Graves disease and double vision

Common Questions and Answers about Graves disease and double vision

graves-disease

Avatar m tn m not sure if this helps at all, but I experience double vision because I have Graves Disease ( thyroid condition) and I also have Graves Eye Disease. The Eye Disease made my eyes swell which caused the double vision. As recommened by michelle, an opthalmologist is whom you should contact. The eyes are so sensitive and if you are experiencing this problem, a call to this type of Doc. is very important.
Avatar n tn I recently was sent to an opto-neurologist and he did a myathenis graves tests and MRI and all came back negative. However, since July the double vision has got worse. I now wear 30 prisms in my glasses. It is so frustrating because there are no answers. The MRI showed no problems with muscles that would indicate thyroid eye disease or anything else. Everything comes up fine. I was wondering if anyone else had similar issues and what they might have tried.
Avatar f tn After about 18 months (based on when my first symptoms showed, not from diagnosis), my Thyroid Eye disease gradually reversed. First the double vision went away and then over time the bulging and tearing decreased. I'm told that there is a possibility that it can retrun but I wanted to share this and hope others experience the same thing.
Avatar n tn he could have graves disease? i am suffering from graves with similar symptoms without the weight loss I am atypical of this symptom (of course) and have gained weight. they will start him on meds to help out his levels back to normal.
Avatar f tn now I have double vision all the time. very puffy eyelids top and bottm and I notice my eyes are crossed at times. My Dr again says its just a part of having graves disease. Can you please give me some direction? Is there any hope for my eyes. I've even tried several eye Dr's. MRI, US, Ct Scans. all I'm told shows nothing except it's associated with my thyroid disese. Please help me. Thank you. Please help me.
Avatar n tn I have/had graves disease, and prior to my treatment, I met with a Neuro Ophthalmologist and luckily for me, it had not progressed to the eyes prior to my surgery.
534194 tn?1213416842 But my eye problems havent worsened and I have had Graves and Hyperthyroidism for about 4 years and only diagnosed last year when it got severe and my FT3 and FT4 very high..
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with Graves disease in 2001 and subsequently treated with radioactive iodine in 2003. Since being treated, I was placed on Synthroid. Soon after I developed the "eye stare" and moderate lid retraction bilaterally. Throughout the years, my eyes seemed to have gone back to their normal state. Approximately two years ago, my physician switched me to armour thyroid (I felt great on it).
Avatar f tn What kind of eye problems do you have? Thyroid eye disease symptoms first start as a lot of tearing and a dry, gritting feeing in the eyes. Later symptoms include the bulging eyeballs that most have heard about, and sometimes, double vision. It isn't normally associated with poor vision unless caused by double vision or pressure on the optic nerve(which is very rare).
Avatar f tn orbital decompression to remove some of the bony eye socket or fat deposits (which is what causes the eye muscle inflamation), a second surgery to correct double vision if present, and a third surgery to correct any eyelid defects (often with Graves Orbitopathy lids will retract and cause more of the white of the eye to be exposed than should be, which is what causes the dryness, grittiness and tearing). The two diseases are treated separately.
Avatar m tn Saturday I was flying a radio-control airplane when suddenly I had horizontally-displaced double vision. I was able to land the plane by closing my right eye, and had a slight headache above my left eye. The double vision lasted less then 5 minutes and the headache was gone also. I had a similar incident in April 2012 while watching a baseball game. This time the double vision was vertically displaced.
Avatar n tn I had mild Thyroid eye disease (TED), which was causing swelling, grittiness, pain behind eyes, & bulging. I didn't have double vision, but that is also a sign and is something not to ignore. I would find a specialist if you are still having problems I went on prednisone for 2 months during Radioactive iodine treatment for Graves' to keep the eyes from getting worse. Being on steroids was Awful, but my eyes do feel better.
Avatar n tn re right that I might have the onset of TED because I have had severe trouble with my eyes lately, so much so that it feels like my eyes are just going to fall out of my head and my vision is double sometimes along with getting severe migraines. I have been changing my diet as I read more about this disease. Seems like I have every symptom on the list. I'm a very holistic person and I would prefer to correct this naturally if possible, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn I am not a doctor but I will tell you that I had my throid removed a year ago (graves disease) and I still have lid retraction. If TSI nad Trab antibodies are normal, and your daughter has still bulging eyes, then thyroid surgery cannot offer a lot. If there are these specific antibodies, then yes. Maybe surgery is a sollution. In general, It may take three years for the eyes to go back, even if you are eythyroid.
Avatar f tn I was at the eye doctor today and he suggested that i consider getting orbital decompression surgery. I have graves disease and it was treated in 2005. My eyes over the last 2 years have buldged and i feel like everyone is looking at them not me. I can tell that its still getting worse but i have no vision change. they hurt and get dry often but i still have good vision. should i get the surgery before something happenes or what untill my vision starts to go bad?
Avatar f tn t get into a specialist till Feb. I have had symptoms for mths heart palpitations double and blurry vision. Wondering if I am gonna get worse before Feb and is that level high ? Oh and weight gain ??

They NY Eye Infirmatory has not lots and lots of tests on her and says they cant do anything to her on the eye like surgery until her thyroid #s are low.
Avatar n tn You can tell my eye swells on and off and the eyeballs looks the other way and it doesnt look normal. i see blurry and double vision from that eye. I have been given Metimazole to take but now im seeing cloudy in both eyes. i lose my balance because i cant see straight and now i see cloudy/blurry. Please help and provide some advice. what should i do. i was told i can get some special glasses to help me with my double vision..
558632 tn?1303471125 I have a slight protrusion of right eye and swelling upper and lower around eyes, and of course the grittiness. I wasn't sure if it was assumed that i would go on my own or not. or if it is even necessary since i have not experienced any double vision?
Avatar n tn I have both Graves and TED. The endocrinologist is treating me with Methimazole and Propanalol. 10 mg each daily. He wants me off Methimazole soon and do RAI. Since Methimazole can cause agranulocytosis it is a concern to him. I am on a 10 mg of each daily. However, the only blood tests he will order is TSH and free T4. My ophthalmologist ordered a 10 week regimen of steriod infusions for TED, but it didnt help my proptosis or double vision.
620695 tn?1221490231 I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in May. I have gone Hypo & am now on 100mcg of Synthroid & ?? Cytomel. I have been on this dosage since Aug. 2 and am still suffering with extreme fluid retension on my face, fatiguem weight gain, & vision problems. I am most worried about my vision. Besides constantly 'weeping' due to the fluid, I am having great difficulty focusing.
Avatar f tn Prisms can be incorporated into the glasses or stuck on all the back surface of the lens "fresnel prisms" Tape won't cut it.
Avatar f tn now my neck seems swollen especiay the right side and my left eye seems swollen, I have double vision at times and the sun hurts my eyes, my vision is blurry and that is being kind, I keep trying to get into my GP but it is school physical time and he is backed up until Sept 4, how unreal is that? My eye doctor retired and I am worried that something is going on different with my thyroid. any ideas from anyone else. Thank you.
Avatar f tn Thank you for responding. I knew that I could not take Methmazole during pregnancy and I would need to be switched to a PTU. I had read before also that the eye problems was around 5% and mostly smokers but I just wanted to double check. I haven't had any eye problems and never knew anyone that did have eye problems with Graves Disease, but it is a scary thing to think about!
