Avatar f tn How is going without the medicine? I am in the same boat. I stopped taking my medicine in Dec and feel GREAT. But when I went back to the doctor she was pissed and put me back on the meds. I then had an allergic reation to the Methimazole. She now wants me to have radioactive iodine treatment, and Im just not sure that is the right answer. Did you find anything about alternative theraapies?
Avatar f tn my sister has hd graves disease for about a year she does not take med. right she has not gotten blood work for about four months she just keeps taking med because she has refills she is getting really crazy she thinks people are trying to kill her coul this be from graves disease This discussion is related to TSH Levels at 3.75.
Avatar f tn In the USA there is a tendency to use more I-131, but in many other countries (and in our office) we often use anti-thyroid meds such as methimazole for Graves and consider surgery for treatment as well. If it is a hot nodule, then would recommend either I-131 or surgery (w/ an expert thyroid surgeon).
1674106 tn?1403379490 * Anti-thyroid medication (first choice for treatment in uncomplicated Graves' disease): Methimazole (Tapazole) Propylthiouracil (PTU) Carbimazole (Neomercazole) - not available in the US Anti-thyroid medications decrease the level of thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The goal with anti-thyroid drug treatment is to decrease the thyroid antibodies and induce remission.
Avatar m tn I have recently been diagnosed with graves disease. I dont like the traditional treatments my ex endo gave me - radiation, cutting it out, or dangerous drugs. Doe anyone know of alternative treatments that really work?
Avatar m tn I've recently been diagnosed with Graves. Unfortunately I don't have insurance and can't afford it. I'm stuck with a doctor whom I don't feel has my best interest at heart. My last visit with my PA (who pointed out concerns that prompted testing) I was told my levels were low, the same day, saw my endo doc and she tells me (from same lab results, that my levels were normal) and immediately suggested removal as soon as possible.
Avatar f tn hi I am 37 years old and have hyper thyroid. I went to the doctor cause I was feeling really ill at least he is old school and tested for thyroid straight away. And sent me to a specialist. Well, it turn out I am now on Betta blocker 10g 3 times a day to get my heart rate down. Cholesterol ,thyroid and anxiety tablets I was told to take this for three months and then to leave it to see what happens. Well it just got worse after I left the tablets.
Avatar f tn Dr. Lupo , is there anything that will help this disorder. I have Graves Disease , took RAI in Oct of 08 then a few months later my eyes began swelling and tearing. I have been told there is nothing that can be done. My Eye Doctor says it is a unpredictable disease and will see me again in two months. Is there anything I can do at home , other than tear drops and wait? My Blood work showed TSH at 0.0 and my Free T4 at 1.85 . I know this means I am still Hyper. What should normal levels be?
Avatar n tn s an autoimmune disease that unfortunately always plagues you in one shape or another even after the radiated iodine treatment. Since thyroid disease runs in my family, and I have borderline hyperthyroid tendencies, I always keep an eye on the thyroid board on MedHelp. The folks there are very knowledgeable. You may want to pop in there for some advice as well. Both diseases (FM and Graves symptoms overlap) Make sure you stop back in both places. Take care.
Avatar f tn I really thought I was losing my mind, I have had this for about 4 yrs and just now was diagnosed with Graves disease. My Dr put me on Methimazole and after 3 weeks had a severe reaction and was covered head to toe with a horrible insanely itchy rash. Mr Endo told me I have a couple options radio active iodine or somthing else which he did not tell me what. My question is how has the radio active iodine worked for others?
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with graves disease and had the radioactive treatment to destroy it a few years back. I have had a few times where I did not have my meds for a week at a time. Is it normal to feel so tired and cranky? Also I took Zirtec for my allergies and I felt like I was cloudy and just wanted to sleep and tightness in my chest..... I am currently on 137 mcg of Levothyroxine.
