Avatar m tn For a cough, try something like guaifenesin, like Robitussin Severe Congestion Liquagels or Mucinex. Avoid dextramethorphan, like Robitussin DM. It is okay to treat the symptoms of your cough, but if you are getting symptoms that point toward bacterial infection requiring antibiotics, make sure you see your doctor. Examples of symptoms to watch for are fever, coughing up colored phlegm, pain in your chest when you cough, shortness of breath, or any symptoms lasting more than 10 days or so.
Avatar f tn Does anyone use decongestants (Guiefenesin found in cough syrup & cold meds) to help CM to be a good consistency? I heard it helps the sperm get through more easily. A friend of mine was TTC for five years and her husband had low motility. She started taking cough syrup and within 6-12 months, got pregnant and miscarried a few weeks in (in Nov.) & now is 5 weeks pregnant again and everything is looking good. I have been TTC for two years and am wondering if I should try it. Is it safe?
Avatar n tn I have random urine drug screens and random blood screens for alcohol. Am wanting to take Tylenol sinus congestion medicine. The ingredients are acetaminophen, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine. Will any of those ingredients caus a positive drug or alcohol test?
Avatar m tn Do saline nasal rinsing with a neti pot. Drink warm water or not tea throughout the day. Do you know about guaifenesin? It moisturizes your entire respiratory tract from the inside out and thins mucus. You want your mucus moist & thin so it can run down the throat or out the nose and not be thick. you want THIN MUCUS AT ALL TIMES. I take guaifenesin every single day and I drink LOTS of water. When getting over a cold it's very helpful to ease congestion.
979826 tn?1389036358 Hi Molly, I don't know if this is still relevant for you but I have chronic sinus pressure/congestion and it I am certain that is the cause of my chiari related headaches. I had the decompression surgery two years ago. Most of my symptoms are better. My neck is bothersome quite often, but I don't know if it is related to chiari or the fact that I have two cervical discs that herniate a couple times a year.

Avatar f tn If the guaifenesin breaks up sinus mucus, it stands to reason that it will break up the mucus in your stomach. I got a wicked case of gastritis from mucinex. I deduced this was the reason why.
4916735 tn?1360986597 I am a hypothyroid patient and I have a cold with sore throat, coughing and congestion. What medicines over the counter can I take?
Avatar f tn In that case you need a mucus thinner/expectorant. Buy an over-the-counter preparation that has guaifenesin, preferably only guaifenesin. Take a tablet and drink a full glass of water. It helps greatly. In fact the worst episodes I have with asthma involve serious congestion. You can also start using natural anti-inflammatories. These help greatly and thee are no side effects. As to diet, be very careful about sweets and too much starch. These cause a proliferation of Candida albicans.
Avatar n tn Purchase an over-the-counter expectorant. That should help you ou by loosening the mucus. They come in both long-action tablet form and liquid..
Avatar f tn What's safest to take otc medication for sneezing, sinus drainage and sinus congestion, I was told Sudafed but not exactly which one considering there's like 40 different ones.
Avatar f tn Have any of you ladies experienced sinus problems early in pregnancy? I am only 7 dpo but have been having sinus congestion. I know it's not a cold just a stuffy, runny, & sneezy nose. I know with my first pregnancy I had congestion but I don't remember when it started as we were not trying with #1 so I wasn't paying attention since I didn't even know I was pregnant at first.
Avatar m tn It can cause some of those things. Numbers 1,7,8,9 & 10. Are you washing your nose with warm salt water? Get a neti pot and do that every single day at least once - and get some guaifenesin. My 2nd ENT sat me down and said : "I'm going to give you the keys to the kingdom: Control the mucus. Mucus is caustic and it creates inflammation if it lingers in your system".
Avatar n tn These types of drugs help clear up sinus and head congestion. Phenylephrine is available over the counter at drug stores. Some people feel that another decongestant, pseudoephedrine, works better than phenylephrine. Pseudoephedrine is available behind the counter at drug stores. If you do not notice an improvement in your sinus congestion after 7 days, or if you have a fever, please notify your doctor since these are usually signs of an infection.
Avatar n tn Agree with Resilient_Mimi. Most likely the "added congestion" is just the breaking up of congestion that was already there. Guaifensen is a safe expectorant and should help considerably. Water is also great for helping to thin and expell mucous. It sounds like you may need a second round of antibiotics though since it has taken this long to start breaking the gunk up. Be sure to call your doctor on Mondy to check in and let him know how you are doing.
Avatar m tn me when I asked him if I could get a red mark from a sinus congestion...is that common, really happen that much to have redness with sinus problems...should I be concerned, or just treat the sinus infections/congestion with over the counter medications and antibioitcs (when needed) as I have been doing. Thanks again.
Avatar m tn I just moved to Denver from Chicago. Right before we left, I could tell I had a sinus infection, as I have a long history of sinus issues. I also have stomach issues, history of a couple ulcers. A couple of ENT's have told me I have obvious signs of GERD, though I don't often have indigestion, sometimes I can taste acid in the morning. Anyway, I saw a doc when I arrived in Denver and she gave me Biaxin for the sinus infection. Only it doesn't seem to have cleared up.
Avatar f tn I recently saw my ENT for horrible sinus congestion. During the exam it was discovered I had a few nasal polyps growing and a lot of swelling in all sinus cavities. The doctor gave me a steroid injection and perscribed a new nasal spray, Zetonna. This nasal spray is an aerosol powder instead of liquid. I have used it for a couple days and have noticed that the congestion has gotten worse. Shouldn't the congestion be getting better with the steroid shot and nasal spray?
Avatar n tn I went to the doctor 12 days ago was told I had bronchitis and asthma Got z pack and prednisone and prednisone shot. Not any better - now slight cough, headache, congestion, dizzy and flushed and at night wake up all sweaty.
Avatar f tn Hello, If you have a cough and a headache , chances are there that it is due to sinus congestion. Sinus headaches are caused by sinus congestion and inflammation (called sinusitis). The sinuses are air-filled spaces lined with mucous membranes surrounding the forehead, cheeks and eyes. Healthy sinuses allow mucus to drain and air to circulate throughout the nasal passages. However it is important to rule out other causes of headaches as tension headache, migraines or neurological causes as well.
Avatar f tn I have something similar - pretty constant congestion and sinus issues, apparently pretty normal in pregnancy as our bodies produce more mucus. Another "joy" of pregnancy, right? What has really helped me is doing regular sinus rinses with a neti pot or Neomed sinus rinse (can get this at any drug store).
Avatar n tn I have had this happen with a very bad cold that I had, the congestion wasn't draining so I had used Mucinex for a few days to help clear it out. The guaifenesin in it is what helps drain out the mucus in your head. I just had to make sure I drank a lot of water to help it along. Let us know what ends up working for you and definitely see a doctor if you are running a fever or are in any pain.
