I was diagnosed with Graves disease 11 years ago. My endo prescribed Methimazole, which I was allergic to, so he told me he didn't want to prescribe me anything else because sometimes the allergy kills the thyroid. It apparently did, because all of a sudden I was hypo and I had to go on synthroid. Since then, I lost my health insurance and got handled by my PCP instead of the endo (cheaper).
Sorry, Graves Disease is an autoimmune disease that is life long, though there are treatments for it that can allow you to live a normal life.
What symptoms prompted you to get tested for thyroid issues? What tests were done to diagnose Graves?
There's no reason that, once properly treated, you shouldn't be able to play sports again..

My daughter was diagnosed with Graves on June 4th. She is 6. Luckily, I'm a teacher and have been able to stay at home with her the past couple of months to get this under control. I feel like our lives have been turned upside down. We started out with a sore throat and a diagnosis from an ENT of Thyroiditis......We ended up seeing a pediatric endocrinologist in an emergency visit because of her heart rate. We've been on methimazole since.
I've never heard of anyone dying from Graves Disease, but you haven't given nearly enough information. I don't understand the "post 8 months"; what does that mean?
What was the stent in her arm for?
Was your friend being treated with anti-thyroid medication? Did she have untreated cancer?
I found out I had graves disease in 1992. I was treated for my hyperthyroid with the medicine PTU for 2 years. I was good for 12 years (2004) then took PTU again for 1 !/2 years good until now (2009) I think had ovarian cancer and the chemotherapy and stress probably triggered it.
Now I am back for tests and probably will go on methimazole this time. What the previous post said about treatments is what I know. It always takes a little time to balance, but then I feel much better.
Graves is an autoimmune disease and unfortunately for life. Controlling whether they raise or suppress is key to beating the symptoms of the disease.
If you are on Levo now - your labs must be abnormal and now lean towards hypoT levels. You would feel like cr@p right now with the swinging patterns you have been on.
"Once Graves.... always Graves" is the saying here. But I am positive your endo or ???
A family friend recently passed from a disease that the family is keeping hush, hush. I want to be a doctor and it is plaguing me that I don't understand how she could get sick so fast and die (in the course of 4-5 months). I heard something about a thyroid disorder which lead me to Graves' disease. However, my mother said when she saw her, she had swollen abdomen and feet. That pointed me to malnutrition, kwashiorkor, but the swollen feet thing put me to diabetes and water retention.
Have you been tested for thyroid antibodies to make sure you do, in fact, have Graves disease and are not simply in a hyper phase of Hashimoto's? Both Graves and Hashimoto's are autoimmune.
While Graves is always connected with hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's is most often connected with hypothyroidism, however it's not uncommon for one to have periods of hyperthyroidism in the beginning stages.
You should ask for thyroid antibody tests.

While I would have to do some checking around on this can you post the reason for the removal? - Is it for Graves disease?
Has your doctor told you, you have Graves Disease? Yes, your TSH is extremely low and your FT4 is extremely high, indicating that you are hyper, but your antibody tests indicate Hashimoto's. TSI is the definitive test for Graves Disease and I don't see that listed.
Have you been put on antithyroid med?
Did I develop neutropenia from the Graves disease and how do I stop the neutropenia from getting worse? Also, what are some things that I should avoid as a result of my neutropenia? I am glad I found this site, I found out today that I have graves disease, I also have a multinodular goiter and I had a thyroid scan and it showed a cold area, so I have to have a biopsy. I am so scared, I have never really been sick and now all of a sudden I get this. Has anyone had a biopsy on a nodule and how long does it take for the results to get back? Looks like Graves' disease based on the significant elevation in T3 however to confirm this a TSI blood test or I-123 nuclear uptake would be required.

Hello. I'm 36 and I am almost 9 weeks pregnant. I have Graves' disease and had radiation treatment back in 2009. I hadn't been taking my thyroxine constantly for a few months as I was super stressed and now that I am pregnant haven't missed a dose. My thyroid levels are still very high and I'm worried that this will affect my baby's brain development/IQ levels. Has anyone else had similar experiences? I'm scared and worried.
iam apatient who suffers graves disease. My question is : Although I am almost 4 months on Carbamizole treatment 60 mg + Taking inderal ( propanalol), but the levels of my T4 & T3 are still high and the levels of TSH is less than 0.01.
what do you think , should i sstop the medication and think of the other allternatives like the radioactive iodine or surgical removal?
