Mucolytic medication that thin mucus, such as guaifenesin and potassium iodide are probably not harmful, but studies have not confirmed the effectiveness or value. Guaifenesin may also have some cough suppressant activity, but not to the extent that it might compromise a useful, productive cough. Those medications that induce sleep or contain cough suppressants, such as antitussives, narcotics including codeine, and antihistamines should be avoided.
Am taking 600mg of guaifenesin in tablet form (over the counter) 3 x a day, herbal teas, humidified bedroom...but it seems worse, especially starting at 2am. Tried sleeping sitting up and that is better but not good enough. Used a personal steamer with a disk of menthol for 15 minutes yesterday evening. I'm fine while breathing steam, but not at other times. Is there no relief from the cough?

A majority of patients in the amitriptyline group achieved a complete response on the initial dose of 10 mg. None of the codeine/guaifenesin group achieved a complete response. The data were analyzed using a logistic regression model, and amitriptyline was found to be a highly significant predictor of a greater than 50% response when compared with codeine/guaifenesin (P = .0007). The same data were analyzed using a proportional odds model and similar results were noted.

Cough due to viral upper respiratory tract infection may be relieved with the combination of guaifenesin and codeine, but not always. The main issue with the opioids such as morphine, diamorphine and codeine is that any potentially effective dose is usually associated with physical dependence, respiratory depression and gastrointestinal colic. Other drugs have been tried.

i looked it up on google, and it is a combination of these two things: "Codeine is a narcotic analgesic (pain reliever) derived from opium. It is used alone and in combination products to treat mild to moderate pain and as a cough suppressant. Guaifenesin is a drug that reduces the thickness and stickiness of mucus. It is used for short-term relief of dry, nonproductive cough and mucus in the breathing passages.
(and, yes, I know the gall bladder is no longer there - I'm just describing what it feels like) whenever I have to take any kind of narcotic or antimotility drug. i.e., Lomotil, demerol, codeine, morphine - you name it. This is a serious problem because doctors don't seem to understand it and just stare at me incredulously. In fact, one jerk of an ENT in this major SW city told me to "just take more" when I told him that the narcotic pain killers would cause severe pain.
) Anyway, does anyone know anything about the cough syrup Guaifenesin w/ codeine? How much codeine does it have in it? It doesnt say on the bottle. Any comments would be appreciated.
