Common Questions and Answers about Graves disease symptoms hypothyroidism

Avatar n tn At first my endocrinologist was reluctant to prescribe more than a token amount of levosynthroid, although I was becoming symptomatic with hypothyroid symptoms. She feared Graves disease returning. I see her every 6 weeks and get blood drawn, and she has gradually raised the synthroid every time so that I am up to 112 mg per day. Obviously, every time I get labs done, I am thyroid-deficient. The last TSH level was 9.5. 9.5 is high, but not super high. Nonetheless, I feel exhausted.
Avatar f tn Similarly, sarcoidosis of the thyroid gland may develop in response to an established thyroid disorder including Gravesdisease, nodular goiter, and thyroid cancer. Patients with Gravesdisease may also have concomitant conditions of sarcoidosis affecting the lungs. Patients with systemic sarcoidosis may also develop sarcoid lesions in various organs including the thyroid gland.
Avatar f tn hi i'm a 28 yr old woman and have suffered badly with symptoms from graves disease for 3yrs i've been on propylthiouracil for a year now as i had a severe allergic reaction to carbimazole! my symptoms include insomnia, severe fatigue, anxiety, bouts of depression, poor concentration, memory loss, bruising easily, dizziness, nausea and graves rage and weakened immune system (sick often). the problem is that i've recently had a blood test that read normal at 5.
Avatar n tn t ever tested for it until they have symptoms of the resulting hypothyroidism. Slightly elevated TPOab can also be present with Graves Disease, which is another thyroid disease, and there are those, that have both Hashi's and Graves. It may also be possible, though rare, for someone with Hashimoto's or Graves not to develop hypo or hyperthyroidism.
Avatar f tn What med are you taking? What are the actual T3/T4 levels and are they Free T3 and Free T4 or Total T3 and Total T4? Be sure to include reference ranges with any labs posted. Have you been tested for Graves Disease or Hashimoto's Thyroiditis? Both are autoimmune diseases that attack the thyroid. All Graves Disease is hyperthyroidism, but not all hyperthyroidism is Graves Disease.
Avatar m tn I meant to say that the symptoms of Graves Disease will go away, but once you have the disease, you always have it.
Avatar f tn Have you been tested for thyroid antibodies to make sure you do, in fact, have Graves disease and are not simply in a hyper phase of Hashimoto's? Both Graves and Hashimoto's are autoimmune. While Graves is always connected with hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's is most often connected with hypothyroidism, however it's not uncommon for one to have periods of hyperthyroidism in the beginning stages. You should ask for thyroid antibody tests.
Avatar m tn I have a family history of thyroid disease, my sister and maternal grandmother have graves diseases and my father and paternal grandmother have hypothryoidism. I have 14 month old twins and at the end of my pregnancy with them I was told I was borderline for hypothyroidism and placed on levothyroxine 25mcg, I also had gestational diabetes. After they were born the doctor told me I should be fine without the medication and I stopped taking it.
Avatar f tn Anxiety and irritability A fine tremor of the hands or fingers Heat sensitivity and an increase in perspiration or warm, moist skin Weight loss, despite normal eating habits Enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter) Change in menstrual cycles Erectile dysfunction or reduced libido Frequent bowel movements Bulging eyes (Graves' ophthalmopathy) Fatigue Thick, red skin usually on the shins or tops of the feet (Graves' dermopathy) Rapid or irregular heartbeat (palpitations) Sleep disturban
Avatar f tn I am 27 years old ... have had thyroid problems since pregnant with my daughter almost two years ago! they were watching my thyroid levels prior to that pregnancy though. They say that I have hypothyroidism (thyroid don't work) buut I also have antibodies for graves disease ... although my thyroid jumps from hypo to hyper frequantly ... my question is will I ALWAYS have the antibodies for Graves disease? Makes it possible to get graves disease and most importantly ... is it heretitery?
Avatar f tn I am a 25 y/o female diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at 16 and later with Graves Disease and Goiter. I have been on Tapazol along with Atenelol (for the Tachacardia) off and on for the past 9 years with no results. Every doc I see wants to discuss nothing but RAI or surgery. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for a few years with no success. I finally found out that I was pregnant the beginning of last year and made it to 4 months and suffered a miscarriage for no apparent reason.
Avatar n tn I forgot to say that, yes, the wrong amount of Armour can cause problems because too much thyroid hormones can cause hyperthyroidism and too little can cause hypothyroidism, but it can’t cause Graves Disease. You, either have Graves Disease or you don’t.
Avatar m tn Have you had thyroid antibodies tested? You could have either Hashimoto's or Graves Disease, but you can't know without proper testing. While Hashimoto's is, typically, associated with hypothyroidism, it's often characterized by periods of hyperthyroidism in the early stages. Graves Disease is always associated with hyperthyroidism. To test for Hashimoto's, you need Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOab) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TGab).
Avatar f tn My question is (have not seen and endocrinologist) is it possible that when i had graves disease it caused this problem. My graves disease destroyed my thyroid which turned ino hyperthyrodism. Just curious.
Avatar f tn Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (also known as chronic thyroiditis) may lead to hypothyroidism, while Gravesdisease is usually associated with hyperthyroidism.
10771583 tn?1412675389 For me, I was VERY hyperthyroid but my labs showed subclinical hypothyroidism. Weird lab results when both antibodies show up. However, you can have Graves disease with thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) and not have Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
Avatar f tn Hi SaltT, TSH is not the best indicator of thyroid hormone function, it can be used to indicate a problem if it is very high or low, but freeT4 and freeT3 are the actual thyroid hormones and are more important in determining thyroid function. The thyroid makes mostly T4 hormone, which is then converted to the active hormone T3 which is used throughout the body. Hypothyroidism is caused low T3 activity in the tissues.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with Graves disease 11 years ago. My endo prescribed Methimazole, which I was allergic to, so he told me he didn't want to prescribe me anything else because sometimes the allergy kills the thyroid. It apparently did, because all of a sudden I was hypo and I had to go on synthroid. Since then, I lost my health insurance and got handled by my PCP instead of the endo (cheaper).
Avatar m tn Have you been diagnosed with Graves Disease? Or Hashimoto's? Graves Disease is always associated with hyperthyroidism. Hashimoto's is, typically, associated with hypothyroidism, but is often characterized by hyperthyroidism in the beginning stages. Have you had antibody tests to confirm either of these diseases? To diagnose Hashimoto's, you need Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOab) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TGab).
Avatar m tn The symptoms of Graves Disease would be those of hyperthyroidism, such as sudden weight loss, sweating when others are comfortable to cool, diarrhea, hand tremors, heart palpitations (these can be present with hypothyroidism as well), rapid heart rate, irritability, mood swings, fatigue and many others.
