1458799 tn?1328757528 Pharmacodynamics Bupropion is a relatively weak inhibitor of the neuronal uptake of norepinephrine and dopamine, and does not inhibit monoamine oxidase or the re-uptake of serotonin. While the mechanism of action of bupropion, as with other antidepressants, is unknown, it is presumed that this action is mediated by noradrenergic and/or dopaminergic mechanisms." Avatar m tn I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
167426 tn?1254086235 another new drug on the horizon Phenoxodiol is being developed as a chemosensitizing agent in combination with platinum drugs for late stage, chemoresistant ovarian cancer and as a monotherapy for prostate and cervical cancers. It has a unique mechanism of action, binding to cancer cells via a cell membrane oxidase, causing major downstream disturbances in expression of proteins necessary for cancer cell survival and responsible for the development of drug resistance.
1399363 tn?1462342610 As I understand it, what the medical professional above was saying is that these supplements can help if the natural production of diamine oxidase in your body is not happening because of deficiencies of key supplements. However, if diamine oxidase is low or not being produced for other reasons, maybe genetics or something, then the supplements are not going to resolve the problem. It is clear that eating a low histamine diet is not easy at all.
Avatar m tn The mechanism of action of Campral® (acamprosate calcium) Delayed-Release Tablets in maintenance of alcohol abstinence is not completely understood. Originally, several neurotransmitter systems, including GABA, were investigated for a possible role in Campral's mechanism of action. However, recent evidence suggests Campral's main interaction is with the glutamate system. Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition.

Avatar m tn Oyakawa I am in my 3rd year of medical school and I was wondering the mechanism of action of steroid injections in the eyelid causing cataracts. It is not an osmotic agent so why does that occur? thanks so much.

Avatar m tn In the fast test you are instructed not to eat for a certain number of hours, your blood glucose level is measured, you drink a specific amount of glucose, and then, for a number of hours at specific intervals your glucose levels are measured. You should be a "little nervous" and making an appointment for such an evaluation should be a priority. The blood sugar levels does not fall because "you have not been eating properly".
534105 tn?1226157177 s lab tests, they show signs of glucose handling abnormalities referred to as impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance. They are part of a stage known as prediabetes. Right now the options for your Mom would include changes in dietary and exercise habits to try to bring her levels back to normal (this is usually our first course of action), or starting a drug called Metformin(this is up to your doctor and your mom to decide).
1423357 tn?1511085442 Equal contains Dextrose, commonly called glucose, d-glucose, or blood sugar. Dextrose is made up of high carbohydrates which is known to raise glucose levels. Equal also contains Maltodextrin, which is made from cornstarch. It is a simple carbohydrate that is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, thus raising your glucose level. You might try switching to Splenda which is made from sugar but does effect nor raise your glucose levels. 4. Black tea has caffeine.
Avatar f tn Plavix has a unique mechanism of action by blocking the amplification of platelet activation by released ADP, and often used with aspirin to prevent the risk of clots for the first year after DES implant. Plavix and aspirin have different mechanism of action to prevent clots. After a year, plavix is usually discontinue as the risk for clots is decreased, and aspirin is continued long term. The risk of a clot is about 3%.
Avatar m tn All SSRIs, including escitalopram, should not be combined with drugs in the monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor class of antidepressants such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), selegiline (Eldepryl) and procarbazine (Matulane). Such combinations may lead to confusion, high blood pressure, high fevers, tremor or muscle rigidity, and increased activity.
Avatar n tn It seems to me that it would cause hyperglycemia because of the sugar in the alcohol. I just heard a story of an adult who passed out twice because she had wine after taking insulin. Her blood sugar was 175 when she took her insulin and within 15 minutes she was passed out. My son is 16 and although he doesn't drink and states that he has no intention of starting; I need to know how the body handles alcohol when you have diabetes.

Avatar n tn Anti-depressants can certainly cause weight gain. The ones that are best known to cause weight gain are: • the Tricyclic antidepressants such as Amitriptyline (Elavil), Imipramine (Tofranil), and Doxepin (Sinequan) • the Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as Tranylcypromine (Parnate), Isocarboxazid (Marplan) and Phenelzine (Nardil) • the Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Paroxetine (Paxil) • the atypical anti-depressants such as Mirtazapine (Remeron) and Trazodone.
Avatar f tn Potassium is a chemical element and it is part of the electrolyte that should be in balance with other lytes to adequately conduct an electrical impulse that originates with the sinus node in the right atrium. The mechanism of action is not completely understood, but what is when a voltage (unit of potential for conduction) and electrolyte there will conduction and passage of electrical impluses.
Avatar n tn They are responsible for the actual purification and filtration of the blood. Being part of the homeostatic mechanism of the body, the nephron helps regulate the amount of water, salts, glucose, urea and other minerals in the body. Avatar m tn http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/578705 Ribavirin improves early responses to peginterferon through improved interferon signaling. Gastroenterology. 2010 Jul;139 The therapeutic mechanisms of ribavirin for hepatitis C are unclear. Microarray analyses have shown that ribavirin increases induction of interferon-stimulated genes. We evaluated viral kinetics, serum cytokine expression, and viral mutagenesis during early stages of peginterferon therapy with and without ribavirin.
Avatar f tn Elevated blood glucose levels are indicative of gestational diabetes, although no one seems to know exactly what causes it. Hormones in the placenta can block the action of the mother's insulin in her body; insulin resistance makes it hard for the mother's body to use insulin, and without enough insulin glucose is turned into energy because it can't leave the body. A high level of blood glucose, called hyperglycemia, requires the baby to work harder.
