Common Questions and Answers about Graves disease options

graves-disease

Avatar f tn I really thought I was losing my mind, I have had this for about 4 yrs and just now was diagnosed with Graves disease. My Dr put me on Methimazole and after 3 weeks had a severe reaction and was covered head to toe with a horrible insanely itchy rash. Mr Endo told me I have a couple options radio active iodine or somthing else which he did not tell me what. My question is how has the radio active iodine worked for others?
Avatar f tn my son was a newly diagnosed "graves disease" pt. he was given tatazole tablet 5mg. to be taken after breakfast for one month, what are the side effect of tatazole, the things he have to avoid and if you can give me more/additional information about the disease. thanks!
Avatar f tn Heart pain is caused by a lack of bloodflow to the heart wall caused by blocked arteries or a thick heart wall where the blood supply has been outstripped, some types of Congenital Heart Disease (although that is also rare) can cause chest pain due to heart disease. Graves Disease can cause palpitations for some and that could be a cause for the dizziness. Unless there is a problem at the time the Holter is being run, that won't show up.

Avatar f tn I am 32, have seen my Family Dr. I was diagnosed with graves disease. I have also seen a endocrinologist who has told me is was a goiter. Im confused, I know my thyroid is getting larger. I have several symptoms but can not get a solid answer. What is the differance between a goiter and graved disease? What are the treaments for both?
Avatar f tn Okay, I have Graves disease...I had had it for almost 2 years (as I know of) I really haven't treated it at all. My doctor is an hour away and I have transportation issues....my symptoms are palpitations, shortness of breath, mood swings, hair falling out, extreme fatigue & night sweats. I also recently had a miscarriage eventhough my levels were better. My question is what can I do about this. I don't want to have RAI....
Avatar n tn Conventional treatment options for Graves' disease include: * Anti-thyroid medication: In the US: - Methimazole [brand name Tapazole] - Propylthiouracil [PTU] Approximately 30% with Graves' disease will have a remission after prolonged treatment with anti-thyroid drugs.
Avatar f tn It's likely that you have Graves' disease. However, you should have a TSI (thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin) test to confirm this. TSI is the definitive test for Graves'. Sometimes Graves' can be managed with medication. Surgery and RAI are also options. Read all you can about Graves' and discuss which options are right for you with your doctor.
Avatar m tn No, methimazole can't cure Graves Disease; nothing can. Once you have it, you have it for life, even if you have your thyroid removed or it goes into remission.
415642 tn?1207784582 I am taking advil all day long for a headache and it just does not stop it. How long have you had Graves ? What treatment options did you discuss / take ?
Avatar f tn My daughter was diagnosed with Graves disease at 15. At first her whole face was swollen and her eyes were bulging. It took 2 months to diagnose her. She is on Tapezole, which brought the T3 and T4 to about normal. Her eyes are still bulging and she is in pain from severe dry eyes. Now they want to take out her Thyroid. Then do eye surgery. Does anyone know if a thyroidectomy would help the bulging eyes? Please help!
Avatar f tn Up until July 2010 I did not know anything about thyroid much less graves disease. I am still learning more and more every day due to the hypo issues I am having as well as the eye issue I have from the graves. There are pill that the dr can give your daughter to conger react the effects of graves while you can get all of your questions asked and make an informed dicession on what to do that is best for your daughter. Get her into a ped endo for a second opinion.

Avatar f tn Loonette, thanks so much! I have read that a small number of Hashis do get the Graves eye disease. Scary, but I've had two eye exams in the past six months and both were fine. Anyway, this morning I ate my breakfast and all is fine. The weird thing is that the goiter seems to swell after taking vitamins. We just found another nodule on an ultrasound. My endo never saw the ultrsound and doesn't want to biopsy since it is only .8 cm. I am going to demand it. Thanks again.
Avatar n tn Carefully consider RAI if you have Thyroid Eye Disease - it can make the symptoms worse. My doctor didn't really push RAI at all (I have Graves and Graves Eye Disease), he was afraid it couldn't be "taken back" once done if it caused worsening eye problems. I already had enough problems in that department, couldn't imagine it being worse. RAI has its uses, but so does TT.
Avatar n tn Graves is an autoimmune disease and unfortunately for life. Controlling whether they raise or suppress is key to beating the symptoms of the disease. If you are on Levo now - your labs must be abnormal and now lean towards hypoT levels. You would feel like cr@p right now with the swinging patterns you have been on. "Once Graves.... always Graves" is the saying here. But I am positive your endo or ???
717393 tn?1234195018 Good afternoon, Went to the new endocrinologist this morning. He did an ultrasound, and said that I have two issues. Hyperthyroidism caused by Graves disease, although I'm not convinced it caused by Graves since my TSH count is low, but T3, T4 and antibodies all come back normal. I also have what appears as tumor on the upper left side of my thyroid. He gave me the two options 1. Start taking meds for the Graves, and have the tumor biopsied in two weeks and take it from there or 2.
Avatar f tn You have Graves disease with hyperthyroidism -- would consult with an endocrinologist to determine best treatment options. We often use either tapazole or treat with I-131 (radioactive iodine).
