Avatar n tn took him to the hospital where they immediately ran serum glucose levels, which came out to 47. this was within 45 min. of the ingestion. they started a glucose drip and fed him graham crackers and gator aide and monitored him overnight. My question is .....could it be his glucose level was already low secondary to a developing diabetes type I or can that medicine act that quickly. I think we may have stumbled on to something accidently.

You should discuss this with a more knowledgeable person, ideally with a Clinical Toxicologist (often based in Public Health Depts. I am not advising you to do what I do--I am saying see your doctor or PA. Thats what my provider told me, Again---You need to get specific giudance from your diabetes health care providers.
Avatar n tn It seems to me that it would cause hyperglycemia because of the sugar in the alcohol. I just heard a story of an adult who passed out twice because she had wine after taking insulin. Her blood sugar was 175 when she took her insulin and within 15 minutes she was passed out. My son is 16 and although he doesn't drink and states that he has no intention of starting; I need to know how the body handles alcohol when you have diabetes.

This may be caused by the sugar in alcohol, little as it may be its still present. The jury is still out on DP and there's a lot of psuedo scientific material on the net. But even more it can cause those person with diabetes to pay less attention to their health and blood sugars. This does not mean you can never drink alcohol, But it should be taken in moderation only. When you do have a first drink (remember moderation) do it in the company of a trusted friend so you can safely see the effect it has on you.
