe, and there is underlying brain injury, then yes, even death can occur. Hope this helps! Take care!
20620809 tn?1504362969 My boy plays football in high school. He tore his ACL and had surgery. We have some guidelines but am wondering if anyone else has been through this and how long we should expect him to heal. Will he ever be the same? He runs track in the spring and has been an excellent sprinter. We're worried this could ruin his ability to have that same speed. And should he ever return to football?
