Common Questions and Answers about Graves disease and dry eyes

graves-disease

Avatar n tn You could just be dehydrated, but my first graves symptom were dry, groopy eyes and tension in my forehead. Do you have any other symptoms? Increased appetite? Feel jumpy? Tired? Weight loss? family history of thyroid disease? You could always go see your doctor- they have simple ways of testing or just a small blood test. Have a loved one watch your eyes as you follow their finger up and down, if you eyelid lags behind the top of your eyeball it's eyelid lag and a sigh of graves disease.
Avatar f tn Hi - I am undergoing tests for Graves of the eyes. My eyes are so dry and they buldge. Are you a smoker? Smoking makes the eye disease worse. It is very common to have Graves of the eyes if you have Graves Thyroid disease. My doctor told me that he would treat me with prednisone to get the swelling behind my eyes down and last resort would be surgery. You probably need to research an eye doctor that specializes in Graves. Where do you live? My doctor is at Rush Hospital in Chicago.
Avatar n tn My eyes bother me often and I have trouble making eye contact. My aniexty seems to stem from problems with my eyes as well as some Panic attack like symptoms. I am on Thyroid medication for low thyroid but I seem to have many of the symtoms of over active thyroid. Could I have Graves disease even if my eyes don't protrude and my thyroid level is ok now? It seems that I have to keep upping my thyroid medication to ease my eye problems but I often have too much aniext.
Avatar f tn My thyroid tests are tsh 2.5 t4 10 and t3 3.7 Clearly t3 and 4 are at low end. My eyes feel dry. My doctor wants.me on the tapazole because of my high TSI. My TSI was 12 until I went hypo a few weeks ago. Now it is 60. Do.you think I should be off tapazole? Will my t4 go up if I. Off tapazole? I don't feel great.
550622 tn?1247656720 The redness usually goes away, but the dry eye might stay around awhile. I take flaxseed oil everyday which helps as well as staying well hydrated- but eye drops are a way of life. It does get better, my eyes function almost normally but wearing contacts is very hard and my eyes are usually more dry the next day and flying doesn't help matters, so I use more drops during flights.
Avatar m tn I've had symptoms of dry eyes, random itching, tiredness, and dry skin for no apparent reason since February. In April, my eyes started swelling up severely on the upper lids, and I had daily pain behind my eyes and headaches. After trips to multiple doctors, I was finally diagnosed with thyroid eye disease due to my hashimotos thyroiditis that I have known about and taken meds for about 12 years. My meds adjusted were adjusted about 2 1/2 weeks ago.
558632 tn?1303471125 Thanks, i did not take it last night and will avoid until i see endo. just trying to get relief for dry eyes. I tried restasis and hated it. couldn't use it, stung to long and had lingering effects.
Avatar f tn She is on Tapezole, which brought the T3 and T4 to about normal. Her eyes are still bulging and she is in pain from severe dry eyes. Now they want to take out her Thyroid. Then do eye surgery. Does anyone know if a thyroidectomy would help the bulging eyes? Please help!
Avatar f tn They are mostly smokers and most problems with your eyes develop within 6 months of your treatment of Graves disease. Anything is possible and anyone could develop problems with their eyes but the majority does not. The longer you have had Graves disease without having problems with your eyes the less likely it is to happen.
458072 tn?1291415186 Well, I have started having another problem. I am getting dry eyes. I have never had this before, so maybe you can shed some light. Is this associated with the thyroid as well. I am starting to think that even hang nails are a result of hypothyroidism....(funny, don't you think). Seriously, I was reading an article that says that the T3 and T4 hormones are in every cell of our blood. That must be why it affects so many different things.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with Graves Disease a few months after the sudden loss of my oldest daughter. This was in Nov. of 2004. I have since had 4 eye operations to try and aid with the bulging eyes. They do appear somewhat improved. Not quite so bulgy, but what makes my life miserable is the constant tearing and irritation. I have tried several different kinds of drops without any satisfaction. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, is there any magic treatment out there that will help.??
Avatar f tn I have an appt on feb 19th,since I have been on the tapizole my pulse has been down, and my symptoms seemed under control.lately my symptoms have worsned although I take my meds everyday on time,my panic attacks have increased,I have been having muscle aches, headaches, sinus problems, sore throats occasionally.also my goiter seems to getting wider and smaller, and my eyes are always dry and they don't close all the way at night, and chest pains at times.
Avatar n tn No, I did not have graves. My TT was for thyroid cancer. It just seems odd that I am sitting at my desk and the papers are all blurry. If I blink a few times it gets better, but still not normal. It started yesterday and is still a problem today. Thanks for your suggestion. I should just make an apointment to be sure. I just thought that maybe this would go away on its own.
1470552 tn?1300605907 Hi, Thank you I do have dry mouth alot. I will try the drops, also i made appt to see a eye Dr. Iam way over due for a eye exam.
Avatar f tn I was diagnoised with Graves' Disease in 2009. My TSH level was low and my t3 and t4 were high. I had all the symptoms of hyper. It was awful. They did an uptake and found abnormal findings. Was told I needed the RAI-131. Like a good patient I did this and was basically told my only other option was the anti-thyroid meds which could cause many problems and that scared me or surgery and so did that. So I took the radioactive iodine. My gut instinct told me no, but I did anyway.
558632 tn?1303471125 I have a slight protrusion of right eye and swelling upper and lower around eyes, and of course the grittiness. I wasn't sure if it was assumed that i would go on my own or not. or if it is even necessary since i have not experienced any double vision?
Avatar n tn I have had steroids for my eyes and and tapazole nothing has worked. I have toxic nodoles along with Graves disease. I have changed my diet and tried different things what do you suggest. I'm not sleeping, I have gained most of my weight back with increased heart beat. What can I do.
Avatar f tn Does the surgery mean that I am cured of Graves or what? Nothing I read seems to address this directly.I still suffer from the protruding eyes and tiredness. All my levels appear normal. It doesnt help that I am perimenapausal either.
Avatar f tn I saw the same Dr. again in Sept..mine is rather slight for now, but he noticed it, and my eyes will feel dry and irritated. I have Hashimoto's..nothing was mentioned about Graves in connection with my eye. I haven't been told what my new blood tests say yet. I'm kinda wondering if the eye thing may be result of over medicating.
415642 tn?1207784582 I am on medication for Graves Disease and now my eyes have headed for the worse . I think it is called Thyroid Eye Disease ? May be wrong on that. I posted the other night , but I had another question for the experts and people who have already been through this .. Does medication cure this ? Or is this going to get worse as it goes on ? My eyes are really red , running water, start to close as the sun hits them, as well as the starring thing is going on .
