Common Questions and Answers about Glucose vs insulin

glucose

Avatar n tn I personally firmly believe the study report to be accurate and that the pork insulin vs. human insulin to not have anything to do with loss of warning symptoms. Also, if you look back on how technology has changed, the advent of human insulins came about as glucometers were becoming available and diabetics were able to tighten up glucose controls so lows started happening more often.
Avatar f tn I would say that there could be a relation yes, at least theoretically, but an endocrinologist would be able to answer this question correctly.
Avatar f tn Just to add, I also have never had an abnormal blood glucose but severe insulin resistance and pre diabetes which was confirmed on a oral glucose tolerance test (with insulin also tested).
Avatar n tn I use a sliding scale of Humalog at mealtimes and I use 14 units of Lantis each evening. Lantis is a 24 cylce insulin or a long acting insulin where Humalog is short term or short acting insulin. But this just shows you that different people have different needs. Before I used Lantis I used to use NPH-which is a shorter long acting inuslin-more like 8 hours. Have you tried giving your Novolin before you eat?
Avatar n tn re feeling better and are relatively healthy then these glucose and insulin values should be taken with a grain of salt. You would think that if anything, your glucose levels should be higher than normal if you have OSA or UARS, since your stress responses are by definition elevated. Your glucose levels after the challenge are lower than normal, with low insulin levels as well.
806995 tn?1265823176 My glucose level are on the high side (6.5, 5.2, 6.1 mmol/l at -1, 1, and 4 weeks of TX respectively). Hence, I suspect I'm insulin resistent. I'm genotype 1 and have also HIV. At 4 weeks I only had a 0.23 log drop in VL. I may well be a non-responder, and perhaps it is related to a possible IR. In November 2008 the results of a double blind test was published, where IR geno 1 HCV where treated with additional Metformin to suppress the IR. It worked, but mainly for women and fat people.
Avatar f tn Insulin reduces glucose [blood sugar] levels not elevate. Keep in mind many things elevate glucose levels; improper diet, lack of exercise, excessive body weight, even stress. Test times: 1. - Lantus - before dosing to see your beginning day level 2. - Preprandial - right before you eat to get a baseline measurement 3. - Postprandial - 2-3 hours following a meal. This will tell you how the foods you ate affected your glucose level. Also important to dose Lantus at the same time each day.
Avatar f tn m not talking about medication but about the lifestyle changes one must undertake in order to prevent the roller coaster glucose levels. Without knowing your background or what you're doing to control and manage your diabetes a few questions comes to mind. 1. Have you taken a diabetes class? If not check with your local hospital whether they offer one. Most do. Your doctor may know of one too. Here you can get a basic understanding of how to control and manage your diabetes. 2.
519736 tn?1253986826 thanx for your quick reply. I did have black coffee right before the test. I have hypothyroidism. It was a new Endo I saw last June that ordered the blood work. He did not inform me of the insulin of 109 until August. And he told me I was "becoming insulin resistant". My glucose was normal. I'm confused. Are insulin and blood sugar the same thing?
Avatar n tn The type 1 diabetic has a more damaged pancreas than the type 2 diabetic person, but both are equally responsible for controlling their glucose levels, and how well they do that is what ends up defining their overall health. If either one lets glucose levels run high, then complications such as kidney damage or eye damage or nerve damage can happen. But both should be equally able to keep glucose levels close to the normal range if they test often and take appropriate medications.
Avatar m tn Hello mrvacation This is off topic but you may want to check this out about your labs I was reading your lab and you are high in Glucose you may also want to have your doctor order an insulin test My glucose is 103 and from what CoWriter has written about on this forum and others you may be insulin resistant.
Avatar f tn I have found several sites and printed out one sample to discuss with my diabetes support group last night. The question that could not be answered was this: if our bodies are producing insulin but the meds are blocking its absorption, how is it that manufactured insulin CAN be absorbed or successfully used by the cells?
Avatar n tn eat low carb and lots of exercise.
233616 tn?1312787196 In types 1 and 2 (insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus, somatomedin-1 increases the sensitivity to insulin and improves glucose utilisation. Experimental studies indicate that IGF-1 has a role in nerve tissue metabolism, and in humans may contribute to healing of injured nerve tissue.
Avatar m tn how much water do you usually consumed on a daily basis and have you noticed an increased in thirst? Usually when your body doesn't produce enough insulin, then the overabundant amount of glucose that circulate in your blood will increase the blood's osmotic gradient...thus causing your brain to create a thirst sensation in order to receive more water to help dilute the blood's concentration.
179856 tn?1333547362 I was concerned about this during TX as my blood glucose was often a little elevated. Post TP I had to take insulin but glucose returned to normal whan I got off the steroids. After TX, and subsequent relapse, I got an insulin test and computed HOMA score as 2.8. The problem is that I could not find any references to what this meant. What is too high, what is too low, etc. I hope the info here will shed a little more light for me.
Avatar n tn Glucose rise with age? No. I don't know of anyone who consistently hits the same fasting number every single time. Fasting levels between 70 (some say 72) and 100 are considered good. Keep in mind the optimum number is in the middle. The closer you are to 70 or 100 you run the risk. Nutrition and exercise are the keys to a healthy non-diabetic body.
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, but I think the way it works is that your body is reacting to the surge of glucose and produces insulin. It may produce too much insulin to cover that glucose, which may be causing your liver to dump out even more glucose to cover it. You don't talk about your symptoms at all, so you don't say what caused you to get the GTT done. Are you having symptoms of low blood sugars? Again, this is just a guess.
1033523 tn?1258035082 Normally there are no antibodies to insulin. If you have IgG and IgM antibodies against insulin, your body reacts as if the insulin is foreign. This may make insulin less effective, or neutralize it. Normal values are 5-20 mcU/mL while fasting; values may differ per laboratory. Check your lab results paperwork for the exact ranges. As far as daily testing, it's to early to tell until the doctor exams your test results. Good luck and let us know everything goes.
Avatar n tn When you exercise your muscles take in the glucose from your blood stream without needing insulin. It has something to do with adrenalin, but I can't explain it very well. So if you don't change your basal rates when you exercise, you will get lows because your body is getting more insulin than it needs.
Avatar m tn If you take insulin you may be taking too much for the amount of food you are eating. As insulin helps the glucose get to the cells and tissue. If you are not taking insulin your body may be releasing a large amount of insulin in response to a meal high in carbohydrates. You need to find a balance as hypoglycemia can cause you to serious problems. I would talk to your dr.
6452556 tn?1381422100 So all of a sudden when you start taking glyburide, enough insulin is released to push glucose into you bodies cells. Therefore, any excess glucose that is taken up into cells that is not immediately needed for energy is stored in the form of fat for later use, hence weight gain.
5584884 tn?1370371308 Good looking blood numbers vs. feeling terrible. Appreciate any feedback, suggestions, common issues, and help. Thanks.
468796 tn?1220029445 Fasting glucose is normal if under 100) my insulin level was 151!!! Ideally fasting insulin should be no higher than 10, but my doctor considers anything under 20 good. Anyway, having high insulin circulating in your body is the first step towards Type 2 diabetes. Right now your blood glucose is normal, however having high insulin is an indication that your cells are becoming resistant to taking in the insulin which in turns lower your glucose level.
