As Ellen said, Glucosamine is good but it may take 4-6 weeks to see any benefits. Check with your Vet on the dose. Anti-inflammatories are often used but one may work better than another. My dog weighed 28-30lbs and the correct dose for her was 500mg Glucosamine per day. The vet said the 'human' Glucosamine was fine to use, so long as the dosage was correct for the dog's weight.
So it depends what your dog's weight is, how much you can increase the dose.
As far as I can make out, dogs (and humans too) respond differently to Glucosamine. With some there are great results, and with some, not much improvement.

ive been giving my dog which is 17kg 1000mg of glucosamine every day for a week which i will now reduce to 500mg a day is there any thing else i should give him with this or is glucosamine alone ok my dog has early signs of arthritis in his back legs its a bit of an effort for him to get up now he is 10 yrs 3mths old and had cruciate ligament surgery back in may last yr and in the other leg about 5 to 6 yrs ago

There are a number of possible reasons for this to happen, though really only a doctor can diagnose you. I would look into taking glucosamine pills for now to help with joint pain and see if it helps at all. I'd make another doctor's appointment to get your hand looked at and see what they say.
