Glucose homeostasis and fuel metabolism

Common Questions and Answers about Glucose homeostasis and fuel metabolism

glucose

Avatar n tn m assuming my carnitine miracle has something to do with fat and/or sugar metabolism, and that whatever malfunction I have is probably outside the resources of my HMO. My question is if there's any reason to follow up with a doctor to try to find out what's going on, or should I just be happy that I apparently have my life back. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.
Avatar m tn Cortisol has a variety of functions, one of which is that it plays an important role as a fuel in carbohydrates, proteins and fats metabolism process in the body. Low cortisol levels translate into a lower metabolism. So, if there are low cortisol levels in the blood, the body metabolism rate would be slower compared to those that have normal levels of cortisol (since there is a lack of fuel).
Avatar f tn Tissues which are rapidly dividing, such as cancer cells, have increased metabolic rates, and subsequently an increased uptake of glucose which provides the fuel for metabolism. Therefore, cancer cells usually show increased activity in a PET scan because of increased glucose uptake. However, some normal body tissues, like the bone marrow or the intestinal mucosal lining, are also actively dividing or have high metabolic rates and may also show activity in PET.

MITOCHONDRIA ARE THUS OF SPECIAL INTEREST IN RELATING DEFECTS IN AXONAL TRANSPORT TO NEUROPATHIES AND DEGENERATIVE DISEASES OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM.” Refer: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1533994 Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage.
Avatar m tn The body recognizes intense exercise as a stress and releases stress hormones that tells your body to increase available blood glucose to fuel your muscles. If your glucose levels exceed normal levels discuss with your doctor medication or medication adjustment.
Avatar m tn The thing about coffee is that it does have reliable science behind its hepato-friendly claims. But this also speaks to some of the mis-conceptions about antioxidants in general. A lot of that is due to the science being mis-used in commercial marketing, I believe. In general, all plants all have compounds called polyphenols.
Avatar n tn if too high, because there is not enough insulin to convert the carbs eaten into usable fuel; and if too low, because there aren't enough carbs to BE converted into usable fuel. Both cause fatigue symptoms also. Her 'yellow' vision is also something I have experienced when blood pressure drops too low and I get up too quickly. I happen to have fairly low blood pressure, and so having her blood pressure checked might help. If low, she just may not be able to get up too quickly.
Avatar n tn , at the time your meds brought your metabolism up to normal and were symptom free, and then at the time your symptoms returned. This was great work on your part and such info could be of great interest and benefit to members now and for future reference. Thanks.
Tbd Postprandial hyperglycemia is also one of the earliest abnormalities of glucose homeostasis associated with type 2 diabetes" https://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/24/4/775 So test 1-2 hours after a meal. As a pure guess, I'd think that once a month is sufficient - unless you change your diet or activity or other risk factors.
Avatar f tn They state that excess dietary lysine did not change serum lipids and glucose significantly. The data showed that excess lysine caused changes in lipid metabolism which varied with the quantity of casein in it. Regards.
Avatar m tn They can be used by your body cells as fuel. However, it is not the preferred fuel for your body. The preferred fuel is glucose, and ketones could be seen as a "back-up plan." There are two things that can trigger the liver to produce ketones. The first trigger is a low or nearly non-existent insulin level. This can occur in people who have type 1 diabetes or very advanced type 2. The second trigger is a low glucose level.
Avatar m tn Your pancreas is not dead! Diabetes type 1 is when the immune system destroys part of the pancreas that produces insulin, but leaves the rest perfectly intact. Type 2 is when nothing is destroyed, but for some reason, you're either not producing enough insulin, or the insulin that you produce is not efficient enough. There's a clear distinction between the two, as type 1 is autoimmune 'disease'. In all cases the pancreas is still performing all the other functions correctly.
Avatar m tn I beleive that any kind of stress in my case speeds up metabolism, burning off more carbs and perhaps speeding up the absorption of insulin into my body. The combination causes severe hypoglycemia at times. Good stress such as the visit of a loved one from out of town or a family holiday can do this to me, for I become excited and happy, and things speed up and I then keel over. Bad stress such as moving to a new city or changing jobs can cause the same thing.
Avatar f tn htm I would suggest that at your age you are careful with changes in your metabolism. What is metabolism? Metabolism is a collection of chemical reactions that takes place in the body's cells. Metabolism converts the fuel in the food we eat into the energy needed to power everything we do, from moving to thinking to growing. If you want to lose weight The safest amount of weight you can lose is anything from .5 to 2 lbs a week.
Avatar n tn Theoretically, if you are in good control and not eating more than your body needs, in terms of your metabolism and your activity level, then you should maintain the same weight. Weight gain may occur for all the same reasons that people without diabetes gain weight. They eat more food than they need. They can still be in good control as long as they take enough insulin to keep theri blood sugars within a healthy range.
Avatar n tn When you are training, your body needs fuel and nutrition to be able to get you through the workout and rebuild muscle tissue during your resting period. If you are not receiving the proper nutrition, you will likely be fatigued, fall short of your workout goals and lose weight. learn the proper foods to eat to gain weight before training, so your body will have the available nutrients for a good training program.
Avatar n tn Cancer cells alter your pets body’s ability to metabolize dietary nutrients, including carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The effect of cancer on dog and cat glucose or "blood" sugar metabolism is most dramatic in pets. Cancer or tumor cells preferentially use anaerobic glycolysis to metabolize glucose for energy, forming lactate as the end product. Lactate is then converted back to glucose at the expense of your pet.
979080 tn?1323433639 In cellular metabolism, glucose (sugar) can be converted into fatty acids. Many viruses use these fatty acids to build their viral envelopes, or outer coatings, which help the viruses penetrate and infect human cells. When the Hepatitis C virus gets into your body, it tries to increase your metabolism so that it can reproduce more quickly by using fatty acids to build protective outer coatings which will help it penetrate and infect your liver cells.
2118271 tn?1337463104 I am going to an endecronologist next week and my glucose tolerance test did show blood glucose ups and crashes too from 180 to 60 within an hour . It's also not about how low it gets but also how fast it drops . either this is prediabetes , or insulinoma which is a usually benign tumor on the pancreas that releases too much insulin .
Avatar f tn html Of course weight can be associated with calorie intake and exercise as well as or metabolism; however, if you are having other hypo symptoms, then that would make me suspicious about your metabolism and your thyroid levels. Subclinical really doesn't apply since you are already taking thyroid meds. Also, what thyroid med are you taking and how much daily?
Avatar n tn Your weight and leanness is determined by your genetics and by your diet and how it affects your metabolism. Fasting can be useful for spiritual and detoxification, but obviously one doesn't need to detox a whole lot.
9777394 tn?1468991122 Hypoxemia - low SPO2 - low blood oxygen/ low oxygen saturation levels 2. Low amylase- low blood glucose - impaired ability to breakdown carbs (starches and sugars) and to use for energy/ low blood glucose (non-diabetic) could indicate adrenal, liver or pancreatic issues. 3. Low AST -- When muscles produce lactate while oxygen supply is decreased , they also produce alanine. This alanine goes through the liver where it is metabolized to make glucose.
Avatar n tn I know that there are some meters that use tinier drops of blood than others, and also that people can use sites other than fingertips with some meters (usually the ones that don't require a large blood drop). I have read, however, that sites other than fingertips can be less accurate. As to how different the glucose reading would be, it probably depends on the meter and perhaps on the size of blood drop.