Avatar f tn There are no alternative therapies for Graves Disease. You can try taking anti-thyroid medications, but those are usually not long term options. The reason some people feel worse after thyroidectomy is because their doctors won't prescribe adequate replacement medication to alleviate the hypothyroidism that results from the TT or RAI.
Avatar f tn I am a 25 y/o female diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at 16 and later with Graves Disease and Goiter. I have been on Tapazol along with Atenelol (for the Tachacardia) off and on for the past 9 years with no results. Every doc I see wants to discuss nothing but RAI or surgery. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for a few years with no success. I finally found out that I was pregnant the beginning of last year and made it to 4 months and suffered a miscarriage for no apparent reason.
Avatar n tn I have had steroids for my eyes and and tapazole nothing has worked. I have toxic nodoles along with Graves disease. I have changed my diet and tried different things what do you suggest. I'm not sleeping, I have gained most of my weight back with increased heart beat. What can I do.
Avatar f tn Last year I was diagnosed with Graves disease and had a radioactive ablation done in April. Sometime around March of 2009, my eyelids became puffy and my eyes were usually watery. I called my Endocrinologist and asked if this was related to my thyroid and she sugg. I visit my Primary Care Dr. I did and he followed an allergy path. I finally went to an allergist who said that allergies may be playing a role, it was not the primary cause.
Avatar n tn It should be pointed out that, especially in the US literature, the term ‘hashitoxicosis’ is sometimes used to describe an autoimmune thyroid disease overlap syndrome of Graves’ and Hashimoto’s disease. In this article the term is strictly limited to the ‘leakage’ symptoms of active Hashimoto’s disease." *** Excerpts from the book: Thyroid Disorders and Related Health Conditions by James M. Avatar m tn I know that nothing is guaranteed, but from what others have told me about the standard treatment (Interf/Riba.) it seems like this treatment would be a living nightmare. What about the new study out of Mass. Univ. (2/08) that suggests grapefruit (narengin extract) may help to cure this disease? Does Milk Thistle help to reduce the symptoms? I have developed Angiomas on my lower leg, and I have bad headaches. Are these symptoms of the disease, and has this happened to anyone else?
Avatar f tn Graves' disease is hyper. Levo is not a treatment for hyper, it's a treatment for hypo. Do you remember which test results were the basis for your diagnosis of Graves'? Is your doctor testing FREE T3 and FREE T4 or just TSH? How long ago did you drop back down to 100 mcg? The thyroid can burn itself out. It's also possible to have the antibodies for both Graves' (hyper) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (ultimately hypo).
499534 tn?1328704178 They have an alternative I hope? I am still waiting for my stupid ins co. to approve and schedule. Stupid %@@ insurance companies!!!! I sent you a message before i saw this. You were hyper first weren't you? did you have graves as well?
Avatar f tn my son was a newly diagnosed "graves disease" pt. he was given tatazole tablet 5mg. to be taken after breakfast for one month, what are the side effect of tatazole, the things he have to avoid and if you can give me more/additional information about the disease. thanks!
Avatar n tn If your TPO is at the level you say then you have an Autoimmune Disease (Graves) and eventually you will have no choice but permanant treatment as Graves is very hard to treat. In the meantime....keep doing what your Doctor says BUT research all you can on Graves Disease and Hyperthyroidism as this is something you will need to know eventually. Dont go for RAI or permanant treatment until you know for sure that yr thyroid is uncontrollable.
Avatar f tn I don't have Graves, so I can't answer your questions, but I know there are several on here who do have Graves and will be able to help you. What I can do, is to wish you the best of luck, no matter what decision you make.
Avatar f tn My fiance' was diagnosed with Graves Disease late last year. Something we did not expect was him having Aortic Stenosis. Graves Disease causes numerous symptoms so we thought it was the disease causing his heart problems. He just took the treatment for the Graves so it's going to be a month or so before the treatment starts to show some results. He has another test scheduled next week with an Interventional Cardiologist.
