Common Questions and Answers about Glucose affect insulin secretion

glucose

Avatar f tn Try this for a week, and you will see a difference of how you feel, as you will gain control over insulin secretion, keeping your blood sugar rock steady and a feeling of being well fed.
1084115 tn?1385228589 In our study, we gave intravenous glucose, a specific stimulus to insulin secretion, and showed that insulin secretion was not impaired in Hepatitis C patients compared to our control group." "This finding tells us that people with Hepatitis C who develop diabetes probably have susceptible insulin-producing cells, and would probably get it anyway – but much later in life. The extra insulin resistance caused by Hepatitis C apparently brings on diabetes at 35 or 40, instead of 65 or 70.
Avatar f tn I have a 6 year old son that had an acanthosis nigrican appear on his neck. The PCP tested him for insulin resistence. His fasting glucose was fine. His insulin levels came in as <2. They said that normal is <17. Does this mean that it is normal or suppressed? His t4 thyroid results were right at the top of the range. I have insulin resistence and hashimoto's. I can't talk to the PCP until Monday.
233616 tn?1312787196 In types 1 and 2 (insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus, somatomedin-1 increases the sensitivity to insulin and improves glucose utilisation. Experimental studies indicate that IGF-1 has a role in nerve tissue metabolism, and in humans may contribute to healing of injured nerve tissue.
Avatar n tn When normal glucose regulation fails with type 2 diabetics, the kidneys are forced to remove excess glucose via the urinary tract. This usually is caused by insulin deficiency. In your case this does not apply. I have read that one of the common symptoms of POTS is reactive hypoglycemia, lowering of glucose.
1399363 tn?1462342610 Beta blockers cause hyperkalemia b/c they inhibit the secretion of insulin. With no insulin secretion, a masked hypoglycemia and hyperkalemia occur. Therefore the antidotes for beta blocker toxicity consist of glucagon and calcium gluconate. For the hypoglycemia and hyperkalemia respectively." "Beta receptors are specifically linked to calcium-gated potassium channels, and their activation allows potassium to enter the cell directly. A blocker, therefore, will inhibit this uptake.
519736 tn?1253986826 thanx for your quick reply. I did have black coffee right before the test. I have hypothyroidism. It was a new Endo I saw last June that ordered the blood work. He did not inform me of the insulin of 109 until August. And he told me I was "becoming insulin resistant". My glucose was normal. I'm confused. Are insulin and blood sugar the same thing?
1666903 tn?1383332156 I've read that Lamictal is sometimes used to help with blood sugar control--especially to lower the levels. Most people on this drug, who are diabetics, do seem to experience this effect. My psychiatrist just increased my Lamictal from 300mg. to 350mg. daily, and plans to up it further. It has definitely decreased my depressive symptoms, for which I'm quite grateful.
Avatar f tn Metformin works by increasing your body's sensitivity to insulin, however it doesn't directly affect the amount of insulin your body releases. A level of 2 hours after eating is not necessarily a concern. It is normal range. What I would like to know is what your fasting numbers are. Also what are your numbers just before your eat. This can tell us more.
Avatar m tn High BG is also known to slow down healing, as far as taking insulin to counter BG from Prednisone it dont work for me I am currently on Prednisone and my BG whent through the roof and no matter how much insulin I take it will not come down. I increased my insulin from 50 IU a day to 100 IU durring the 8 hours after I took the pills.
415867 tn?1323365503 I think they are affiliated in that when your glucose levels are high you are susceptible to insulin resistance which is why many women who have PCOS are at risk of getting diabetes. It is the insulin resistance that I think has an affect on the other hormone levels.
Avatar m tn What is "was 126 ( 7.00 mol/lit.)"? Normally mol/lit used to measure electrolyte secretion during a fasting. For glucose, the European standard is mmol/l [lower case L's] as to where 7 mmol/l is consider above normal [high being 6.1 mmol/l] - diabetes not being controlled. Over time you will need to make medication adjustments to compensate for your above normal glucose range.
1925135 tn?1323307656 Amaryl induces secretion of insulin from pancreas, so its most effective.
1310035 tn?1305621642 Hi I am gonna see my neuro next monday but just want to ask some opinions, my neuro made me do a glucose tolerence test, fasting, it came back as abnormal, though the one I did last year september was normal, could the ms affect the glucose levals in ones body, the lab tech said its called insulin something or the other and my cholesterol levels were also high which they were normal last year, I have read that maybe its caused by the brain trying to repair the demeyelinated areas but I don't
5587438 tn?1370416937 It is now clear that PCOS is often associated with profound insulin resistance as well as with defects in insulin secretion. These abnormalities, together with obesity, explain the substantially increased prevalence of glucose intolerance in PCOS.
Avatar n tn Low serum and intracellular magnesium concentrations are associated with insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, and decreased insulin secretion. Magnesium improves insulin sensitivity thus lowering insulin resistance. Magnesium and insulin need each other. Without magnesium, our pancreas won’t secrete enough insulin–or the insulin it secretes won’t be efficient enough–to control our blood sugar." - The Insulin Magnesium Story by Dr.
Avatar f tn Type 2 Diabetes is not because of lack of Insulin but the inability of insulin to perform its task to open up the glucose channels into the cells and when the glucose cannot enter the cells, it bounce back into the bloodstream and causes hyperglycemia.
733939 tn?1231773355 they were 330 and over the weekend i ranged from 275 to 307. How long does it take for the metformin er to take affect where you see the numbers drop followed with a diet....im so new to this and finding hundreds of things on the net....and also what is the danger zone numbers before you get put on insulin.
Avatar n tn diabetes where the pancreas can no longer make insulin or no longer make enough insulin (even with drug support to increase insulin production / increase tissue sensitivity to insulin). This often occurs with people who've had type 2 diabetes for years (a close friend has just had this happen), and when this does (or the pancreas can no longer make enough insulin to control blood sugar) insulin will be required.
Avatar n tn As far as I can see, Symlin effectively treats "post-prandial glucose excusions". In other words, it helps if you get high blood sugar readings after meals. It does this by inhibiting the secretion of Glucagon, which activates the release of glucose by the liver. The effect is that you don't need to bolus as much and your after-meal blood sugars become more predictable.
Avatar f tn OGTT - Oral glucose test. You are given a sugary liquid to drink. Fasting - Simple blood test A1c - The gold standard for diabetes testing "the little monitor thing" Home glucose [blood sugar] meter. Geeks say glucometer, everyone else the former. "It said my level was 155." Depends on when this was done. Random testing has no meaning. Before meals and 2-3 hours after meals are test times. If it was 2-3 hours after a meal you are normal.
Avatar m tn Pregnancy Category 8 Most experts recommend that insulin be used during pregnancy to maintain blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, metformin should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly needed. There are no adequate and well-controled studies in pregnant women with metformin. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Metformin may not be right for you.
Avatar m tn Just ask for that and maybe an oral glucose tolerance test as well. The insulin levels (insulin is a hormone) will tell you whether the insulin is high in the blood (which is very likely if she has PCOS, the pancreas is overactive and secrets much more insulin than needed). The glucose tolerance test will tell you whether she is already insulin resistant. If she has PCOS, these two tests are a must, since the danger of becoming diabetic is rather high.
