I'm currently on Amoxicillin 500mg for a sinus infection 3x a day for 10-21 days. I'm on my 6th day and it's gotten a little better but I still have a headache, sore throat and some ear pressure. Is there anything else I can do to get rid of these symptoms. I've used the steam, eucalyptus oil and humidifier. Should I try Guaifenesin or singulair?
guaifenesin has no side effects and is even safe for children. It is marketed for respiratory mucus problems and is available without prescription in various strengths.
I been told by my e.n.t that I have a sinus infection. He gave me amoxecyllline for ten days the first time he said I had a sinus infection. It seem to help some but my symptoms came back. Last week he gave me levofloxacin because I've been having trouble breathing through my nose. Been taking it for three days but I still feel my sinus swell and still having lots of problems .breathing through my nose. He also told me that I have a deviated septum. My question is.
The ENT gave me clarithromycin 500mg (10 day) and methylprednisolone 4mg (6day) which has helped I believe get rid of the infection. During the treatment I also used a neti pot once in the morning for three days after reading how it helps and also because I was desperate for relief. Now after over a month and finishing all my medications about a week ago, two symptoms still seem to remain.
Now I would just like to have the scan and get on antibiotics if I have a sinus infection instead of waiting for an ENT appointment to do that procedure. The other reason I want to know soon is if it's not my sinuses I may have to go off one of my more recently reintroduced medicines and see if that set this off. If you have had an endoscopy to check your sinuses, what was your experience with it?
Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.' Thanks for sharing what works for u when u have sinus issues...many of us have this problem and I know there is a more recent thread on this same topic. I agree with ur logic and how and y certain things may cause chiari symptoms to resurface....makes total sense to me.
I have had stuffy nose and sinus pain most of my life. Ive been diagnosed with asthma and take Advair and Zyrtec D. Ive had the allegry tests and the exrays, nothing foudn to be the wource. I still have a stuffy nose and frequent sinus headaches I was diagnosed with stage 1 sarcoidosis many years ago (bronchoscopy) but have had no flare ups in more than 15 years. your thoughts on how to reduce or eiminate the chronsic stuffiness ?
I've had sinus problems for years but nothing like this! At the end of October, my sinuses started bothering me, my left ear became blocked and the lymph node under it swelled up. I went to the doctor. She ordered a CBC blood test (never heard results) and an antibiotic to help clear up the lymph node. I knew the antibiotic would probably do nothing for my sinuses. My sinuses are causing severe headaches, drainage and mucous. I also have reflux disease.
My first thought was- what the heck is going on- I have this bad sinus infection , on meds for that for 20 days- it never goes away- was told to take celexa- (which I took at the same time as the anti-biotic)- and then started having attacks, tingling in my fingers and toes, and then I am being sent to a pyschologists? for anxiety or panic disorder.??? I really hope you get better and I did go to chiropractor ( I have not been in a few months though)...maybe I should go back for a visit.
In February of this year I got a CT scan and the ENT doctor said I have a severe deviated septum with chronic sinusitis. I was treated for a sinus infection and that was it. I still felt bad so I went to a neurologist. He wrote it off as a vestibular problem. I did vestibular therapy for 2 months with almost no relief. In May when allergy season started, everything got worse. I have had nonstop sinus pressure/pain, headache, dizziness, major eye strain, my face is sore, my teeth are sore.
My nose runs more, but I can breathe thru my nose. I'm thinking I may have more success now with the antibiotics for the sinus infection - or not. Cooks follow recipes. Chefs create their own. Be a chef, not a cook.
Does anyone use decongestants (Guiefenesin found in cough syrup & cold meds) to help CM to be a good consistency? I heard it helps the sperm get through more easily. A friend of mine was TTC for five years and her husband had low motility. She started taking cough syrup and within 6-12 months, got pregnant and miscarried a few weeks in (in Nov.) & now is 5 weeks pregnant again and everything is looking good. I have been TTC for two years and am wondering if I should try it. Is it safe?
Every time I catch a cold or am treated for a sinus infection, I wind up with a cough due to excessive mucus that won't go away. I'm sure it's from a post-nasal drip because I feel it at the back of my throat. This time around, I caught a virus and was on antibiotics for 2 weeks for a sinus infection. The infection cleared up, but now I'm stuck with this excess clear mucus and I can't get it to stop! I've become a phlegm fountain!
I have had severe cough and sinus congestion for 4-5 days; which is worse at night,I took oral decongestant psedoephedrine with guaifenesin and I could not sleep two nights in a row, it kept me awake. I do not know if I should go to a doctor and spend money( as I do not have medical insurance, and it's expensive for me.), or should I continue to use over the counter medications and wait until it disappears by itself or I am afraid it might get worse.
