Avatar f tn RAI is usually not done unless one has Graves Disease; it's also done following surgery if cancer is involved. Many of us have multi nodular goiter and nothing needs to be done. Quite often when one has a goiter, they also have antibodies which attack and destroy the thyroid gland.
Avatar n tn Yes, TT stands for total thyroidectomy...surgical removal of the entire thyroid gland. Do you know whay you have nodules? Do you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves' disease. Depending on the cause of the nodules, iodine supplements can make the condition worse. Were you advised by your doctor to take this? Are you taking any thyroid meds?
877337 tn?1249844450 Graves' disease may present clinically with one of the following characteristic signs: * exophthalmos (protuberance of one or both eyes) * a non-pitting edema (pretibial myxedema), with thickening of the skin usually found on the lower extremities * fatigue, weight loss with increased appetite, and other symptoms of hyperthyroidism * rapid heart beats * muscular weakness The two signs that are truly 'diagnostic' of Graves' disease (i.e.
Avatar f tn It may be worth having a second opinion from an endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid before committing to surgery. You have hyperthyroidism with increased uptake, this is usually either toxic nodular thyroid or Graves' disease. Prior to surgery this hyperthyroidism may need to be corrected to decrease risks associated with surgery and anesthesia.
Avatar m tn How do I determine if I need goiter surgery? What questions do I ask my doctor to determine if I need goiter surgery? I have developed a goiter (I think its large, but I don't know what makes a large goiter.) I went to the hospital today and the doctor said I need surgery to remove it, but I don't want to jump into surgery if I don't need it. I am an American living in Croatia temporarily. I don't speak Croatian, so communication with the doctor is very limited.
Avatar f tn My question is (have not seen and endocrinologist) is it possible that when i had graves disease it caused this problem. My graves disease destroyed my thyroid which turned ino hyperthyrodism. Just curious.
Avatar f tn Thank you all for your advice. I guess there isn't really much they can do anymore at this point. My insurance wants me to get RAI, but with the budding TED, my doctor and I are against it. They won't cover the decompression or other eye surgery for me because they think it's "cosmetic" surgery. I was actually told "I'm sorry, Ma'am. We don't cover a surgery like that. You should just try to accept yourself, and not be so vain.
Avatar f tn Similarly, sarcoidosis of the thyroid gland may develop in response to an established thyroid disorder including Gravesdisease, nodular goiter, and thyroid cancer. Patients with Gravesdisease may also have concomitant conditions of sarcoidosis affecting the lungs. Patients with systemic sarcoidosis may also develop sarcoid lesions in various organs including the thyroid gland.
Avatar f tn Jen, first of all dont let the doctor scare you. What was the % for 24 hour scan? The TSI antibodies are present in 90% of the patients which help to discriminate between Grave's and nodular toxic goiter; in many cases the Grave's disease results in uniform and symmetrical thyroid swelling, http://static.*************.org/v/0.11.3.0.6833.29/images/comprofiler/plug_profilegallery/11459/pg_1727852508.
Avatar f tn I am a 25 y/o female diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at 16 and later with Graves Disease and Goiter. I have been on Tapazol along with Atenelol (for the Tachacardia) off and on for the past 9 years with no results. Every doc I see wants to discuss nothing but RAI or surgery. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for a few years with no success. I finally found out that I was pregnant the beginning of last year and made it to 4 months and suffered a miscarriage for no apparent reason.
20874021 tn?1556489645 The thyroid scintigraphy scan revealed mediastinal thyroid mass. The second case underwent total thyroidectomy due to Gravesdisease and TSH level was low after surgery. At postoperative seventh year, patients were admitted to our Endocrinology Division due to persistent hyperthyroidism and CT scan revealed forgotten thyroid at mediastinum.
Avatar f tn I have Graves disease and a goiter. Was given the option of pills which could effect other parts or surgery to have them both removed. How do you determine the right way to go. They want my answer soon.
Avatar n tn I did have a large goiter before Graves disease treatment. Could the nodule have been there all along and is just now apparent now that the goiter has decreased in size? Thank you for an response.
110220 tn?1309306861 I was diagnosed with Graves disease and I have read everything regard the disease and what I find most fearful is the eye issues that can result with Graves Disease. many articles indicate only 30% of people with Graves disease have issues with their eyes. Is this correct? I am seeing an eye doctor in a couple of weeks? I do feel grit in one of my eyes from time to time. This is pretty nerve racking.
Avatar n tn I had a multi nodule goiter. Before surgery I was on 50 mcg Levi. I was so hyper I could almost walk across ceilings. Can you have Graves' disease after thyroidectomy. Having horrible itchy skin, ear eczema and hyperpigmentation all over my skin. Damn Drs only want to run tsh. I tremor all the time and my legs are so weak. They take my Levi up and my tah goes low. Please help. Don't know where to turn. Graves on my family but no doctor will listen.
932747 tn?1247616635 From what I have read thyroid problems have been associated with Graves disease. Cancer is associated with toxins in our enviroment. You might want to get a book on Natural Healing which will tell you what vitamins and supplements you should take to help with your problem. Juicing has shown success in treating cancer. You might want to consider a diet high in raw fruits and vegetables to give your body the nutrients it needs to heal itself.
Avatar f tn I am glad I found this site, I found out today that I have graves disease, I also have a multinodular goiter and I had a thyroid scan and it showed a cold area, so I have to have a biopsy. I am so scared, I have never really been sick and now all of a sudden I get this. Has anyone had a biopsy on a nodule and how long does it take for the results to get back? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Avatar n tn Goiter is common in people with Graves (hyperthyroid) disease and in people with Hashimoto's disease (hypothryoid). Personally, I wouldn't do surgery unless, of course, the goiter gets too big and it affects our quality of life, or if my nodules grow bigger. I take meds (Synthroid) for my Hashimoto's. It has helped tremendously. People with Graves supposedly have abnormally low TSH. People with Hashi have high TSH. Supposedly.
Avatar f tn Hi, So you have a goiter and Hashimoto's not Graves right? Just wondering because you made the eyes pulling away reference which I thought was only a Graves condition. Also, I am now in the process of the whole RAI/WBS thing...you can look at my posts and journal for that cuz I am soooo tired right now. From another post I made... I had a goiter for several years (2004) before it's removal in 2009. It was a watch and see approach.
