Avatar n tn Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar (glucose). The blood glucose levels in healthy individuals fluctuate depending greatly on the duration of fasting. The normal range is 70 to 120 mg/dl after an overnight (12 hours) fast. In healthy men, the blood glucose can drop to 55 mg/dl after 24 hours of fasting and to 48 mg/dl after 72 hours of fasting. In healthy women, glucose levels can be as low as 35 mg/dl after only 24 hours of fasting.
Avatar m tn One of the most frustrating is memory loss. Memory loss can occur in most people as they age. But sometimes, memory loss can be due to circulatory problems and hormonal changes in the body. To prevent memory loss when a person has diabetes, one should change their diet to include foods with fiber, protein, and calcium that will stimulate blood flow and also help replace some of the nutrients lost. Exercise will also promote blood flow.
Avatar n tn I know that there are some meters that use tinier drops of blood than others, and also that people can use sites other than fingertips with some meters (usually the ones that don't require a large blood drop). I have read, however, that sites other than fingertips can be less accurate. As to how different the glucose reading would be, it probably depends on the meter and perhaps on the size of blood drop.
973741 tn?1342342773 aggressive lowering of HbA1c via meds did not further lower the primary endpoint of cardiac events (including death and Acute Coronary Syndromes); though btw it did result in increased overall mortality. (The article merely talks about how "Sugar [results in] damage to your blood vessels and the nerves that control them".) ACCORD did, however, find benefit for microvascular diseases (IIRC, heart failure, & retina and kidney damage).
Avatar m tn t have enough insulin available to help the glucose get into the cells, and to regulate how much glucose the liver releases, then the net effect is that your blood glucose will be higher after exercise.
Avatar f tn I am feeling numbness in hands and feet as a result of being a diabetic. I am have memory loss and confusion. I am also shaking especially in the hands. Speech problems. What should I do ?

Avatar m tn Has anyone had any problems with their memory being affected? I've read and read, web search, etc. I'm still trying to figure out if it's my thyroid, something else, or another RX causing the problem. Sometimes it seems like it's my thyroid and the RX for it helps, then it slips back again . Any suggestions? I am currently taking Synthroid and I was on Levo. I've had my doctor prescribe T3 also but I've stopped that because of migraine issues.
604185 tn?1233960857 I must have slept maximum 4 hours. Would this effect the glucose test results. Should I go for test tomorrow instead of today?
Avatar f tn My mother in law had her gallbladder removed and returned to work a week and a half later. Shortly after returning to work, she suffered memory loss. She would forget where she was, what day it was, her closet friends and family members. Her memory has gotten better. She also became depressed and constantly asks everyone what happened to her. She has diabetes( Type 2 I believe). We're trying to figure out what caused the memory loss the diabetes or the gallbladder removal.
Avatar f tn Use your home meter to test your glucose levels. If you're having memory issues start a log - date/time/dose - so you have something to reference in the future.
Avatar n tn could the infection effect the number 128? How do I lower the glucose number? what foods effect glucose?
Avatar f tn 6 days ago I experienced a hypoglycemic reaction and after recovering I have no memory of things that happened up to 2 weeks prior. I have no recollection of people that I have known for both short and long amounts of time. Will my memory eventually return?
Avatar f tn My mom is 82, and in the last few months, her memory has gone downhill, very quickly. She has COPD, and refuses oxygen, although she has trouble breathing when she walks. Does anyone know if lack of oxygen to the brain could cause the memory loss and confusion??
Avatar f tn However, strenuous exercise can have the opposite effect as your body may release stress hormones that tells your body to release available glucose for energy. 1. That last 10 minutes may have jacked up your glucose as this falls under strenuous exercise, that is, unless this has been your normal routine for months on end. 2 & 3 - Good start 4. Eat after exercising not before.
Avatar n tn The answer is NOT in raising overall glucose levels, for high glucose numbers can cause the complications that destroy quality of life later on. The real key is frequent glucose testing so you KNOW when glucose levels are rising or dropping. I suggest to folks who attempt tight control that they test not only before each meal and at bedtime, but also at least once in between each meal, so the tests happen every few hours.
Avatar n tn His PCP has checked him with tests and a brain x-ray, all looks normal for a 66 year old man. Could this still be a side effect of the surgery.
Avatar m tn These sticks are a good indicator, but they will only detect glucose in the urine if there is above a certain level (fairly high) of glucose in the urine. An HbA1c blood test shows average blood glucose levels over a sustained period (about a 3 month period). Rather than a normal blood test that would only show the sugar levels at the time you gave your blood for testing.
Avatar n tn However, others have not corroborated these findings, and a few have even reported a negative effect on glucose tolerance and blood levels. MANAGEMENT: Until further data are available, therapy with pharmacologic dosages of chromium should be administered cautiously in patients receiving insulin and/or oral antidiabetic agents due to the potential for additive risk of hypoglycemia. Patients should be monitored for changes in diabetic medication requirements. http://www.drugs.
Avatar n tn I am not quite sure what your question is about concerning the alcohol. Are you asking which to drink first, or asking what the effects might be? The answer is that alcohol lowers the liver's ability to release emergency sugars that all people store in their livers in case they haven't eaten in a long time and glucose levels drop (which can happen to non-diabetics as well as to diabetics, but which can be life-threatening to the type 1 diabetic).