But if you want you can take Sudafed but it has to be the plain kinda and here where i live its only available at the pharmacy all you have to do is ask for it don't get the Sudafed PE kinda that will be bad you want the one with pseudoephedrine =) and as far as the sore throat i would take plain Robitussin (guaifenesin) but it can only be that ingredient...
Depending on how I feel that is.... ready for shot 8 today.. And I missed my riba last nite.....errrr I hate when that happens.... Monday morning will get another shot of Procrit. Will check back when I get home , for responses about the Muculix.. Have A Great Friday everyone.
Two medicines that can help thin mucus are guaifenesin and SSKI. These are minimally effective for most people but work well for others and are worth a try. Ask the ENT about these.
Amoxicillin (Amoxil) is an acceptable first antibiotic for an uncomplicated acute sinus infection.Generally an effective antibiotic needs to be continued for a minimum of 10-14 days. Taking decongestants (pseudoephedrine) and mucolytics (guaifenesin) orally may be helpful in assisting drainage of sinus infection. If you are prone to recurrent bouts of sinus infection it may be important for you to consider allergy testing to see if this is the underlying cause of your recurring problem.
For 2 years I have had a problem with one inner ear not draining properly due to colds/sinus stopping up the eustacion(sp?) tube. What cold/sinus medicines can I safely take that might clear this problem? Ear doctor has tried guaifenesin(1200mg/12hrs)and Nasonex spray but these have not worked. The only thing that works is putting a vent tube in eardrum- I've had 3 of these. Help!
Hi I have had chronic sinus issues for yrs have had allergirgy skin and blood test food and enviorment .just had normal ct I avoid dairy for sinus and stomach issues.
guaifenesin has no side effects and is even safe for children. It is marketed for respiratory mucus problems and is available without prescription in various strengths. something else that is very good to have on hand is an all natural nasal spray called Xlear. it is made with Xylitol - some health food stores sell it - you can also buy it on-line. it is like a mucous "dissolver" - really good to use during the day between times you do saline nasal rinsing. non-habit forming.
yes there have been warnings about ameobeas in the water - it's very rare and happens mostly in the south- so use distilled water...for nose rinsing. if you make daily saline nasal rinsing a part of your normal routine you will breathe better, feel better and your allergies will calm down. One nasal rinse clears out so much mucus - especially if you are also taking the guaifenesin and drinking warm tea or warm water. And using the Xlear natural nasal spray.
thank you for your help
You seem to have established a pattern, which leads me to believe you may be suffering from allergies, try treating you symptoms with antihistiamines sold over the counter, there are several, diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine, and loratadine are very inexpensive, you can also add guaifenesin to thin mucous and a nasal decongestant for sinus/ear pressure and post nasal drip.
Lung congestion, sinus run all the time down back of the throat. Head congestion, dizziness and unbalance, Some time i choke from coughing when phlems lets go and plug the airway, there fore passing out for short instant. Cat scan of the lung showed copd. Stevia puffer was prescribed. I sleep with a cpap and I dont cough while sleeping, I start to cough once i get up and start moving around. When the phlems comes up it is as tick as butter.
You might want to try that for a little relief, or even check into nebulized sinus antibiotics for your sinus infection, I've done that too. Now if they just had a great cure for post nasal drip, non stop throat clearing, non productive coughs and a head full of jello -- but then life would be perfect and we just can't have that :) Afterall, you can't appreciate good if you've never experienced bad, right?
I have random urine drug screens and random blood screens for alcohol. Am wanting to take Tylenol sinus congestion medicine. The ingredients are acetaminophen, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine. Will any of those ingredients caus a positive drug or alcohol test?
He found a polyp blocking my passage into my maxiallary sinus. I now have to have a CT to get a better look at the sinus. He said changing my meds isn't going to help because I am on everything he would put me on. I guess I will find out more in the next couple of weeks. I just want the headaches gone...
Well, in mid-September I got really sick with a sinus infection; about a week later I was put on antiobioctics for 10 days. However, I developed a really nast cough - so I called and they put me on another round of antibioctics that were stronger. The cough still persisted and I went in for a follow-up, was given a temp inhaler and decongest. No fever or other symptoms, just the cough coupled with some ear plugging and nose stuff here and there.
My younger brother, who was born with a GI birth defect, and as such has no motility in his esophagus, has suffered from this issue for years. The whole lot of us has or has had chronic sinus problems. For my brother, I know mucus plus an excellent gag reflex generally makes for a bad time (and yes, he does have the GERD as well). I've been taking the Guaifenesin type product to thin secretions, and I honestly think that has made things worse for me, at least as far as the vomiting.
