Avatar f tn My dog is 12 year old and has arthrits and the vet told me to use glucosamine. In the summer time he does not need it. Now my dog is whimpering and shakeing, when I pet him he stops. This started a couple of days ago. The weather got really cold fast and I just started him back on glucosamine. Does this sound like the arthrits acting up or do I need to worry? How much glucosamine can I give him? I hate when my dog is in pain, I have had him since I was in kindergarden.
Avatar m tn Now my first question is it really a high risk to be taking considering this medecine could cause liver problems or liver failure? My other question is what are the main symptoms of liver problems or liver failure? I am very worried because today he was gagging a little like he wanted to throw up and he also was not acting like himself towards the end of the day he seemed less playful then usual. I offered him steak and he won't eat it.

If you’re considering taking glucosamine with chondroitin you have another ballgame. Since you didn’t ask about the latter I’ll stick to glucosamine by itself. If you search the Internet you’ll see inconclusive evidence of glucosamine having negative effects on blood sugar.
Avatar f tn There is a lot on the internet about glucosamine and dry eyes. the problem is none of it is good science, evidence based medicine and almost all articles are from websites or companies that sell glucosamine.

Nutritional supplements Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate are two substances that have fast become the standard treatment in canine age-related arthritis. 689367 tn?1227469139 Interesting. And Dukey is touting caffeine as a possible treatment for myopia! I drink a cuppa every morning. Anything more than two makes me agitated! Someone posted here before saying glucosamine makes the eyes dry.
Avatar m tn my mom uses it for her RA.....and she says that when she gets the cheaper Costco stuff, she can tell the difference in the stuff her RA doc tells her to get, that is decidedly more expensive... maybe they put more of the essential stuff in the more expensive stuff, I don't know...I sometimes take it, cause my joint pain just comes infrequently...probably should take it every day...I can see a difference when I give it to my little doggie, with her burgeoning arthritis....

Bladder issues can be treated with cranberry juice, glucosamine and chondroitin, antibiotics based on culture and sensitivity of urine, Chinese medical formula's: Eight Righteous, and/or: Ba Zheng San, and Western herbal formula's such as:Hydrangea and Eupatorium, among others.
163305 tn?1333668571 Can't speak relative to treatment, but for myself, I found the combo of glucosamine and chondroitin seemed to help alleviate some of my joint pain ... I found a drink form called 'Elations' ... it's rumored to be more biologically accessible in liquid form... and nice that it tasted yummy too. Best of luck finding relief.
Avatar f tn I have had xrays, bloods, bone scans, vascular studies, and MRI to my thoracic region and this week an MRI on the top part of my neck. The first MRI (performed in OCT 2010) says that I have minor posterior discovertebral spurring extending from c3/4 to c6/7 most pronounced at c6/7 where there is only minimal canal stenosis. I am at my wits end and cannot function with this pain. Do you have any suggestions here?
Avatar m tn ONLY at this point should your liver doc be telling you what you should take. If you are on a treatment there are several supplements that most would not want you to take. Post treatment is different. You do not want to do anything that might interact with the anti-virals. Period.

161647 tn?1280608163 I neglected to mention that my mom does have the start of a cataract. The doctor noticed it last year and said it was very very small and the size has not changed. He checked her macula for damage and did an OCT scan. He is not sure at this point why her vision in her left eye has changed so much and I think that is why he is suggesting a retina specialist. He said the cataract being very small is not likely to be the reason for vision loss.
Avatar m tn 5 pound schnauzer and has been limping a bit after exercise. I have started giving her 500 mg of glucosamine a day and wanted to know if this is the right dosage?
Avatar m tn Hello Flowr, I understand your hesitancy to take Meloxicam. Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic and fever reducer effects. It's often used in Arthritic and inflammatory conditions. However any NSAID comes with concerns - including OTC NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen. Several years ago Glucosamine & Chondroitin was popular with medical providers. It was hailed as the new and one of the best "treatments" for restoring cartilage and reducing pain.
Avatar m tn Glucosamine is sometimes very effective for arthritis, especially in older dogs or after injury etc. But at 5 years old, and especially as no arthritis was found, it may not be that Glucosamine will help. I don't know. Has he been checked for Cruciate ligament tear? If this IS cruciate ligament, surgery -as far as I know- is the best option. Muscle atrophy is often caused by inability to use the leg properly often because of injury or pain etc.
1110049 tn?1409402144 I take glucosomine with chondrotin and MSM, and Omega 3. Is cod liver supplements better than omega 3? I have read about Krill oil. Has anybody tried that? Also a neighbour said Green Lipped Mussel helps her back pain. What do people here take to relieve their arthritis pain?
217229 tn?1192762404 His doctor ran an HCV antibody test and liver enzyme (AST and ALT) test on him. The HCV antibody test came back strongly positive and liver enzymes were elevated many times above normal. Joe said he shared needles with some IV drug users recently, so his doctor suspects he is in the acute phase of an HCV infection. After running a PCR test (which detects the actual virus), the results come back positive - Joe has HCV, and it's probably in the acute phase.
Avatar m tn -( Anyway, your worst enemy is the weight issue so you really need to get the weight off with a weight management food, the green bean diet, etc and maintain it. The dog still needs moderate exercise to maintain muscle tone and strength. Try to avoid stairs, jumping, etc. aquatic therapy is great if you have a pool or facility near you for rehab (hard to find). As Ellen said, Glucosamine is good but it may take 4-6 weeks to see any benefits. Check with your Vet on the dose.
Avatar f tn My dog weighs 29lbs. I will start him on the Glucosamine and Chondroitin and hopefully it will help him.Once again, thanks for the info.
Avatar m tn After a long period of pain in the back of my knee and around towards the side of the knee I finally went to get it checked. I was told that my cartilage has worn and I now have arthritis as a result. I am in pain daily with it. Most of all I am so worried about my life, as I am a teacher. I am standing most of the day and I am now fearful that I will have to quit the one thing I love doing. I was so so so shocked to hear this news. I just thought I had torn a ligament or something.
Avatar f tn He may not have the enzymes to utilize the Glucosamine like he did before the gastric tube. Glucosamine Hcl is cheaper and it is harder for the body to utilize than the higher quality Glucosamine sulfate. With that being said, Glucosamine sulfate is commonly use in people who have GI problems because it helps to protect the mucus membranes and heal injuried tissue. It is a very important supplement in IBS, Chrones disease, ulcers etc., I feel really bad for you and your dad.
