If you have diabetes or glucose intolerance then Metformin can help you as well to control your blood sugars. Therefore there is a lot you can you with diet, exercise, weight loss to improve your condition.
Avatar f tn I had fasting labs done a few months ago because of hypothyroid. My blood glucose at that time was 102mg/dl. Is that high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes? I already have another appointment for fasting labs next month. I thought I would get a jump start on changing my eating habits but I can't figure out what I can eat. Everytime I try to follow one of the diets in a magazine or on a website I end up with headaches that last for days.
Avatar n tn "...this change in my blood sugar level is due to medicine I am taking or due to my diet and exrcise." Going by your A1c and Lipid panel results it is your diet. This was verified by "I did my glucose test yesterday (fasting it was 106 and post lunch it was 161)." If your postprandial [2-3 hrs after meal] levels are above 99 mg/dl, the foods you are eating is causing your health problems. The thread below briefly covers basic diabetes rules.
Avatar f tn I dislike the word diet. “Diet” implies a rigorous, self-sacrificial discipline that’s doomed to fail. Instead, focus on achieving food goals of what you should eat each day rather than what you shouldn’t eat.
Avatar f tn //diabetes.webmd.com/glycemic-index-good-versus-bad-carbs Careful on the candy, everyone is different. For me, as a type 2, one piece would jack my glucose levels way up. I just avoid anything sugar.
Avatar n tn I was wondering how you managed your diabetes and how strict you are with your diet, like do you only eat set meals throughout the day and stay away from foods with a high glycemic index? If you do eat foods with a high GI, like a banana, do you wait a while after taking your insulin to give it a headstart?
Avatar n tn Glycemic index rates foods according to how they affect your glucose numbers. Many websites will let you look up foods to see the ratings. So potatoes are worse than cauliflower, for example, because potatoes have alot of starch aka sugar aka carbs in them and would affect your glucose ratings more than cauliflower. Many don't realize though that one food has multiple glycemic index ratings, according to how it is prepared. Raw, boiled, baked, fried, steamed, etc.
Avatar f tn I am trying to control my glucose levels with highly restricted diet and some exercise. So far I succeeded but sometimes readings come very erratic, another problem is my fasting glucose levels which always come on border ie <5.2. Usually when I get abnormal reading at 1hr I again do at 2hr. I am really puzzled how to overcome this problem, is this also common with other women?
Avatar f tn I had routine blood work done and was told that my cholesterol (albeit okay in total) was out of range. the good was too low and the bad too high, though the combined total was still "normal" at 135. My hemaglobin A1C was on the higher side of normal and my glucose was 122 which was high. I had been experiencing a lot of abnormal heart pounding and a feeling of being short of breath. My doctor basically told me in about 2 sentences to not eat fatty food and watch my sugar intake.
Avatar n tn I checked the lab test online and seen that I had fasting glucose of 105 and according to their online index table it was out of normal range. I emailed my Doc and he said that reading of 105 did not concern him. But is 105 pre-diabetic? I'm 27, male. 6'0 and 160, not overweight at all, in fact I'm too skinny for being a male. I read that losing weight will reduce the chance of getting type 2 diabetes. But I cannot afford to lose weight, I'm actually trying to gain weight.
Avatar n tn For the type 2 diabetic, I also have read (from the Atkins people) that their diet is a good way to lower glucose levels. This is logical for the type 2 diabetic, for eating a fairly low-carbohydrate diet would not require the production of as much insulin by the already stressed pancreas.
Avatar m tn Hi all, My mom is 83 years old and has elevated glucose levels for about 5 years now. They rarely went over 150 and she has been able to control her glucose quite well through diet and exercise. But 2 months ago, she went into the hospital for 2 days for an unrelated issue & they fed her lots of high glycemic foods. Her doctor in the hospital said he was concerned she may have low blood sugar so my brothers fed her junk food and cake.
Avatar n tn -- a situation whereby if a person eats something with a high glycemic index, their body over-produces insulin to correct the glucose and the person ends up hypoglycemic. Check out www.hypoglycemia.
Avatar m tn I'd also add to learn about the glycemic index and glycemic loads of foods (glycemicindex.com) and learn to pick and eat foods with a lower index. Every single food you eat is converted to glucose, the trick is eating those that don't spike your system. Proteins, good fats and the right fruits and veggies. (not unlike southbeach) For instance, WaveRider mentioned fruits. Different fruits have different glycemic loads. For instance, apples have glycemic index of ~35-40, which is low.
Avatar n tn My blood sugars are not controlled. Fasting in 140 s and postprandial 300s. I am following diabetic diet and doing regular exercise/ What is the next step I should do. Please advise. My recent A1C is 8.5. Thank you.
Avatar m tn That just means the cells of your body may not be using insulin/glucose properly. Diet changes can often indicate whether insulin is being used properly... sticking with a low glycemic diet often helps one lose weight.
20620809 tn?1504362969 I reversed my pre-diabetes by eating low glycemic foods (those that don’t spike glucose levels). I centered my diet on veggies, a small amount of fruit, along with nuts, seeds, etc. I also included healthy fats, such as olive and coconuts oils. I even managed to lose 26 lbs in the process. Unfortunately, I didn’t stick with the diet and started gaining back the weight when they messed up my thyroid hormone levels. Take a look at the Mediterranean Diet.
806995 tn?1265823176 My glucose level are on the high side (6.5, 5.2, 6.1 mmol/l at -1, 1, and 4 weeks of TX respectively). Hence, I suspect I'm insulin resistent. I'm genotype 1 and have also HIV. At 4 weeks I only had a 0.23 log drop in VL. I may well be a non-responder, and perhaps it is related to a possible IR. In November 2008 the results of a double blind test was published, where IR geno 1 HCV where treated with additional Metformin to suppress the IR. It worked, but mainly for women and fat people.
1666434 tn?1325262350 We are not allowed to post web links on this forum. If you use Google to search on the 'Glycemic Index', the GI will explain the differences between simple and complex carbs. Besides sugar, simple carbs are a diabetics worst enemy as they quickly raise glucose [blood sugar] levels. Fruits must be eaten with other foods to slow the absorption of fructose [fruit sugar]. Caution with tropical fruits as they contain large amounts of fructose - pineapple, mangoes, papayas.
Avatar f tn I have hypotension, as well, and have similar episodes. I also have an issue with blood glucose levels that drop (hypoglycemia) and recover quickly. Both of these issues can produce, what's similar to a hot flash with a "buzz", but it usually only lasts a short time, unless I go into a full hypoglycemic attack, which is totally different. I doubt you'd be going from hypo to hyper that quickly, but I'm the last person to say anything is impossible.
808221 tn?1242744188 m loosing weight and exercising i wondering if i can control the glucose level with diet and exercise. Doc will probably say no. I started taking some probiotics a few months back because my cancer med was causing havoc with my digestive system. The probiotics cleared it up but not helping with the glucose meds. I;ll google the pages you suggested.
Avatar m tn I've never heard of the diet - maybe it works or maybe it doesn't - everyone is different. But since you like meat alot, why don't you read up on the Atkins diet or the South Beach diet. These diets are low carbohydrate diets. Eating low carb avoids the constant stimulation of insulin. The first few weeks of the diet help in getting rid of insulin resistance. Many people say goodbye to their medications on this diet.
