I had to drink that orange stuff today for the glucose test and ever since I've been feeling so sick. Lightheaded dizzy sleepy and bad stomach cramps. Anyone else had this reaction?
My dog was diagnosed in August 2008 with diabetes. His symptoms were increased urination, increased thirst, and hind leg weakness. His initial bloodwork showed elevated glucose (450), elevated platelets and liver enzymes, and a high WBC. His liver was also enlarged. We started him on Vetsulin and an antibiotic (because of the elevated WBC), and continued his regular diet of Science Diet adult maintenance. His dose of insulin is 8 units BID.
Most dogs do well on either Novolin N or Humulin N. Personally, I found Humulin N to work better for my dog. The cost of a bottle of insulin at WalMart is about $25 compared to $50 for the same thing at a regular retail pharmacy.
7. There are many diets you can use. You are not limited to w/d, which the vets seem to push! I don't know if your dog vomited because he didn't like the w/d, but maybe you have an idea about why that happened. It may have been because his sugar was high.
White cells are very elevated, which indicates an infection and can cause the other quirks in the blood work. They don't seem that far out of line. Is your dog on antibiotics? If he is still not drinking he may need IV or Sub-q fluids to prevent dehydration. What did the exrays show?

They claim cataract improvement with the eye drops. Cataract surgery is about $2000 per eye plus travel expenses round trip, they will only do one eye at a time and Joey would have to be totally blind in order for them to do surgery.
Please take your dog to the vet. I'm an advocate of alternative treatments, but I wouldn't advise this in the future. The fact that your dog is bleeding and you don't know what to do tells me that you are not skilled enough to manage the minor or more serious complications that could come of this.
A neighbors dog had become diabetic and the dog had to take medication. Make sure that you give the medication on time, like if it is 12 hours apart, then do it say 7am and 7 pm, it is very important.

I would also suggeat that you read about the food a dog should have. Aviod giving the dog treats that increase his sugar in the blood, you might feed several times a day in small amouts?

The A1c level of 8.3% is very high. Continuing on this path can and will lead to other serious health complications.

I've been diagnosed with idiopathic Small Fiber Neuropathy which I'm sure as many of you know is a common malady with diabetics. The "idiopathic" is hard to accept, so I've been doing a lot of reading and research myself, and requested an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. I'd like to share my results of that test and other glucose-related tests and get some opinions if I could.
Fasting Glucose: Low 80s (consistently)
A1c: 5.

Because if your glucose is too on the screening test you will need to take the full glucose tolerance test (diagnostic test). Which is a pain.
I failed my 1 hour test (1 point too high) so had to do the full three hour test. For this you do have to fast for at least 8-10 hours before the test. You have to drink twice as much sugar water (100 gm). And you have to wait there while they take multiple blood samples in that ttime.
