Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that can develop in some women late in pregnancy (usually after the 24th week). Women who develop gestational diabetes do not have diabetes before becoming pregnant. The oral glucose tolerance test involves quickly drinking a sweetened liquid (called Glucola), which contains 50 g of glucose.
Avatar f tn I have had my first glucose test and it came back as being abnormal and my doctor has sent me for an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. With everything that's going on in this pregnancy I forgot to ask the doctor if this would mean that I would definately have Gestational Diabetes. Can anyone help???
383382 tn?1323487391 Glucose Tolerance Test Around 24-28 weeks of pregnancy your doctor will likely want to screen you for gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that may develop during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes is distinguished from other types of diabetes because it occurs during pregnancy, it was not diagnosed prior to pregnancy, and it usually, but not always, disappears following delivery.
Avatar f tn t pass so I had to do it a second time, which was even worse because you have to drink more. I had gestational diabetes during my first pregnancy, but not the second. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I told my doctor I'm not excited about drinking that "deathly" sugar lol! So I was advised I could bring in a 16oz bottle of 100% real juice and if I could drink that in 5mins,that would suffice instead of drinking that sugar poison. Lol! Just glad they came up with a new method.
Avatar f tn No family with diabetes n didnt have it b4.
Avatar n tn Since you have had a history of gestational diabetes, it probably is something to watch. Your body may have responded to the glucose tolerance test with more insulin than you needed, but I am not a doctor, so I can't say for sure it was a response to the test. The fact that your levels are fine is a good sign that you may get through this pregnancy without the gestational diabetes. But even so you may want to do an occasional blood test to make sure.
Avatar n tn Hi, certainly it is possible to have diabetes (more likely after gestational diabetes). You probably should be checked for type 1 diabetes, which can also occur as an adult. This will involve antibody testing as well as checking blood insulin levels. Although your sugar levels are not terribly high, they do seem higher than normal. Hba1c of 5.2 is not high, and still within high normal range.
Avatar f tn So she said their was allot of carbs and thats prob why their was sugar present when they tested it. But I have to go for a glucose tolerance test Wednesday just to make sure thats what it is! . . . But im a bit worried about it I have always eaten healthy and im not over weight (pre pregnancy) and I dont have any family members with diabetes so im hoping I dont have it! Im quite worried!!!
4141598 tn?1353918254 Just because you had a positive glucose screening test, it does not necessarily mean that you definitely have gestational diabetes. YOu will need to go for a second (longer) glucose tolerance test. You need to ask your doctor if you have to fast for this test. Usually water is OK, but you should ask ahead of time just to be sure- you don't want to have to repeat it. Good luck.
Avatar f tn re a healthy weight. It is called the one hour glucose tolerance test because your blood is drawn one hour after drinking the glucose drink. If you fail and have to do the three hour the draw your blood first, make you drink the drink, and then draw blood at specific time intervals throughout the next three hours. The purpose of the test is to see how your body responds to and processes a large amount of glucose.
Avatar f tn That combined with the fact that my paternal grandma had gestational diabetes has me kind of freaking out about this (but no other fam history of it). Any thoughts or related personal experiences would be appreciated!
1756129 tn?1317374033 t necessarily a bad thing - although in high enough numbers they can indicate the early presence of Gestational diabetes. If you are overweight, or at risk for gestational diabetes, a high ketone reading may be addressed by doing a glucose tolerance test, where they will make sure your body is processing glucose correctly. If it turns out that you DO have a risk for gestational diabetes, usually a special diet can bring it under control....
Avatar f tn As with fasting or random blood glucose tests, a markedly abnormal oral glucose tolerance test is diagnostic of diabetes. However, blood glucose measurements during the oral glucose tolerance test can vary somewhat. For this reason, if the test shows that you have mildly elevated blood glucose levels, the doctor may run the test again to make sure the diagnosis is correct.
Avatar f tn I failed the 1hr glucose tolerance test with my first daughter and had to do the 3hr and it came back normal, even without having gestational diabetes I still had a 9 pound baby but a very easy delivery. With this second pregnancy I opted to not do the 1hr as it is a very unreliable test from what I have read. I still chose to do the 3hr test as I have a family history of diabetes but again it came back normal, thankfully I have not had gestational diabetes with either pregnancy.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had gestational diabetes?? Took the 1 hour glucose tolerance test and they called and said i have to come back for the three hour i go on Wednesday. grrrrr so frustrated, scared, nervous because i don't want to be doing any harm to my baby. How much should i worry what should i do now??
Avatar f tn If the test, which screens for gestational diabetes, reveals elevated levels of blood glucose (sugar), a glucose tolerance test is then given to confirm the gestational diabetes diagnosis
Avatar f tn If you fail the glucose test means you have gestational diabetes thats what the glucose test is for
Avatar f tn My glucose tolerance test came back elevated. I'm so nervous now. I have a 3 hour test Wed. Has anyone else had gestional diabetes during pregnancy? I'm 30 weeks.. nervous ..
