Glucose is the sugar your body converts into energy. Glycogen is the sugar your body stores in both your liver and muscle cells. Your body can't use glycogen directly as a source of energy, and cannot store glucose. So when the liver is damaged it can't covert glycogen to glucose for your body to use for energy.

Avatar m tn I did not factor in that my liver was probably producing glycogen in order to fuel my workouts. This was resulting in a high reading for me in the mornings even when I had very few carbs to eat the night before. WaveRider pointed this out to me when I questioned my fluctuations in readings. I changed my exercise time to the mornings and afternoons and now my fasting glucose in the morning is right where it should be for me. Keep up the exercise! Just change the time you do it.

The doctor is now asking for Hemoglobin A1c. I know you guys aren't medical professionals, but isn't a value of 124 for a glucose random test well below the diabetic limit (200?) Avatar n tn t know a lot about the device except that because it uses glocose from the arm rather than the fingertip it has to be calibrated by a finger tip glucose reading when put on. i have also heard that it may not be as accurate as using the blood from a fingertip reading. But it may be helpful for your son if he is experiencing frequent lows. i went through a period of frequent lows and lost my ability to feel them and got into a terrible car accident because of that.
Avatar n tn After a severe low, it is important to avoid another low (they can come in clusters) so his liver rebuilds its glycogen stores that (if he had a glucagon shot, it causes the liver to dump glucose that's made from its stored glycogen) for the future. I agree that 500+ is extremely high, however, and must feel horrible. If his levels have not stabilized yet, I'd talk to the doc again about introducing a short-acting insulin to help him bring it down.
Avatar n tn s glycogen store could be DEADLY because when we have a low blood sugar, part of the counter-regulatory response is for our liver to dump glucose into our blood stream. Our liver uses glycogen stores to make that happen. No glycogen stores ... no built-in safety net to a dangerous low getting lower. A second reason to be cautious about a very low carbo way of eating is that it means we would have a higher amount of fat & protein.

On your ketogenic diet your levels are totally normal. However, on this diet there is very little demand on your pancreas. if you increase your carbs, depending on the health of your pancreas, you may or may not have high blood sugar levels. So we cannot know if you are diabetic. You do not have diabetic numbers on this diet.

In response to that signal from muscles, the liver will convert stored glycogen into glucose to provide the fuel. If we diabetics are not well-trained on how to exercise, strenuously, while maintaining our blood sugar in a target range, we will be more likely to see rises in blood sugar.
