In the USA there is a tendency to use more I-131, but in many other countries (and in our office) we often use anti-thyroid meds such as methimazole for Graves and consider surgery for treatment as well. If it is a hot nodule, then would recommend either I-131 or surgery (w/ an expert thyroid surgeon).
I am a 25 y/o female diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at 16 and later with Graves Disease and Goiter. I have been on Tapazol along with Atenelol (for the Tachacardia) off and on for the past 9 years with no results. Every doc I see wants to discuss nothing but RAI or surgery. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for a few years with no success. I finally found out that I was pregnant the beginning of last year and made it to 4 months and suffered a miscarriage for no apparent reason.
iam apatient who suffers graves disease. My question is : Although I am almost 4 months on Carbamizole treatment 60 mg + Taking inderal ( propanalol), but the levels of my T4 & T3 are still high and the levels of TSH is less than 0.01.
what do you think , should i sstop the medication and think of the other allternatives like the radioactive iodine or surgical removal?
my son was a newly diagnosed "graves disease" pt. he was given tatazole tablet 5mg. to be taken after breakfast for one month, what are the side effect of tatazole, the things he have to avoid and if you can give me more/additional information about the disease. thanks!
Last year I was diagnosed with Graves disease and had a radioactive ablation done in April. Sometime around March of 2009, my eyelids became puffy and my eyes were usually watery. I called my Endocrinologist and asked if this was related to my thyroid and she sugg. I visit my Primary Care Dr. I did and he followed an allergy path. I finally went to an allergist who said that allergies may be playing a role, it was not the primary cause.

Graves Disease is never cured BUT it is managed better without a thyroid or after RAI.
You still have the antibodies but no thyroid for it to attack.
As for meds, you swap one lot for another.
You go from anti-thyroid meds to a T4 medication so basically you are on meds for life.
The thyroid regulates every organ in your body and if no thyroid, meds have to do the job.
Hyperthyroidism is a lot easier to manage without a thyroid.
I believe the statistic is less than 50% of those who have Graves thyroid disease develop any symptoms of Graves Eye Disease. Each is caused by different sets of antibodies. Some people get eye disease without ever having thyroid problems. And, of those with Graves/thyroid who do develop eye disease, only about 5% of those ever develop serious enough eye problems (bulging, eyelid retraction, double vision, optic nerve issues) to warrant surgery.
I agree with you on surgery. Ridha Ahrem, author of The Thyroid Solution, does not recommend RAI for Graves in children, but surgery. There is a slight risk of stomach cancer in a ten year study (8 percent) for RAI patients. No studies have been done beyond ten years.

I was diagnosed with Grave's about 5 weeks ago. Doc put me on Methimizole and I had a sever allergic reaction. Took me off meds and went in for follow-up 1 wk ltr. Was told that I can do Radioactive Iodine Treatment or Surgery...I'm soooo confused. My numbers are literally BORDERLINE hyperthyroidism...doc said I should not wait too long to make decision. If I am borderline, why do something so drastic? Does this mean if I decide not to do either treatment, my numbers will go higher.

While I would have to do some checking around on this can you post the reason for the removal? - Is it for Graves disease?
Is there any treatment for grave's eye disease to prevent the disfiguring look? Can you recommend a specialist in Michigan who is will knowledgable about the disease and willing to treat aggressively? Please help.
M PCP told me i had graves disease and referred me to an endo. The endo said that all of my symptoms "were in my head and nothing was wrong". A few years go by and I see my PCP again and asked how I have been treating my thyroid problems and I said "I don't have one". He showed me the consult report from the Endo confirming my PCP diagnosis. My question is this, What am I to do now? I have lost about 20 lbs. when i only weighed 110 2years ago and hair loss.
My daughter was diagnosed with Graves on June 4th. She is 6. Luckily, I'm a teacher and have been able to stay at home with her the past couple of months to get this under control. I feel like our lives have been turned upside down. We started out with a sore throat and a diagnosis from an ENT of Thyroiditis......We ended up seeing a pediatric endocrinologist in an emergency visit because of her heart rate. We've been on methimazole since.
