Avatar f tn My partner has been trying to lose weight forever!. When I met him he was about 76 Kilos, 7 years later he is now 82. He is not very tall (5' 6'') so I guess he is about 2 stone over weight. He does not eat very much but unfortunately drinks too much. For a long time I have suspected he is 'glucose intolerant', in that even when he has carbohydrate available he goes shaky and experiences 'low' blood sugar symptoms.

Avatar f tn Glucose intolerance is when the body does not utilise the glucose in your body properly and the fasting blood glucose level is above 6.0 mmol/L or your blood glucose level is over 7.8 mmol/L 2 hours after consuming 75g of glucose. At this stage, with life style changes and exercises, you can still avoid getting diabetes. You could say it is pre diabetes. The symptoms of glucose intolerance can be those of hyperglycaemia and also tingling sensations.

Avatar m tn This can progress to cirrhosis of the liver and can be associated with hepatocellular carcinoma. So, prevention or cure is by avoiding alcohol and treating diabetes, obesity and high triglyceride levels. Ultrasound only assess the structural abnormalities, to assess the functional status you could have a liver and kidney function tests done. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Avatar f tn I think her doc should have advised her to get nutrition info and maybe also use a glucose testing meter. Not sure if she would need meds at this early stage, but he should have spoked to her about everything, in my opinion. Question - should my friend start getting more pro-active about her condition?
